Famous or not, most women own at least one dress that hangs uselessly in our closets. Take a note from Taylor Swift and turn the seemingly good-for-nothing dress into a good act; the 19-year old singer donated her long cream and gold Jessica McClintock gown to DonateMyDress.org. I certainly don't have any prom dresses in my possession any longer, but I have a selection of worn-once bridesmaids dresses that could use a better home. You, too? Take the opportunity to do some charitable Spring cleaning.
DonateMyDress organizes donation drives across the country to collect dresses for girls who can't afford to buy something for their high school proms. Thinking back to those big June dances, I appreciate how fortunate I was to have a family that could afford extras like a prom dress. Not everyone is so lucky, so take a second to locate donation drives in your area and round up your best condition dresses that you're never going to wear again. Remember, hold onto any receipt you get for making the donation for next year's taxes and consider taking a picture.

LOL, if I had gone to my high school prom, I'd definitely have donated my dress to an organization like this. What a great idea. I mean, my parents did have enough money to buy us prom dresses and they bought both my wedding dress and my sister's, but I know there are a lot of other families out there that really don't have that kind of money. It's awesome that girls from those families will be able to have a nice dress to wear to their proms/formal dances too.
1i should do this. between my sister and i, we have eight prom dresses chilling in my parent's basement!
2I did this with a couple of bridesmaid dresses. I donated the matching purses and shoes too. It was nice to know they'd be used again.
3There are several organizations that organize dress drives nationally - Two I know of are: Princess Project and Cinderella Affair. It's deductible list the value of a formal dress in good condition at $18.
4My mom loans me and my sister's old homecoming/ prom dresses to her students.
5My prom and sorority Formal dresses are long gone to these charities. (Except for my senior formal dress. I was so in love with that thing that I'm holding onto it, hoping that there'll be another opportunity...)
6Aw, this just makes me like Taylor Swift even more.
I recently did something like this for an organization I'm joining. It's called Becca's Closet: http://www.beccascloset.org/.
7The sad thing is that I've been trying to donate my old evening gown, but my mom is fighting back about how she wants to hold onto it because it cost so much money. It doesn't fit me or my little sister, so I find it pointless that it's taking up space in my already stuffed closet [my room is the official storage bin of the house]. I would really love to be able to make a girl's day by donating a gorgeous Jessica McClintock to someone in need.
8I've given away many prom and bridesmaid dresses.
