Most of us have had a few jobs since college, which is generally expected as job hopping is used to move forward with our careers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers average more than 10 different jobs by age 42, but more people are staying in their jobs longer as the economy has weakened.
Because there aren't a lot of positions available to change jobs when workers are ready for a better opportunity or a higher salary, job hopping has slowed down quite a bit. Even when opportunities exist, many employees are fearful to leave the job they know and take the risk of joining a new company. A survey from job search website TheLadders.com found that 62 percent of workers think they won't achieve their career goals at their current company, which means those goals may be put on hold until the job market turns around.

I can't achieve my ultimate goals per se, but this is the best stepping stone for me for where I eventually want to be. So in a way, I can achieve those being here, but one day I'll have to go elsewhere to ultimately do so. Does that make sense?
1Ultimately, I don't want to live in the state I am now, so acheiving my goals isn't so much an option here... but it's the perfect place for me right now. In this economy, I doubt seriously I'm going to find another company that will pay for my school and give me the amount of overtime hours I need to stay in the black.
2I thought my job could be a great opportunity for me. But I've since learned that it's something I definitely do not want to do, so I guess it's helped me in that way.
3Absolutely. I work for a very large computer company and have somehow managed to get onto the career track I wanted (technical writing) after serving as a technical support peon for years. It was just a matter of getting into the right places at the right time and sticking my neck out there on a few occasions to achieve some recognition.
I don't expect to stay at the company forever, but it will be a great stepping off point.
4I am able to train for a better position at my current job and eventually, I can move up fairly well. Our company encourages people to stay with them and grow with the company.
5Nope, my current employer does things quite backward, and I don't believe that I have many opportunities, especially since they already screwed me for a few things.
6My next job [grad school, hopefully!] won't BE the achievement of my ultimate goals, but it will definitely help!
P.S. The guy's face in the picture with this article is EXACTLY the face I made when I heard how hard it was going to be finding a job in this economy. Sad.
7Frankly, I'm not sure what my career goals ARE ... I've never had a 20-year plan or anything like that. But I'm not happy in my current job and my company doesn't really encourage people moving around; and with the state of my industry (layoffs galore) it might be time to consider other, more stable fields. So I guess my career goal is to find a new career!

9honestly, i don't think that i can. the biggest issue is that my company doesn't have the position that's one up from where i am right now which is the position that i should be at. there is NO ONE in the entire company that has the title, and that makes things hard since it means that if i want to move up, i would have to jump 2 positions and there aren't any openings to have that happen. it's really frustrating because i know that i'm good enough to be above where i'm at now, but unless i look to make a move, i won't get there, and i like my company

11Since I have been screwed over 4 times for a promotion, I highly doubt it. Which is fine now since I will be moving out of this state in February (thank god!) But, I used to think this was a company I could move up with. I was wrong.
12I am in the wrong industry. I want to become a professional photographer and an art director as well. Once I finish school in a few years I'll have a better chance of getting the career that I want. In the meantime I hope my experience helps me get in the industry
