I'm in love with Trader Joe's. There. I said it. With the exception of the tendency for some items to randomly vanish from inventory forever, TJ's (affectionate nickname) is the most convenient place for me to score deals on typically more expensive items like cheese. While I could go on about the store's accolades, I'm not completely loyal to the chain because it does have some limitations.
Consumer Reports rates the best and worst supermarkets in its May issue, and TJ's earned second place on a list of 60 stores. Wegman's and Publix round out the top three, but TJ's scored higher than both of these stores on the price factor. Where do you grocery shop to find the best deals?

I just shop at the closest place. There's only one other major grocery store and it's about 15 minutes out of the way. No sale will make up that difference to me.

I shop wherever deals are. That varies week to week, store to store. Generally, WalMart has the lowest price - but sometimes I can't find what I need [the one by my house sucks, I have to drive 20 min to the good one!]. I'll go to Target to see if it's there if I can't find it at Wal-Mart, or Kroger, because they double and triple coupons regardless of sale.
3I like TJ also - their quality is good and is not expensive like Whole Food. However, I mainly shop at oriental grocery store for all meat/fish/vegetable - they are normally cheaper. As for Cereal/Bread/chips/crackers ... I go to Savemart.
4I do most of my shopping at Fred Meyer's just for convenience sake (however, I do look for deals in their weekly ad). If I was trying to get the cheapest prices...I'd probably go to WinCo or Food4Less.
5I just got that issue and was pleased to see that Aldi ranked highly. You won't get any fancy service but wow is it cheap! And you can find specialty items there, too, if you're lucky.
6I like Trader Joe's, as well, but I typically shop at Harris Teeter. I go online during the day and make a list of all of the sale items I want. (You can go on their website and click on the items from their circular and it gives you a printable list so you can be sure to know the exact item.) I rarely grocery shop, so I spend a ton of money when I do, but last time I saved $88.00! (And spent $245.)
7I do miss the local grocery store in my parents' hometown, though. They have OK prices, but what I really miss is all of their deli items. They have the most amazing potato and macaroni salads, chex mix, etc. I make my Mom take me there when I'm visiting!
8My two favorite places to get food are Nugget Market and Costco! The closest Trader Joe's is the opposite direction from where I work, so I don't go there. Our town has been lobbying for a TJs for a LONG time. We don't quite meet the number of residents required, but I am fairly sure that in my town the percentage of people who would go there meets their requirements.

10Sunflower Farmer's Market in Denver, CO beats the pants off TJ's. Sunflower always has amazing deals on fresh and yummy foods. If Whole Foods went under I would not shed a tear. Also, I have gotten great deals at the Asian food markets in Denver. I'm searching for other ethnic grocery stores in my area so as to expand my culinary repertoire.
11Wal-Mart and Kroger are my only choices. So Wal-Mart 95% of the time for better prices. Kroger when I want certain things.
12Meijers! But I think they're only an MI/OH/IN chain. I can't stand Farmer Jack and Kroger for some reason. Target can sometimes have good deals on their pantry things too. Unforch there's not a Trader Joe's around me to test out.
13Hands down, I LOVE Aldi. They are super-cheap and you can find about 70% of your weekly groceries there. They don't carry many specialty items, so for those I go to Super Walmart or Pick and Save. Also, you have to bag your own groceries and bring your own bags, but the prices are about half of what you pay at a regular grocery store.
14I love Publix. How they've designed their generic items looks better than the brand names and they're mostly just as good!
15Wow, I've never heard of several of these grocery chains. Here in New England, Stop & Shop and Shaw's are the big chains, but I've found that Hannaford has some of the lowest prices around.
16Aldi's and wherever I can get a good deal with coupons! (I'm all about the coupons!)
17I shop at Publix...not because of prices but because it is clean and has everything that I need. Their meats and produce always look appealing and that is important to me. I will go to Whole Foods every once in a while, but could never do a full shopping there b/c they don't carry the brands that I like typically.
18TJs. i can get everything i need there. if its not there then i go to target. if its not there then i probably dont need it
19Aldi's! I cut my food spending by half. I wish I had a Trader Joe's by me. (I think they're actually owned by Aldi's )
