As we inch closer to a new year, I'm asking you to tell me what you think is the Best of 2008.
It may seem like every workday is Groundhog Day, entering the same neutrally decorated office and seeing the same faces wishing you good morning. While your daily work life may not change much day-to-day, several office trends emerged this year to shake things up a bit. The trends make it clear that employers are paying more attention to the possibilities that technology brings, saving money, and a healthy workforce.

I'm still not eligible yet as I'm a new employee, but telecommuting is one of the reasons why I took my current job. We get the option of doing it once a week after six months of employment.
1Telecommuting.
2Telecommuting. I don't have the opportunity to do it very often, but I love it.
3I don't get to do any of these things, but I picked four-day workweek. I wouldn't like telecommuting; not for me.

The support staff in our office was given the office of going 10 hr/ 4 day work week -- many of them do it
...now, if only I could telecommute to court
7One of the things I was most excited about when taking my current position was the weekly telecommute option. It is Awesome!

10At first I perked up at 4-day work week, but it seems like that would be tough to swing for a full time job. So I say, cut out the commute time instead!

12Scaled-back business trips. A lot of trips are for meetings/trainings that can easily be conducted via teleconfrence. Cutting back the travel is helping a lot of companies cut their costs, takes workers away from their families less, and has a much lesser impact on the environment.
I would have said 4 day work week (who wouldn't want that?)...until I thought that that was one less day I'd be paid. And telelcommuting is only good for the people who can really focus on work fully, even when they're home. I don't think I'm really one of those people!
13I took a four-day work week to mean that you would work the same number of hours, but just come in to work fewer days, so you would get the same amount of money. (Like the 4 10-hour days running mentioned.)

The four-day work week does imply 10 hour workdays. I've updated the choices so there's less confusion.
15Telecommuting, but also the 4-day workweek. (Hard to choose!)
I've been working at home for years and I'm glad others are getting the opportunity in increasing numbers...earlier this year though I approached my boss about longer 4-day workweeks instead of 5, and that is working out too...and I'm "on call" on the off day and always check in on email/Skype so she knows I am available when needed.
It gives me more personal time to get things done during the week, and gives me longer periods of time while in a "work mindset" to perform. I don't mind the longer hours, because the day off becomes "my day" and really helps life feel more in balance.

18I wish I could telecommute to the lab, but that'd be pretty difficult. I would add "Employers adding extra benefits to employees"...we get a complete "wellness exam" every year that includes a bone scan, cholesterol/glucose check, BP check, colonoscopy (if you're over 50) and a mammogram (if you're a woman). It's about $300-$400 worth of tests and it's definitely a nice perk if you have a crappy health insurance plan that doesn't cover some of that stuff.
19While I'd LOVE a 4 day work week, I like the idea of telecommuting even more when possible. You can stay home and work in your PJ's, but more importantly, you can save on commuting, you're less-likely to go out to eat for lunch because there's probably more food readily available, and you will more than likely do most communication over video conferencing (don't wear your PJ's for that one), email, or phone, so you will use less paper.
