I had a 401(k) which I converted to a traditional IRA when I left my job and went back to school full-time. I've slowly been rolling it over to a Roth IRA.
we have a combination of the above. i don't really understand the way IRA's work, but i'm not convinced they are a good idea. my mom died in 2007, and in 2008 my dad's accountant told him to
cash out $6k in an IRA. his takes went up $4,200 that year. seems like IRA's are more of a money maker for the tax man.
i have a roth ira, which is allowing me to play a little with investing. i'm not eligible for a retirement fun through my employer for another 14 months.
