The numbers are finally in from 2008, and among all of the big-named bankruptcies that occurred last year there were some financial knights. Strength in numbers wasn't easy to come by during a year that beat up most everyone, but Fortune managed to find ten that came out on top of the business world in 2008.
- Exxon Mobil
- Graybar Electric
- Berkshire Hathaway
- Intel
- Altria Group
- Nestlé
- Occidental Petroleum
- Microsoft
- Sysco
- Walt Disney

Why am I not surprised to see Exxon at the top of this list?
1Interesting list. I am actually surprised that some companies were not in the top 10.
2I need to go work one of these places. Ha.
3i think that it's interesting that Exxon is on the top of the list, especially given that they are changing their business model. they are moving away from the gas station side of things i think and going towards the selling to corporations thing.
4oh i love disneyland. Everytime we go we wonder how much that place rakes in on any given day. it's insane.
5I'm not surprised to see Walt Disney on there.
6Good job for these companies though.
They are financially sound, but there's not job security in these names.
Exxon has been cutting exploration because the price of selling the product (oil) isn't worth the investments in searching for it ($700,000 a day just for the equipment). Refining has been significantly slowed for "maintenance" (gasoline too cheap to run refineries at capacity).
Remember is the early 2000s, the oil companies actually were losing money because oil was so cheap. They may be in a similar situation now.
Berkshire is flirting with a succession plan and PR management on why the best investor in history is losing so much mula.
Intel keeps firing employees whenever their stock price goes down.
Microsoft has the cash on hand, but the growth opportunities are slim. Recently handed out a couple thousand pink slips. Dell also is financially sound, but who really wants anything to do with that company.
Until all the smokers get cancer and die, Altria will rock on.
7i guess getting my bachelors in chemical engineering was a great idea... exxon mobile, graybar electric, nestle AND occidental petroleum!
