We got to know Jen Schefft back in 2003 when she became engaged to Andrew Firestone as winner of The Bachelor's third season. After they broke up and she appeared on The Bachelorette with another unsuccessful love story, Jen met her soon-to-be husband but was laid-off from her sales job a month after he proposed. Us Weekly got the scoop from the unemployed lady-in-love about how she's planning a low-cost wedding. Here are the highlights.
- The details: Instead of renting chairs and linens and ordering a cake from an outside source, they're "going with everything that comes with the venue [an Italian restaurant]," saved money by booking a DJ instead of a band, and isn't worrying about matching ribbons on the programs and invitations. She said, "Even saving $200 is saving $200."

- The head-count: They're keeping the guest list to close friends and family and will end up with about 100 guests.
- Saving on attire: Jen said, "You can save a lot on shoes — no one really even sees them . . . The bracelet I'll buy, but it won't be, you know, real pearls." She's also mindful of how much she's spending on the dress and explained, "I'm not going to wear a $20,000, or even a $10,000 dress. I just don't think it's worth it for one day."
- Hair and makeup: She's doing her own makeup, and as for hair, she's having the girl who normally cuts her hair style it for the wedding day.

Rick Owens
Shu Uemura
Marc Jacobs
this is very sweet, although i'm sure her dress is still 8K and the girl who "usually styles her hair" is her stylist who she sees at least once a week for how many hundreds a pop
anyway, i think this does send a nice message, though, and i agree, you sometimes have to just look past stuff like "matching ribbons" because no one else will notice and even if they do, who will honestly care? if my old auntie bad mouths me, i don't really give a crap
PSS: also agree shoes aren't super important but there's a chance my first pair of christian louboutins or manolos or jimmy choos will be under my wedding dress!
1Hahaha...yes, I'm sure the dress sneaks in at just under $9K or so.
Doing your own makeup is a money-saver, but not necessarily the wisest one. I bought a $50 gift certificate at the MAC store and got my makeup done by a pro for "free". I shop there anyway and could spend the $50 whenever I please. But who knows, maybe she is a great makeup artist. I am not.
2I love her but, ""I'm not going to wear a $20,000, or even a $10,000 dress."
Seriously? Even a $1,000 dress seems extravagant to me.
3"Seriously? Even a $1,000 dress seems extravagant to me."
Exactly.
4haha I can't wait to hear more about what translates as "low cost" for her.
I could probably get a whole wedding for $20K, not just a dress!!
5Ha, yeah, no kidding...celebrity "budget" ideas are always entertaining to me. It's like "Oh, I'm only going to spend $500,000 on my wedding instead of $1,000,000, aren't I frugal??" Please. I'm sure her dress will probably be in the $4-5 grand range, which is ridiculous. I got a great dress for $400 on sale at David's and it was really pretty. We saved a lot of money on our wedding by keeping the guest count low, not having an open bar, making our own favors, etc. I actually did my own makeup that day, but I had this great vanity mirror with excellent lighting so I could do a really good job on it. I also got a good deal on my cake by having a family friend who owns a bakery do it. You can save a lot of money on your cake if you get one with buttercream icing instead of fondant; plus the buttercream cakes usually taste a lot better anyway.
6I remember thinking my dress was pricey for 950.
7I thought my actual wedding dress was expensive at $450, when the original was $15 on eBay (it never worked out for me, boo hoo!).
8I think they were nice tips. And if she is doing her makeup herself, I kind of doubt that she will be spending 5 grand on a dress.
9Pork I'm with you. It's a dress for ONE day even if it is THE day spending 1k is insane.
10that is the funniest thing i have ever heard, maybe at her next wedding she can spend 20k on a wedding dress because it sure as hell isn't going to last.

11I will have a glorious wedding for less than $500 bucks. I just have to meet the guy!
12I want a very natural wedding where the most expensive thing will be the food for a very small guest list.
I had a FABULOUS wedding dress for $450! Went to Macy's to look at head pieces, saw this gorgeous dress, the consultants tried to talk me out of trying it on (saw my rock and figured I could afford something expensive) - but I didn't give a damn!!! And the shoes... I bought a pair that I could wear with jeans and less formal dresses. And they were great. With the money we didn't spend on "the dress", we flew our families to Italy for a week!
