As someone who has been in two weddings this year and attended a few others, I was shocked to learn that nearly 30 percent of you didn't spend a penny on weddings in 2008. Twenty-four percent of you spent $100-$500 on weddings, which tells me that most of these events required little traveling.
I'm with the 16 percent who spent more than $5,000 on weddings this year, and with my own nuptials just a few months away I certainly am not complaining about this money spent. I just figure that if I managed to pay for everything related to my friends' weddings this year, I can certainly manage to save that additional amount in 2009 when my wedding calendar is much lighter.

Yay! I'm getting married in exactly 4 months
:D
. I didn't spend anything this year, but btwn our wedding and 4 others next
year (3 in France!) it's gonna be well over $5000 . . .but a lot of mini-vacations too so that's ok.
1this almost makes me feel bad about my wedding in April of '09. it's a destination wedding which means that people are going to have to spend a bit of $$ to go, but oh well. i've already convinced myself that if people can't afford to go - then that's ok. it'll just be a small group of people.
2i didn't spend much this year, but i spent a bit. i attended only one friend's wedding, but since it was a low-budget affair, i had to spring for my own bridesmaid's gown, which was about $180.
not bad, really.
whenever the BF and i decide to tie the knot, we're doing it justice-of-the-peace-style. ;p
3I'm not getting married anytime soon, and most of the people I know who are getting married I'm not close too [so i won't be in the party or even invited]...so I'm happy I'm saving all that money!
When I get married I hope weddings will be cheaper to have.
And I personally didn't spend a penny on weddings this year, though I went to one...my dad buys our "family" presents! ;D
4I didn't spend anything last year, but I may/probably will be getting married in '09. Since my boyfriend has picked the location, I'm going to imagine that we're going to spend a ton of money, which I'm on the fence about. I love the place and since it is where he fell in love with me and knew he wanted me in his life forever, I can't really say no to it.
5I only went to one wedding and probably spent about $400. That includes: Gifts for the wedding and wedding shower; new dress & shoes for the wedding (since my only dresses are very casual); gas money to drive to and from Houston to Dallas. And one night in the Hilton Southlake which was totally worth it and has made it really hard to stay in hotels that are truly in my budget. It's a lot, but I didn't mind since it was oldest friend. If I had several weddings a year it might be different.
6I went two weddings in 2008 and I spent no more than $700 in total - gifts and bachelorette parties included. The two brides are my very closest friends and I am no cheapskate, but I didn't totally splurge either because my friends wouldn't expect that of me.
7I'm sorry, but $5000+ sounds utterly insane to me unless we're talking destination weddings galore.
try not to feel bad ilanac. hopefully you did everything you could to help your destination wedding guests with the financial burden.
for my destination wedding we gave people over one year's notice to save money, secured beachfront homes with kitchens so we wouldn't have to eat out all the time, found affordable beach homes, and planned a lot of touches that were very inexpensive with a communal flair.
8the cake is making me hungry !
9ummm I hope more content gets added to this site!
10Also disappointed with the content. My daughter is getting married in August '09, and I have been looking for information, but haven't found much here.
11Hi
We have not had our church wedding yet, I am just starting to plan it and wow, there is so much to do! We got married in my home city I grew up in by the kindest Judge! I will post the beautiful sentiments he said during the ceromony. We both knew we were meant to be and just did not want to wait. I would have to say that between the marriage license, copies of birth certificates, my dress, his outfit....and other costs...we spent about $500-$600+...just for this civil ceremony. LOL, I am getting a lil scared how much the "big" wedding will cost. Plus, I am and was raised all of my life as a strict Catholic and my husband is of another religion which I am not familiar with. From what he tells me, it is quite different from my religion. Geez, we are still having our differences over what church to be married in. One of my concerns is I want my children to be baptised in the Catholic church, which I don't think he is too wild about. Oh, well, I am sure many couples go through the same disagreements. We can work it out
12if i going i'm going to take 1 year at least
13i think this cake is soooooooooo tasty
14At first I thought the expense breakdown in the feature article was how much BRIDES spent on their own weddings! I was like, "okay, there's NO way that only 16% of brides are having $5,000+ weddings..." Glad to see the clarification that it's how much people are spending on OTHERS' weddings.
With that in mind, I think Dustin and I have spent way under $500 collectively in the past year on weddings. This includes traveling - gas, hotel, food cost, etc. We tried to keep in mind that our wedding is coming up soon, so we needed to keep the costs down.
Speaking of our wedding, ours is in six weeks! Yay!
