We're all about saving more money in 2009, and while total deprivation is not the road to happy saving, trimming back on some of the extras we previously afforded ourselves can make the difference between an empty savings account and a flourishing one. Personally, I've cut back on eating out; now that I've seen a big difference in my monthly savings, home-cooked meals and bagged lunches have never tasted so good! What expenses have you been cutting back on lately?

hmmm, eating out . . . buying generic/store-brand products like we talked about yesterday . . . i don't know, i didn't spend that much before . . . eating out i guess. I've always brought homemade lunch to work but it's not like super cheap, I still eat good stuff I'm just too picky to buy stuff at work. I would never go out thought for lunch that costs like $20 around here.
1Hmmm I've secretly found a new love in the "Dollar Store" near my apt. I get trash bags and junk that I need there.
2I have been trying to limit myself to one breakfast, one lunch and one dinner out per week.
3I spend a bit more at the grocery store, but the difference to my bank account is noticeable!
I'm with aimeeb, I discovered my local dollar store... At Christmas, I got all of my wrapping paper, ribbons, and labels - $4! They have the "Force Flex" bags there, which is great! If you wander around, you can find some pretty neat things.
4not on food i cant do that just cant
5Eating out. But for me it wasn't about saving money. I'm picky about what I eat. However, I did notice a considerable savings in our budget.
6I've stopped buying fancy lotions, hand soap and body wash--Jergens and Dial are my new friends!
I also plan out meals so I'm only buying groceries that we'll use and not throwing unused food away.
7I've been bringing my lunch to work more, buying generic food brands, and shopping more at Dollar General and Dollar Tree.
I also bought a nice, warm, snuggly throw so I can cut the thermostat down and still be nice and cozy while I sit on the couch.
8Eating out is always on my list. I love restaurants, but it's so much cheaper to eat at home. I am also trying to cut back on drinking. Expensive bottles of wine are a vice of mine.
9I'm trying to get the hubby to cut back on eating out. It's not easy though.
10Next will be alcohol. Having a drink once or twice a week instead of nightly will really help our budget.
Mainly drinking for me since I've been cutting back on everything else for quite some time. I'll have a beer or two before I go out so I don't need to buy anything at the bar.
11I'm eating out less. I used to do it a few times a week, grabbing fast food on the way home or going out to eat with friends/family, but I'm trying to eat out just once a week now. It's tough, but I'm managing. I'm also trying more store brands while grocery shopping and cutting coupons more. I've always brought my lunch to work, so I'm still doing that.
12I've cut back on eating out. I don't shop anymore, unless I really, really need it (like new socks). I've been avoiding the mall, and I couldn't be happier!
13I basically only buy things that are on sale at the grocery store. There are always a variety of veggies, pastas, and canned things on sale so I plan my meals around that. I also go to dollar stores and stores like Tuesday Morning if I feel the need to buy something new for the house.
14I've cut back a lot on eating and drinking out, and also only buy things that are on sale at the supermarket now. Also, we got a Brita water pitcher thing, and it's already paid for itself and more in the money saved on buying bottled water.
15I have a tendancy to buy gifts for people to make care packages to let friends know I'm thinking of them - and usually their kids too. By holding back and just sending a letter instead I'm saving, but it is hard sometimes!
16chatondeneige my dollar store has some awesome finds. I get a lot of my cleaning products, trash bags, tupperware and junk there, same stuff as they have at Walmart but for a dollar
I love it.
17Eating out! I've gone 21 days so far without any fast food.
18I have started to cook more at home, utilize the Dollar store for my household items. Buy generic items from the grocery store at at times I have found that the generic items taste better than their name brand counterparts.
19Like many have said, buying things on sale and dollar stores. For entertainment, we use free movie rental coupons or go to the library. I also think if you feel you have a lot of extra free time -- and you would normally buy something or pay to do something to fill it -- use it to volunteer! You'll keep busy and help others.
20Along with saran wrap and grocery bags, I always always buy party supplies at the dollar store. A tablecloth that I can just throw away afterwards, colored napkins, plasticware, patterned cups... for one-time use stuff it is much cheaper.
21TidalWave true!
22I'm cutting back on going out to eat! It's amazing how the cost of one dinner can equate to at least a week's worth of groceries.
23Ooh, I love the Dollar Store!! I buy stuff there that I used to buy at other stores, but it's so much cheaper. Also, we have been leaving our thermostat at 55 and are using the wood stove more to save on utility bills. Other than that, we really haven't had to cut back a lot because we've always kind of been frugal. We don't eat out much as it is and we don't buy a lot of unnecessary stuff.
24I absolutely cut back in the food category. I started taking my lunches to work, eat breakfast at home (as opposed to grabbing a muffin at the cafeteria), and have stopped buying as many luxury foods at the grocery store.
25we've been eating out less, going out less in general, shopping less, and well...making sure that we're truly participating in any coupon/discount program that we can. it's really hard these days to cut back even further.
26Coupons, coupons, coupons, and store brands!
27Packing lunch, buying in bulk.
28I, like a lot of people, shop more at the dollar store now. I also am using more natural home cleaning products, like baking soda. I have become a coupon fanatic and for a while my sister would get the Sunday paper and just throw them away. I am actually buying a used printer so I can get coupons off of the internet.
I do less purchasing now and really stick to my list after I have researched for the best prices.
29I've cut way back on eating out, canceled Netflix, do more cooking and less convenience stuff from the grocery store, just started buying powdered milk now that my daughter is almost 3 (she hasn't complained about the taste so that's a bonus!), use things until they're gone, try to do without replacing things if at all possible (so no new clothes in many months), buying things a year ahead when they're on clearance that my daughter can wear when she gets bigger, buying in bulk, packing my lunches. I make significantly less than federal poverty levels at the moment ("underemployed" is the term I believe applies to my situation) but am doing everything I can to stay off of welfare benefits. Oh, also have turned the thermostat down to about 62 and only turn it up to about 68 when the temps go below 10 degrees.
30I'm staying away from Target, Home Depot & JoAnn Fabrics. I go in for one thing and leave with a cart full!
31We are trying to cut back on groceries, our biggest "non-home related" bill.
Of course going out is cut back. It's so easy to spend 50 dollars on one night out.
