It's a troubling time for the publishing industry, and the largest US company of them all, Time Inc., is reacting by cutting jobs from its magazines. Time has asked for 100 volunteers from its editorial staff at a handful of publications, including Time, People, and Sports Illustrated, to volunteer to give up their jobs.
Volunteers would of course leave with severance packages (terms undisclosed to the media). It's a tough job market out there in many industries, though some are still supposedly good bets for finding open positions. What would you do?

1I wouldn't, but I have a friend who was ticked that our company didn't ask for volunteers instead of just making cuts. He would have left voluntarily, and now he feels guilty leaving when they cut so many others but kept him.
2No WAY. I'm working in my dream job for a top publishing company so definitely not, if I had the choice!
3I might do it. Hubby and I have been talking about how the income I make right now is pretty disposable... so if I could get severance I might consider it and then work on some projects that I wish I could be doing but can't since I'm full time.
Meanwhile, I'd be looking for a new job but not as actively/frantically as I would if I were simply fired with no severance.
4My dad did this with his company a few years ago. It was either leave voluntarily with a GREAT severance or face the possibility of being fired later with no severance. My dad took the severance, but it turns out he would have kept his job if he had stayed. I don't think he really liked his job, and he has a better one now and has more time to work at his Krav Maga studio in the evenings.
5Yes. I don't like my job but my boss is really bitter about people quitting -- gives them bad recs and such -- so this would be an easy way out

7Maybe. It depends on the severance and how much I had saved up.

15If you have a plan of escape--another job lined up, it's a good thing. But if you find yourself unable to find another job, you have to weigh the pros and cons. I did it a couple of years ago, and taking the plunge to a job with half the salary caused some crazy financial set-backs, but I have no regrets because the former job was making me physically ill. But then, sometimes letting go is the best thing you can do. My leap of faith lead me to a completely new line of work, and after much suffering, I have found my way into another job which I like so much more.
16Only if I had another job lined up. How would that look when you were going for job interviews? You could try to market it as being a team player, but ultimately it just has this kind of "Eh. Why work?" Lazy-ish undertone to me. In my mind it makes more sense to work harder to be sure that if they make cuts, they don't cut you. And even if they did choose to let you go, you still usually get a severance package, right?
17I currently hate my job. I'm deeply underpaid, and overused. So, yes. I would give up my job for a severance. I could use that severance to get the Microsoft Certifications that I need and get a better paying fulfilling job doing something I like.
18Sure, if I had something else lined up. In our marriage, my income is pretty much the "extra" money that we don't really NEED to live on. So yeah, if the severence package was decent, I'd do it.

20i don't think that it's that cut and dry. i know a LOT of people in the industry and SEVERAL who work for Time Inc and it's been something that they've heard buzz about for a while. i think that if you're in sales then you might be able to get another position but times are hard for everyone - so i would have to do a lot of thinking about this.
