New York City is notorious for being the most expensive place to live in the US. Just visiting the city makes it clear that most things cost more, but it doesn't offer a real indication of how much residents spend to live in the Big Apple. How much do you know about New York living? Take the quiz!

ok - see i live here in NYC - and i have to say that those questions aren't that obvious...(ok, i do feel a little dumb). in any event, it's interesting to know what the avg rent is, and to know that i surprisingly pay less than the average...
1yeah, I pay waaaaaay less than average... but that's in Brooklyn
2i have a friend who's husband was transfered to NYC about 2 years ago. while they were looking for a house his company put them up in an apartment near times square. it was 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 8oo sq ft; $4,500 a month. oh, and it was decorated from the 70's
an explosion of orange and
brown. it did have a weight room and a game room, but still, $4,500???
3Wow. I'm going to shut my mouth the next time I bitch about paying $900 for a 1 bedroom in this city.
4Ok, I'm with ilanac. I'm from NYC and the questions are a bit odd (and I'm sorry but the one about the apt. rent kinda pissed me off just because I keept wondering "What size? One bedroom? Two? Studio? Neighborhood? What?!")
But the thing about NYC and Houston was just scary. I ddin't think it was MORE than TWICE the amount! Geez. Then again, being able to get Thai at 2 in the morning does have perks to NYC. But yeah, its super expensive just surviving here (man, it kills me when I think with what most people pay in rent yearly they could buy big ol' houses with land somewhere else).
But I got nothing but love for my city.
5Average rent I got ... but where does Manhattan rank in the country if Queens is fifth?
6Oh my. It really puts my rent into perspective. But I don't live in NYC. It's sad, a person here in MS can live off of $32,000 but that's like $90,000 for NYC. Crazy.
7Holy...
8I love living in this city... hefty expenses and all..

I live in NYC - pretty pumped my rent is so far below the average but it definitely gets really expensive here. I've had a few days when I just want to go back to Ohio because it can be so difficult and overwhelming. Then I think about how exciting it is to live here and how many fabulous things are just at my fingertips that I realize it's all worth it. Someday I'll move back to Ohio so I can actually save money (and I truly love Ohio) but for now, I wouldn't give up my amazing life here.
10I live in NYC/Queens we just purchase a home and the average rent is about what we pay for our mortgage. Sometimes I think living in NYC is really overrated maybe because I'm use to it and I know not to get caught up in the hype. I think when people think of NYC they think Sex in the City. But you can live and have a great time my husband and I do on less than the 123K a year.
11K-WEENS???
12I live in Houston, and I've been to NYC to visit...and yeah, I totally believe all of these.
I know some people who have parents who work in NYC but live in the Houston metro...they live pretty darn well!
13I was interested in moving to NYC but it was too much red tape to get an apartment that it would've been in my father's name and all. I decided to stay put in D.C with my $622 apartment.
140 / 3 !!
15I am jealous of you NYC ladies! I love the city and will be visiting in June. I try to get there once a year. I know it is expensive so I save up for a few months before so I can have a great time in the city. If I wasn't so setteled here I would move in a New York minute!
16I live in NYC and though it is expensive - I believe its well worth it. Get 3 roommates if you have to, living in the city is ideal! The diversity is great, there's always something to do. I love it here.
17NY is expensive, but that doesn't change my mind about wanting to live there. I am wanting to move to NYC this year. For those that live there, any tips to save money or finding an apartment??
18I live in Manhattan...and yeah the real estate prices really stink here.
19bengalspice, manhattan is the most expensive urban area.
sunshine23, look at craigslist and try to rent a room or split the apt with friends. don't use a broker with fees.
im rich everyone i have lots of money, whats a recession? i love spending money on my dog poopie i buy her diamond lined clothes arent i wonderful, i love myself ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
20That's just crazy...
21i surprisingly pay less than the average living in the upper east side
22but i do agree that the 2nd and 3rd questions were kind of vague
Living in NYC is my absolute dream. I was planning on moving to Brooklyn this summer but I might wait another year or so. I am just finishing college and I don't have the money or a job to be able to survive.
