If you ask me, travel is one of the best things in life, so it's only natural to ask about the topic as part of our Best of 2008 polls.
Travel is one goal we're always happy to save for, though airlines made affordable travel difficult this year by imposing fees on just about everything. Many Americans decided to spend their vacation time at home and forgo long-distance family holiday gatherings because of price increases, though the cost of travel has begun to come down now that airlines and hotels are having trouble attracting business.

I only traveled this year for business. It's been a very lean year.
1We only spent money on gas to go on a few road trips down to see my parents and to my inlaws in other parts of the state. No elaborate trips for us this year.
2About $600. To go home for school breaks.
3me and my hubby are still doing the whole 'long distance relation' thing so for now im spending alot on tickets and gas $
4I chose between 500 & 1000 because I went to Vegas and did a little gambling, tours, and saw some shows.
5When you're saving up for a house and trying to pay off the last of your debt, vacations will just have to wait.
6more than 5 grand. we went to antigua for our honeymoon and new york just for fun. definitely a year of traveling. and 2009 will be the year of staying home, lol.
7I said about $4000...it sounds like a lot but I went to two countries(Belize and Japan) and a few american vacations as well... we were able to do a lot, see a lot and bring back a few things with the amount of money spent in all the locations we visited (and had saved for a while in order to go to those places!)
8I chose between $4k and $5k because (1) I live in Texas and road trips to Dallas, Houston, and Austin are commonplace (and going to 7 weddings in 2008 doesn't help), and (2) I did a lot of traveling within the US: NYC, Kansas City, Minnesota, Tulsa, New Orleans, Baton Rouge. It was a great year for travel for me, and I'm starting January 2008 the same way: D.C. for the Inauguration and Las Vegas for a bachelorette party. If there is anything I'm willing to splurge on, it's travel!
9All I did was buy 2 round trip tickets to Santiago, Chile and that cost about $3,000.
10When I needed a vacation I resorted to sleeping in and taking extra long showers.
11We spent alot on traveling this year. We took our family of 6 to Hawaii for a week, then in Nov. hubby and I went to Malta and Italy (Malta was for hubby's work and most of that was paid for by his work- we had to buy my ticket and he used his flyer miles for that, and we had to pay for our meals that was it), but the Italy part was extra and we paid for that. We definitely spent more than 5,000 on travel this year.
12I didn't even use my vacation time. It was way lame.
13Maybe around $1,500? I'm NOT entirely sure.
I went on a
Caribbean cruise with my girlfriends but my boyfriend paid for it. I just had to pay for whatever I bought on the Caribbean islands and on the ship and for all of the booze I drank.
I also went to other places within the USA like Savannah GA and Hilton Head SC with my
boyfriend and Charleston SC 6 times throughout the year to visit family and friends. I also took ALOT of weekend girlfriend trips to Orlando FL and Gainesville FL since they are both only 2
hours away from where we live. But most of my money was spent on shopping and booze on these trips.
14Let's see ... 5 trips up to see my long distance BF in NC, road trip to DC, Chicago in the summer, NYC 3 times, Arizona in September, Charleston in August, Virginia in May, plus a few trips to northern Florida ... I would say more than $5,000! Oh well, I love to travel, and who knows what places I'll go in the new year! So far, there is talk of a cruise, Vegas, Seattle, and maybe South America or China! Yeah!
15I had a big travel year this year. 5 trips to NYC to visit the BF, Nebraska, Seattle, Vancouver, California... Luckily I have family in all those places so I didn't have to pay for lodging. 3,000$ is about the most I spent.
16oops, I answered wrong. I was just thinking of my one week long vacation I took last spring when my boyfriend & I borrowed his sister's car and went on a New England roadtrip. It wasn't too expensive because we stayed with family and friends a few nights. But I was also in a long distance relationship for 10 months of the year--so add $200-300/month for airfare to Chicago. I went to Miami last month for a long weekend and I flew down to visit my family for Thanksgiving. I should have picked the $3K to $4K option. So glad I moved last month--my boyfriend & I will save a lot of money on airfare now!
17when i think about it after adding it all up - it's interesting to see that i spent a lot more than i thought on travel this past year. i took quite a few trips but they were all great deals - so it's not soo bad in the grand scheme of things.
18I only did one short road trip to a Labor Day party the next state over, but it was to meet/hang out with my boyfriend's family so he paid for all the gas.
Oh and my parent's drove maybe 6-8 hours to visit relatives for a long weekend, which is becoming the norm now that travel expenses are up.
19More than 5000. I went to Aruba, a cruise with my best friend, New York, Ottawa and just road trips nearby. I had a lot of days off this year and I hate staying home doing nothing.
20I spent two thousand, to spend two weeks in Nicaragua working in medical clinics on the island of Ometepe. WORTH IT. I'd love to go back, but it is not my budget, alas.
21About $500 - $1000 the hubby and I went to FL and Canada
22Went to hawaii for my friends wedding.
23I love traveling... I went to Hawaii, Washington DC, and am going to Europe this weekend. I normally spend less than this in a year on average.
24I spent $0 dollars on traveling this year.
25I can't vote on this! Where's the "other people paid" option?
I DID travel...I stayed in Salt Lake City for 2 months!
But *I* didn't pay anything for it, air or room & board! Thank you, research grants! =D
26$5000+ Excluding business travel, personal travel to and from Germany isn't exactly cheap.
27More than $5,000.
28This year we went to Buenos Aires for three weeks and to the states several times to visit family (LA and Oregon). I went to Florida for business and we traveled lots locally where we live in Costa Rica.
Can we have a travelsugar or journeysugar now? I live to travel and want to read about it more. There are soooo many great topics from last minute deals, to info on locales, to ideas for unusual vacations (volunteering etc.), travel clothes and fashion, great travel bags, etc. Think how great it could be and the expansion would likely offer great ad revenue too!
29i agree booglass id love a travelsugar!
i went on my first study abroad at 28, it was awesome but expensive so this year I spent way more than usual. Usually I might go to Hawaii and a few times to New England.
30I flew roundtrip from Las Vegas to D.C. 11 times this year... My immediate family lives in D.C. and I moved out to Vegas in October of last year.
We're a close group and I'm the only one who lives so far away, plus I'm the baby of the family, so my parents have been having a hard time with me being gone.
I'm hoping to move back to the east coast soon though.
31ALOT!
I went to Dominican Republic last holiday season w/the fam but didnt get back until Jan 2008 so that counts!
Went to the Bahamas w/the boy, he surprised me w/an all expense trip but I still made some purchases before and during the trip
St.Maarten w/the girls..
all in all 2008 was THE travel year..aka I have no idea how much I actually spent...thousands im sure
32Well we go back and forth to France every three months, so that's about 1k a month right there, so 12k for the year. We also went to NYC twice this year, Las Vegas once, Spain and Switzerland a couple of times. So in all I would say that we spent closer to 20k. But some of that was work related so we should be able to deduct it from our taxes.(I hope!)
33i went to NYC for a weekend in july for a convention (HOPE). not only is it a wicked dirty smelly city, but it's wicked expensive too!
34I traveled a bunch this year.. Miami in May for 4 days with my girlfriend, Bahamas in September for 6 days and on my way home stayed in Miami for another 2 days, went back to Miami at the end of October for a few days to visit friends and just landed this morning from there after a three day trip.. I think I like Miami lol
35Over 5K.
36I recently made a list of my travels and including business I will have made 10 trips by the time this year finishes. That doesn't include local getaways in the LA area, just trips where I had to fly. I think all the weddings of people in my life have passed so I can do more pleasure/leisure travel in 2009 - not just travel for other people but a trip for ME! I spent at least $2000 so think of the trip that could buy me!
37$700 for plane tickets for me and husband to spend Christmas with his family
