I am online in some capacity most hours of the day, evening and night. When I'm not at the computer, I have my BlackBerry by my side so I can keep on top of my email and what's going on in the world. While it's easiest for me to stay connected and on top of communication, I do set limits and try to make time to decompress, detach, and rest my eyes. Unplugging is one of the ways I maintain a healthy work-life balance.
That being said, I know most people don't thrive off staying as "clocked in" as I am. Technology is amazing in that it allows us to stay supremely connected, but it also ensures most of us work on weekends and rack up more than 40 hours of work during the week. Do you check your work email when you're not at the office via your phone or home computer, or do you choose to let the inbox fill up until you sit down at your desk in the morning?

I've got a Blackberry which I love. It allows me to be aware of what's going on after hours or on the weekend - and weed out junk mail I can trash at any time - but I rarely respond to emails when out of the office. I wait until Monday or the next morning but it is good to be aware if something urgent does come up. And when I'm off-site overseeing a meeting or event it is handy to be looped in to what's happening at the office in real-time.
1Nope. I don't have a blackberry and I rarely check my email at home. If there is something big going on, I might check it, but usually I figure if something so urgent is happening that they need to drag their employees out from their beds/couches then they can call my cell.
I catch my husband checking his randomly, and I tell him to put his laptop away. We're home, it's the only time we have during the week to spend with each other, why would we waste it "checking in" on work. He agrees with that, but I think he's just so accustomed to clicking on his email all day that it doesn't even cross his mind to stop after 5 p.m.
2I don't get my work email on my BlackBerry. I used to, but I became all consumed and had to get it removed. I will check it on my laptop every now and then. I need to stop doing that now.
I checked it on vacation once and my boss sent me an email practically yelling at me (in a nice way) to get off the email and enjoy my vacation and if she caught me on email again then she wouldn't approve anymore vacation time for me.
3I do check my email at home, especially when I take time off. It's probably because I don't like coming back to the office with a full inbox. That always stresses me out.
4I do, but I try to limit it because I'd prefer not to have my job take over my entire life.
5Sometimes...
6It all comes to my phone, personal and work email. I don't get many work emails on the weekend or evenings anyways, though, so it doesn't matter.
7I do occasionally check my e-mail at my computer at home. Sometimes I like to stay up-to-date with what's going on and not be surprised and/or overwhelmed when I get to work.
8sometimes - i do when work is going well in order to weed out the junk and keep on top of my emails which minimizes stress in the office BUT if i'm particularly stressed about work or dreading a particular task or week (ie: this week) then i don't because i don't want it to ruin my downtime, make me stressed, make it so i don't get the rest and relaxation i need, and so i end up taking time away from the important people in my life
9Yes.
10I never get a work email dire enough for me to need to read it at home, so no, I do not check my work email at home. If there is a true emergency, someone will call me on my cell and get in touch with me that way.
11I do sometimes, but only if I happen to be on the computer anyway - I rarely make a point to check work e-mail on the weekends. We don't have last-minute emergencies, so it's usually just a matter of weeding out the junk messages or seeing if so-and-so has written me back..
I do, however, check e-mail on my days off - not on real vacations, but if I take a vacation day just to sleep in and stuff like that, I'll check in two or three times during the day. Luckily no one has taken advantage of that yet - or I'm not that important!
12i do check my email from time to time when i'm not at work - i'm one of those that will check my BB when i'm on vacation laying at the pool or check it at 11pm just in case something comes through.
13Yes, always. My bb is an appendage. I sleep with it under my pillow. I realize it's kind of a problem!
14I'm in grad school, so my regular e-mail is also my 'work' e-mail. It bothers me sometimes that I don't get a break from school and class related e-mails, especially when someone e-mails me in the middle of the night, then sends another e-mail 30 minutes later asking why I haven't responded!
Once I graduate and (hopefully) get a job, I don't plan to check my work e-mail once I head out. In my line of work, nothing is that urgent!
15I'll maybe check my e-mail once or twice, if at all, on weekends. When I'm on vacation and I have internet access, I'll check it every other day or so. Best to keep work and home separate!
16i work from home, so its hard not to. i'm kind of always on call
17Only if I'm working on a time-sensitive deal with an overseas client.
18Only if it's something I'm eagerly awaiting a response to - it's not even like I can really do much from home if it requires I access our network drives, but sometimes if I've left the office with something hanging, I can't stand the suspense! My boyfriend, on the other hand, checks his quite a lot - he's always checking his Blackberry and laptop for work related emails as he leaves the office just as the US office wakes up ... that must be no fun.
19I used to at my old job but I don't get paid enough here so no way!
20I occasionally check emails from our web mail client. It's not expected, but I got so used to doing so in my former job with a home office, it just became habit.
21Nope. I only worry about work when I am there, and I plan to keep it that way. I don't even want a laptop. Been there, done that, no interest in doing it again.
22i respond to email on my blackberry at all hours of the day or night. I get sick if it is turned off, or if I can't find it.
23I read them on my BB but rarely reply til Monday morning unless it's something really urgent.
