Severing ties with a bank can feel a lot like breaking up with a guy. The bank will probably ask for a reason ("It's not me! It's you!") and you have to let all the major institutions in your life know about it otherwise your automatic bill pay goes array. Not to mention the stress, mixed emotions, and fear that there's no one perfect bank out there. Luckily, there are ways to gracefully bow out of the relationship with your current bank should you decide you're fed up with its lack of attention to your needs, crappy website, or unexplainable fees and policies.
All that being said, most of us settle into a healthy banking relationship and get pretty comfortable. How many years have you been committed to your current bank and do you think you are in it for the long haul?

1My mom helped me open an account when I was 15. Almost 9 years later and I will never switch. I really have no complaints at all, I love my bank!!
2About 11 years.
3Do people really have this much angst over who they bank with? I have been with a lot of banks, even more than one at once. The longest was my last "relationship" with Bank of America, who I was probably with for 12 yrs or so. But I switched because of their fee structure and was wooed away by a bank that would reimburse all atm charges, and had interest checking.
4Since birth, actually. *lol* My parents got me a savings bank book the day I was born, and I got my first actual bank account when I was 13 - these pocket money acounts.
5I never really thought about switching, because I was always satisfied with the service and the fees. I did do comparisions, and haven't found a bank yet that would suit me better.
Gee, it's my longest relationship.
since the first time i got an account...don't remember when exactly but probably middle school....probably 10-15 years
6A little more than 5 years. It's actually the credit union at my workplace, which I joined shortly after I started working here.
7two years now, since that's how long i've lived in this state. I really don't like it though and wish that there was a decent Credit Union around. I just hate banks in general. I'll probably switch when they finish putting an HSBC in by my work. The only reason why I have the one that I have now is because there's atm's all over the place around here.
8I've switched once because of the locations, that's back in the day when internet banking was looked at as a novelty and a huge risk.
910 years. My dad worked there and I know all the managers, so no fees!
It's a small
bank that's done really well. I even own some of their stock.
10From age 15 to the end of last year. I switched because I got a job at Bank of America. After I switched I found out that you can do instant deposits of cash and checks right at the ATM. That would be enough for me even if I didn't work there!
11cokerad, what do you mean by "instant deposits"? do you just mean that you can deposit cash and checks at the atm? or that with Bank of America, your atm deposits will go through your account instantly?
.....of course, you'd want instant deposits with BoA since they like to process your highest checks first regardless of date
12i've been with my back since i was really little. (ok, i was with another bank that was bought by BoA, but still it's the same bank to me)
13I've been with WaMu for about 7 years I guess. I started with BoA when I moved to California but they were nickle and diming me on every little thing! I much prefer WaMu and hope they won't change much (as they keep assuring us) now that they are becoming Chase.
14I just broke up with my bank of 9 years. There are just not enough branches near me for the relationship to work out.
15I've been with BofA since 1999. I also have accounts with Chase and Citi. With all the financial consolidation, there's like 4 banks left.
16I've been with the same credit union for 25 years, they just sent me an anniversary card.
17I've been with Associated Bank for 10 years now...I opened my account back when I started college because it was very convenient and had branches all over the state. All I've done with it was to change my last name on the account when I got married and change my address on my debit card when we moved.
18I've been using the same credit union as my primary bank/CU for 11 years.
19I think I've probably had my account since 1985 (longer than some of you have been alive!)
20About 9 years, we went with USAA shortly after my husband joined the Air Force, I'll stay with them forever.
21I've been w/ the same credit union for about 15 years. My mom co-signed my first car loan w/ me at this particular CU and I've maintained at least a savings account there the whole time. Now, I have two saving accounts, one checking account, one car loan, one 2nd mortgage and a debit card.
22since 11th grade.. so thats about 7years?
23I've been with my back since I was in high school. I had a local bank account for checking and savings, but when I moved to a different state for graduate school I moved everything over to my main bank. I've got everything with them- insurance, banking, investments, credit card. I couldn't be happier! I love USAA!
24I've had the same account for about 15 years, but its on its third or fourth bank.
25I've been with my bank for 11 years. I have had to open other accounts with other banks (for a while, my bank wasn't in the city I was living in for college), but I've kept an account with my bank. I've started looking into other banks, however.
26Res: erinflower, USAA here also since 1969 when I became eligible.
27TidalWave, Do you know what HSBC stands for. I have HSBC checking(local acct) since it became HSBC (bought out Marine Midland) Everyone said it's just letters. Just found on Internet that it's Hong Kong Shanghai Bank of China. Are you still going to wait?
I opened my checking and savings account in 1989 so what that almost 20 years.
Some years both accounts are empty, some years full some years overdrawn...c'est la vie.
28I opened my checking account when I was 11, so 25 years.
29since I was 16 so going on 13 years...
30Since 1997.
31since i was five or six, around 20 years. but i have a credit card with another bank and a savings account with yet another bank. my bank doesn't offer the best deals on some products but i like their service enough to stick with them for my everyday chequing acct and mortgage.
325 years, love b of a.
33USAA ftw! I switched from bank to bank for a while because of ridiculous fees and USAA is the best bank ever! I stick with them forever!
34since i was born! my baby account was with TD, then when i was about 8 my mom started working at Canada Trust, and I got an account there. Then they merged a few years ago! so.... yeah!
35For the longest time I used to stash all my cash in my sock drawer. It wasn't until the end of High School that I finally decided to get a bank account. Silly me.
363 years for my current bank but I've had past accounts for 4+ years at one bank.
376-7 yrs now. I love them.
