Smokers are left fuming after federal tobacco taxes made their biggest-ever increase yesterday, raising the federal cigarette tax from $0.39 a pack to $1.01. On top of the state taxes also charged on cigarette purchases, the total taxes paid on one pack are striking, and health officials hope the accelerated cost will help smokers cut back. Can you guess how much different states tack on to a pack of cigarettes? Take the quiz!

2/3 I second guessed myself on #2. Oh well.
11/3 but the again I don't smoke so I don't pay attention to how much they are.
2wow, when did NY up it? NJ had the highest for a long time.
3I had a couple I was seating where I work, ask for smoking, I told them the city has a smoking ban. After I sat them they told me "that with all these new taxes on Cigarettes they should get special treatment." I had to walk away
4$10.50 a pack. WOW!
5That is a bucket load of money for getting a smoke on. If the trend remains, it'll be cheaper to smoke marijuana.
62/3... glad I quit!
7Glad I don't smoke!
8I think our cig tax is going to increase soon here in Wisconsin, which is probably good for the state. There are so many smokers around here that will definitely still shell out for their smokes, no matter how much they cost.
Our liquor tax is supposed to go up too...not sure how much, but I'm sure pretty much everyone in the entire state will be fairly upset about it.
9That is a pretty big tax increase, percentage wise.
Good thing cigarettes are addictive, otherwise the states and federal gov't wouldn't bring in so much $!
10I agree -- that's big tax hike. Geez, I'm glad I don't smoke.
11Smoking is so gross.
121/3, but I'm glad that I am not too informed on cigarettes!
13Why can states, county and cities collect taxes from smokes and then ban them? Is there no good lawyer out there that can task this in court?
