Getting laid off and going through the process of filing for unemployment and looking for a new job is never a walk in the park, and the experience often becomes more painful as time ticks on and you remain jobless. That being said, there are millions of reasons some people remain unemployed for lengthy amounts of time. Sometimes we take time off to go back to school or get additional certifications, have children or raise a family, or simply take a breather between jobs or careers for reflection and goal setting while a partner carries us financially or we live off savings.
What is the longest you've ever been unemployed, whether planned or unplanned?

The longest for me was 13 months. It was a horrible time in my life.
1In the past two years, I was unemployed twice: once for 6 weeks, once for a month.
22.5 years
38 months last year. bad times.
417 months and counting
5Kind of hard to figure out, as being freelance is code for unemployed. Probably a few months, then work, then a few months.
6I think the longest was approx 4 months. This was about 7 years ago and I remember that I goofed off for 3 months and then got serious about finding a job.
7I'm only 23, but I haven't been unemployed for a period over 2 weeks as yet (beginning age 16).
89 months about 17 years ago and not more than 3 months since then...
96 months just last year. I did odd jobs and temp work during that time, but nothing steady or fulfilling. I moved to Seattle and got a job here before the recession hit and have managed to hang onto it. The current economy is definitely scary.
10Currently, I've been unemployed since May of last year, so yeah. Here's hoping I find something soon!
118 months, from June of 07 to February of 08. I was looking for employment the entire time and had a bunch of interviews, but it was just a REALLY slow time in the job-hunting world for me.
12A little more than 3 months between my last internship after grad school and when I started temping, which led to my current full-time job.
133 months
14my longest was 7 months (july 08) and I am still not back to full time but was fortunate enough find a part time to at least keep me afloat.
15I've been unemployed for 10 months now. 8 months of that i was caring for my grandma though and then decided to give myself a break for a month or two after she passed away, i've really only started looking for work this week.
16there was a point where i was working only my pt. time job (the one for fun) and that was it. that lasted about a year. i was doing temp work and anything else i could get. i'm not sure how i paid the bills, because my family would NOT help. their position was "come home, it's free here". yeah, no thanks
17probably about 4 months - my husband though has been out of work since November if not earlier and it's just getting to be PAINFUL for me
1823 months so far last job i was at for 13 years.
19Been unemployed technically for 10 months though I do some odd jobs on the side. I have a BA and masters in economics no good jobs in this economy better luck in the coming months.
20I've been unemployed since November of 08 (Its now July 2009). These past nine months have been absolutely horrible. The economy and job market for Landscape Architects in the DC Metro area and US overall, is just horrible. I have looked and looked, gone on interviews (not many though), and nothing pans out.
The building/ construction industry has come to a complete halt. Private sector work has completely dried up and only the federal government and healthcare industries are still building. The rest are broke or bankrupt.
I realize the dire straits of private industry and have been applying for Federal positions for over 4 monthes now. Problem is, it takes forever to get hired into the Feds and contrary to popular belief its not really a fair and balanced process. Believe it or not nepitism is rampant in the Government. Its who you know that gets you in, just like private industry.
Anyhow, in the meantime I'm trying to temp, eventhough thats slowed in DC as well. Its getting to the point that if I can't find a permanent position by this fall I'm gonna have to break up with my girlfriend of 3 years and move back home with Mom & Dad in Cincinnati, Ohio. Yikes
21I graduated with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and minor in Finance in May of 2008. I had a part-time job during school and did that full-time after graduation to make some money while I was applying for engineering jobs. Well, March '09 comes rolling around and my girlfriend gets a promotion to go work on Capitol Hill in DC. I have always wanted to move back to the east coast (I grew up in VA) so I moved to DC with her and figured that my chances of getting a good career started in DC were better than where I currently was. It's now July '09 and I've only had two face-to-face interviews and one phone interview and I did not get hired for any of those. I have applied for every job that I am even remotely qualified for all over the country and hundreds within the DC Metro area and even spanning out 50 or 60 miles past that as I would not mind driving far to get to a good job. I have been unemployed since March of '09 and have been looking for an entry level job within my major since graduation. This is a lot more difficult than I had imagined and I feel it is a lot more difficult than it is supposed to be. I just pray something comes along soon before employers no longer wish to hire an entry level person who graduated a year and a half ago when they can hire an entry level person who graduated within the last few months.
2210 years, 6 of those never leaving the house, no injuries etc.
238 months and counting
