Exorbitant gas prices practically defined how we spent our money this year and dominated many cocktail party conversations. Those who rely on their cars for commuting were hit the hardest, while regular public transportation riders watched as their buses became overstuffed with passengers. Because many of us will remember 2008 as the year gas prices compromised our lunch money, I'm wondering how much you approximately spent at the pump this year.

my car is sooo gas inefficient and it costs so much to fill the tank that i'm really thankful that i live in NYC and it sits at my mom's house most of the time. the only time that i drive it is like 1-5 miles on the weekend and perhaps for the little road trip that doesn't happen all that often.
1well, it costs (or it did this past year) 85.00 to fill up my car and I have to fill up once a week so I guess that is somewhere between 4k and 5k...But thank goodness the prices have dropped now it only costs me about 55-60 to fill up! I think that was great advice, in an earlier post, to put that extra savings directly into a saving account.
2With both my husband and I filling up once a week with premium, we spent a little over 4K !@#$*&^
That makes me sick! :*[
3I guesstimated. I figure between $1-$2k. I live pretty close to my work and didn't travel much this year. Only reason I said that much is because I drive a freaking gas hog but can't afford anything else right now. I'll be driving this vechicle until the wheels fall off.
4$0, I am so thankful for CTA.
5I drive an SUV so between $1-2K. I live close to work and I rarely take long drives especially when you live in NYC.
6WOW...
7I spend £2600 a year, which is about $5000... sad
but we have horrid roads over here
8I estimate I've spent about $300 this year. My car is my primary mode of transportation, living in LA and all. Thank god for my hybrid!
9I estimated somewhere between 500-1000. I fill up once every 2-3 weeks. The cost of filling up has varied between $15-35.
10I didn't keep track, but it worked out to be about 7 or 8 gallons a week with my fuel-efficient little Saturn. Not sure how much gas my husband's S10 used, but I'd estimate we spent around $1500 or so.
And sonya ina....unless your car specifically requires the premium fuel, you don't actually need it. The only thing the extra octane does is prevent the knocking in your engine.
11Spectra -- unfortunately my husband and my turbo VW's require it :[
12Sonya, I also have a VW which requires a higher grade of fuel and I would rather spend more on the higher grade than have my car crap out on me later.
13Yeah, I suppose if you have a turbo, you do need the primo stuff...that sorta sucks for you guys, although you do get more performance and power. At least now, gas is sort of cheap so enjoy it while you can.
14I just got a car last month (unfortunately I need it for my new job), so way less than $500.
15Yeah, having the turbo is fun for driving, but not so fun when you're spending all your money to fill it up! Now that the price of gas isn't so bad, I actually only spent about $25 to fill up the other day, so I was a pretty happy camper!
16Oh lord, no idea...
17I spend a ton on gas because I travel so much, but thankfully my car is great on gas.
I love laughing at people with SUVs when they're at the gas station!
18I admit, this year I've been glad I opted for a boring Japanese sedan (aka a "momcar") last time I bought. I'm also the chauffeur for the two kids 90% of the time.
A fill-up, at the year's top prices, was close to $70.
19Last time it was about $30.
I didnt feel like doin the math but I was spending around $150-200 a month on gas.
