Dear Savvy,
It's Summer, and I have an interview the first week of July. I plan on wearing a gray skirt-suit with a green top and black pumps. I'm not sure of the dress code, but it seams pretty laid-back from the phone call and how chatty she was. I never wear nylons — maybe tights in the Winter, but only if there is a foot of snow. Would it be a total faux pas to not wear them?
Savvy says: Hose or no hose, it's an age-old question that has a lot of ladies torn. To see my thoughts on the issue, read more.
You can't assume anything about the dress code from a chatty hiring manager. The simplest way to remedy your dilemma is to call your contact at the company, or even the receptionist, and ask for details on the dress code. Appropriate interview attire varies greatly between industries and companies, so take the guessing out of it with a simple phone call.
Most offices are more forgiving during the Summer months, but if you discover that you're entering a formally dressed workplace I'd throw on a pair of subtle hose for the sake of being conservative. If the office is casual you can forget about the nylons, and if it's business casual I wouldn't criticize you for skipping the hose because it's hot outside.
What do you think — is it a faux pas to interview without nylons?

yes it is.
1Better safe than sorry. Isn't it better to be a little hot during your interview than possibly risk not getting the job over something silly?
2I doubt I'd ever want to work somewhere that uptight. Nylons are ridiculously outdated.
3I'm 25 and I never wear hose to work. The only people I know who do are over 40. And I say good riddance! It's always better to wear hose to an interview though and get a sense of the company. If you get the job, you don't have to keep wearing them.
4It totally depends what sort of job, in what industry. Can make a blanket statement.
5I meant "can't"....
6I agree with others. It really depends.
7I would wear a pants suit instead of a skirt suit, that way you avoid the problem altogether. An interview is no time to take chances.
8i don't wear hose, but i would rather be safe than sorry. i would wear the hose!
9I've been to several interviews where I'm a bit overdressed, but I think it's probably better to be a little more put-together than underdressed. Just wear the hose for the interview and take them off as soon as it's over.
10Agree that hose are completely outdated. I didn't wear them to my interview at this job, but the dress code is pretty laid back here.
11Call the company. If it is summer, they might be more forgiving. I know we are here in the South.
A good rule of thumb. If the skirt/dress is below knee length, then you can probably get away with no hose. At the knee or slightly above (which could be a questionable skirt anyway), wear hose.
12Hose is outdated but some of the women in my office still wear them every time they wear a skirt. It's a fairly conservative office.
It's an interview. Suck up the heat for two hours and wear hose, or suck up the heat for two hours and wear a pants suit. No real good options for both beating the heat and dressing to impress in an interview.
Chances are, the office will be air conditioned anyway. It might only be bad outside.
13I agree with Alithyra - you're going for an interview so be on the safe side and wear a pair of hose. As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a first impression.
FTR, I don't think hose are outdated - I think they're practical and can be flattering.
14If in doubt - wear them. They are more 'formal' and more professional... I would NEVER interview in a skirt suit w out hose (then again, I'm an attorney, and I never go to court w out them)
15I would go with what you feel most confident in, when it comes down to it that makes a bigger impact. (unless you are interviewing for an HR position)
16I agree with runningesq. It's always safer to dress up than down.
17i wear hose everyday, i just feel more polished.
18I have these questions too! Similar summer debacles: are peep toes ok, is sleeveless shirt ok? I just don't know. On the one hand, you don't want to be too casual. On the other hand, you don't want to show up with sweat dripping down your face and stains under your blazer arms. The question is how to be cool AND collected at the same time? Uggh, maybe I will just wait until winter to interview, haha.
19I agree - better safe. I also think better a pants suit than a skirt.
Jade - I always wear sleeveless under my blazer in interviews. I'm not expected to remove my suit jacket while in the interview ever. It would be actually a faux pas to do so. So they don't need to know that I'm wearing a sleeveless top/shirt. Never had a problem.
20I like the hose. I don't really feel that much of anything is outdated these days. Then again, I do come from a culture where anything goes.
21I think tights are great- I couldn't live without them! And surely they're pretty fashionable and in vogue now since the Gossip Girl revolution.
I completely agree with #12- if the skirts above the knee then yes I'd wear them, but if it was mid calf then I think you don't need to wear them.
Skirt suits are much nicer than trouser suits also.
22Stoopeed, that's interesting --- I always think that a skirt suit is more formal/ conservative than pants. I would only interview in a black skirt suit, hose, black pumps, pearls ... but then again, law is a formal profession.
And I think you can wear a sleeveless blouse under your jacket -- I don't think you'd ever take off your jacket during an itnerview !
23I meant to say, I actually wear a tailored dress for an interview.
I suit it miles better. I also really look hideous in a jacket so don't wear one at all. So it's interesting you'd think you should never take it off
24i loathe and despise pantyhose and never ever wear them. But I agree, its about what makes you feel comfortable. If you FEEL confident, polished, and professional, then that's the image you'll project.
And i have to say, SavvySugar, LOL @ "subtle hoes"!!! Isn't that an oxymoron?
25I work at an ad agency and most people don't wear a full suit to interviews. While I wouldn't look down on someone who wore pantyhose, I wouldn't care if they didn't either.
26I guess it really depends on what your legs look like...
27Ugh, I hate them. But it really depends on the workplace. When in doubt, I'd say wear them.
28I would say always, always, always wear nylons. They're really not that annoying. And then, if the dress code doesn't call for them? That much more relieving!
29I work in a really casual place (even more casual than the official "business casual" dress code, ha), but I still made sure I was dressed very nicely for my interview--pencil skirt and yes, hose in June. Even though during some parts of the interview I was talking to people who were wearing jeans and t-shirts, I completely stand by my decision to dress the way I did.
Definitely better to overdo it than underdo it. I've never once heard of someone not getting hired because they over-dressed for the interview!
30but should you wear nude or black nylons? i never know! i figure black is better with a black suit, but in the summer i'm skeptical.
31thoughts?
I think you definitely should wear nice quality pantyhose for an interview. It shows class and professionalism and not being too overeager to be casual. What would you think if a guy showed up for an interview in a suit but with no socks? If later the dress code doesn't require pantyhose then fine, but to go without the pantyhose in the interview is a little tacky.
