Stripping down for cash has been a known solution for college students paying their way through school, and the poor job market has caused more college-educated women than ever to seek employment in adult clubs. Industry employers report a noticeable increase in applications from women who were laid off from their white collar jobs as a result of the recession.
Jonathan Alpert, a New York City-based psychotherapist with clients who worked in adult entertainment explains, "Desperate measures are becoming far more acceptable." Whether or not these types of jobs were ever unacceptable depends on who you're talking to, but what do you make of Alpert's comment? Are gigs like stripping or posing nude any more or less socially acceptable than they may have been in the past?

i don't think that they will be more acceptable - just more common-place. i feel like just because there are more women out there trying to get jobs doing it doesn't mean that there are more people willing to talk openly about it.
1i'm not sure if it's more acceptable in society overall but definitely within small groups - like other girls my age probably would applaude me much more than before...but grannies and conservative types wouldn't be more accepting of it
2ski gurl...unless you had one awesome granny! lol
Hey, there are a lot of strippers making way more money than me working way less hours.
3Its going to become more commonplace because places like this (plus dungeons,escorts...ect) will always be in demand.
I don't know about acceptable..."understandable" I think is a better word to describe it.
4As a college educated woman who works in restaurants because they pay more than a job utilizing my education would - I don't know if they're more acceptable (I can't tell you how many times a week people ask my why I'm not using my degree - because if I make $2/hour in tips I'm making more than I would utilizing my degree, guys!) but I can totally understand the need to bring home money. I'm unemployed at the moment, and it's driving me crazy! I'm not quite desperate (or slender, I think the cutoff is size 4) enough to strip, but I can understand people who are.
5I think there are certainly people who would not be fine with it, but under the circumstances they say "in this economy..." and continue with their lives nowadays.
I think for the most part though, people who were fine with it before are still fine with it, and people who weren't still aren't. It's just that there are more women needing money lately, and a percentage of that group is willing to take their clothes off.
I had a friend that stripped, and she worked two or three nights a week, and had enough money to pay rent, all her bills and go out every other night of the week. She didn't even work at a very good strip joint, either. I say if you're okay with taking your clothes off for money, you may as well, it pays great.
6I don't think it's more socially acceptable, but I do think that a lot more people are going to turn to it for income. There are usually few hours and the job is not exactly rocket science and the pay is decent. A lot of people are going to look at it as being an easy buck. I'm sure a lot of people are also going into bartending...lots of bars are reporting an increase in business during the recession and bartenders can make decent money on a good weekend.
7I guess it depends on the view of the person, I personally never looked down on strippers. I went to school with many girls who strip to pay college expenses. My thinking is if they are doing it for the right reason (school, bills, etc). then good for them. and if they just enjoy dancing nude (and some girls do), then good for them. I think people are to quick to look down on someone for stripping, but just as quick to jump on the band wagon when it benefits them. I support strippers, and If I was small enough, it would be my second job.
8I wouldn't have done it before, and I don't think I would do it now, but I'm a single adult -- if I lose my job, I have options (like moving in with my parents, my brother, a friend, etc.). It's not like I have to support children or anything. I can definitely understand doing whatever you can in that situation.
9I still feel the same, to each their own but I would never do it.
