The travel industry has become sadly deflated right along with the shrinking economy, but there's one market within the industry that has projected growth. According to a new (self-serving) survey by Destination Weddings & Honeymoons magazine, the destination wedding market will rake in $16 billion this year, up from $13 billion in 2008.
The magazine's editor says the average number of guests at destination weddings is about a third of the average traditional wedding, and fewer guests could make the destination event the cheaper of the two. Of course this isn't always the case, and often the guests' own expenses increase when they're attending a destination wedding.

we actually just HAD a destination wedding on 4/25 mostly because there were a few things that became so much easier doing it 'elsewhere'. my husband and i are from different religious backgrounds and by having it in the caribbean, we avoided that nonsense of families getting upset. we also were able to keep the number down cause i didn't want a big wedding and most people couldn't really afford to take the trip. the other good thing of a destination is that the resort did EVERYTHING for us - so i didn't have to stress about vendors or anything. that's definitely the biggest plus for it all!
1no. i have a huge family, and they wouldn't be able to travel that far. most are coming to our wedding from out of town, but the airfare from my hometown to where i am now is really inexpensive, so it's not prohibitive.
i like the idea of a destination wedding, but i can't force my family to shell out more because i need to save a few bucks. i'd rather cut corners elsewhere, and have it closer to home.
2a few months after my husband and I met we actually just wanted to go to the courthouse and then to Italy and come home with our surprise! But that didn't pan out when I peed on a stick, we choose to wait on the vows till after babe was born and then had a wedding in our town, but I still love the idea of secretly eloping and having a secret honeymoon as well.
3His family is from the midwest, and my family is from the east coast. We are doing a destination wedding just so we have a more balanced, smaller group of people coming.

8My husband and I had the traditional big wedding and I absolutely loved it but if I could do it all again, I would do a destination wedding with just our close friends and family.
9my boyfriends sister just found out she & her boyfriend are pregnant so we are bound for a beach wedding in 10 days! this is exactly what they wanted anyways but she couldn't be more excited! and it's perfect for them. && just like a lot of other girls i know who are having beach weddings then having a large reception for all their family & friends.
10Friends of mine and my boyfriend's had their wedding last year at a gorgeous castle converted into a hotel in Tuscany. While it was a gorgeous and over-the-top wedding and LOADS of fun, it was a bit of a financial burden to all of us, especially seeing as how expensive the rooms were. I have kind of always wanted to have a very very small ceremony in Ireland though, with only a few witnesses, so I guess in some ways I would like a destination wedding. No matter what, I couldn't see myself getting married in my hometown or here in London where I live now as that would be too boring.
11I would love to, but my dad is too disabled to fly anywhere. But, I live in a beach town, so I could pretend and just have a small beachside wedding!

13Wow, nice you have here. But for destination, you must choose carefully. If you are trying to list down all the possible best honeymoon destinations in the world, the beautiful paradise of Hawaii should not be forgotten. This country is blessed with everything that's brilliant you can think of. The calm weather is fantastic. The underwater activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling are not a disappointment and of course, the romantic aroma is all everywhere.
14I always said, if I ever get married, it would be on a beach. Big weddings aren't really my thing
