Northwest Airlines has been dealing with some disgruntled customers after it announced it would switch from passing free pretzel packs to peanuts. The commotion didn't come from passionate pretzel-lovers or over-zealous peanut-haters, it came from people allergic to the controversial nuts, but it got me thinking about what would be a good substitute for the typical airplane snack.
Pretzels wouldn't be a bad alternative, but it doesn't solve the overwhelming thirst issue that results from salty snacks. You're a paying customer, so if you had your say, what should airlines pass instead of peanuts? Or is nothing better than peanuts, in your opinion?

An apple or a banana!
1I don't care if they pass out free snacks, I can always bring my own. Just let the water and soft drinks be free and I'm happy.
2well when i fly on Delta - they have cheese crackers which aren't too bad and i think that pretzels are ok. i actually really like it when i get the apple on Delta as well. we fly that for business a lot and it's one of the things that i look forward to on my flight.
3I actually like the pretzels way more than peanuts (flavor wise). I can understand how some people who are deathly allergic to peanuts would be upset.
4Pretzels!
5I hate peanuts, but I'm not allergic.
What about trail mix sans nuts? Carrots or celery with some ranch or peanut butter [or even hummus! wait that's asking way too much].
Personally, I'm most happy when I get on a flight that serves meals [shoutout to Continental!]. There's enough variety to pick and choose things to eat.
Just as long as they give free drinks, I'll be okay though
6I usually bring my own snacks (I don't eat nuts of any kind). But pretzels are a good alternative too. But as long as the sodas and water are free, I'm happy.
7didn't airlines switch to giving out pretzels and trail mix for the precise reason that people are deathly allergic to peanuts? now i'm confused.
even though i'm not allergic to peanuts (and actually really like them), i think its irresponsible if they are serving peanuts. i've worked with a lot of kids with severe peaunut allergies, and for many of them they don't even have to eat it to have a reaction- just being in the same room as peanuts will send them into anaphylactic shock. not something you want happening on an airplane...

Me too, Nora! I'm very allergic to peanuts and this really shocks me!
I would prefer a piece of fresh fruit or veggies. Obviously that can get very pricey so if that's not an option, maybe some whole grain crackers?
9granola bars or crackers - they're shelf stable and easy to store. Fruit would be a challenge for airlines, plus it's messier with apple cores or banana & orange peels.
10i say granola bars or an apple.
no trail mix please, hate raisins!
11Granola bars or crackers would work for me. I would love it if they served Chex Mix, too. Yum!
12They should pass me all the extra peanuts. I hate pretzels!
13Amen, kimpossible. Just bring back the free water and drinks. That's all I care about!
14personally, i don't care. but i would be happy if the served a meal..but with all these ideas and suggestions for airlines remember that the price of the ticket will more than likely go up!! i say bring your own snacks, what every you like if you know you don't like the peanuts!!
15i don't really care, i'd rather have the free pop and water over anything else, but if i had to pick i'd say granola bars, cheese and cracker packets, or fruit of some sort. when i flew to florida years ago (i think in spirit) they gave us packs of cookies that i hadn't had since grade school lol, totally made the flight for me.
16I'll take a Zone bar.
17Goldfish. Kids go ape-nuts for Goldfish. You know you're riding in a car with loving parents when there are Goldfish crumbs all over the back seat.
18Southwest used to have honey roasted peanuts but now they have plain peanuts and cheese crackers and I don't like either. I wish they'd go back the honey roasted, yum! Now I just bring my own snack. Crackers or trail mix (without nuts) would be good, although they are still salty.
I'm pretty sure they don't do fruits or veggies because those are things that go bad and/or require refridgeration. They'd waste a lot of time and money restocking and getting rid of wasted food. Stuff they serve now tends to last a long time. Plus, things like apples or carrots could be harder to eat for kids & elderly.
19Fresh fruit, fruit cups or granola bars. I like Jetblue's snacks. I usually make sure I bring my own snacks on the plane.
20Ooo, Dienliv!! I hadn't thought about Goldfish crackers! I would love those! I think I may go out a buy a bag of it now!
21I always bring my own snacks, so I'd be fine with just the beverages. But it would be nice if they had granola bars, dried fruit, Chex mix, Gardetto's...stuff like that.
22i love the stuff served on jetblue flights...the blue teracotta chips, munchies mix or animal crackers.
23I agree with everything you listed pharm_chick:) I also love trail mix, so wouldnt mine seeing little bags of that. Ooh or teddy grahams!
24I loved those Asian sesame and rice crackers that Air Canada had for a while.
25cant they do both? people who are allergic to peanuts dont have to eat it....and people are gonna bring nuts on the plane even if they dont want the stupid pretzels.
26I almost killed my friend's daughter once when I met them in Jamaica. I was hypoglycemic, so I couldn't wait until after she went to sleep to eat dinner. I cracked open my peanuts, and I asked her if she wanted one, and she said she was allergic to them. Then everybody started freaking out, and I felt terrible. Luckily, she was fine with a little bit of benadryl. It's a serious public health problem. I vote for fruit or pretzels.
27I'm allergic to peanuts (even being around someone who is eating them will cause a reaction). I flew to Australia and back a week ago, and I couldn't eat the majority of the snacks on the 15-hour flight because they had peanuts in them. Very disappointing, as there is no way I could get anything else to eat during such a long flight!
I like the idea of apples. They contain a lot of water, are good for your teeth, and are yummy. The airline I flew with to Australia claimed it had "fresh, in-season fruit" available, and it turned out to be limp, sour honeydew that didn't look or taste edible.
28When I have flown they offer me a nutri gran bar or cheese its. I have also gotten pretzels and peanuts.
29However I do remember the days when you got served lunch or dinner meals- now they charge you too much for a sandwich or salad. It's only a matter of time before they start charging for a soda and snacks.
Air popped Popcorn. Who's allergic to popcorn? Is it possible?
Fruits would be a tough one. I'm allergic to fruits unless they are organic and pesticide-free. Otherwise my mouth area, inside and out, get swollen and I get a sore throat from it.
