Life is full of unproductive what-ifs, but this is one that I hear often. Unhappy professionals think that if only they majored in something different, they'd be on a better career path. Some workers have even wished they'd majored in something more enjoyable because their work has nothing to do with their specific education. Do you ever wish you had chosen a different major?

I just wish I hadn't gone to school or if I did I had majored in business or something I can apply to my photo studio. I should've just assisted with my friend and developed my portfolio and moved to NYC or LA but then I don't know if I'd be happily married to my awesome husband q:
1Unless you're studying something that specifically is required for a career path -- like computer engineering -- your major really has very little impact on the jobs you have after college. It's all about the skills you developed and the different internships/clubs/jobs/volunteer work you have to put on your resume. I LOVED being an English major -- and it definitely didn't limit my career to just teaching. I went on to a major finance/marketing job after that. If you have the basic skills set (communication, writing, task-oriented), your company will teach you the tasks you need to know that are specific to the job.
2Yes... I have a BA in Russian with a minor in Business and it is completely pointless! HAH! Even though I wish I was more marketable, I honestly still can't imagine having a different degree... everything else was so boring to me
3Yes and no. I majored in Music Industry and I worked in the business for a number of years before moving on, but sometimes I feel like I should have majored in something else. When it comes down to it, I believe everything happens for a reason, and I probably wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't chosen this path.
4I LOVED my major BA major(art history) and it has nothing to do with my current industry (marketing). I did however choose Mass Communications for my Master's Degree, and I wish I had stuck with Art History because in retrospect, I was just scared that I wouldn't be able to make it as a museum curator. I like marketing and all, but I miss museums!
5Yes! I have a Bachelors of Music.... and I'm a legal assistant! I wish I had maybe gone to a university instead of a conservatory and tried something a bit more practical.
6I don't know that my major makes that much of a difference. But I do wish I had done better in school so I could get into grad school easier. I had a hard time staying on top of things while always working full time.
7I knew I didn't have a lot of appealing options so I know I ended up taking the best decision. I know I could have ended up with something completely pointless.
8sometimes I wish I had chosen something easier!!
But I think my double major (biology & chemistry) is definitely the best for the career path(s) I want -- doctor and/or research scientist. A person can definitely get into medicine with an arts degree, but it's unlikely they'd have access to the dual MD/PhD programs, which is what I'm really interested in.
I didn't outright choose my major though -- I just declared it last month and I'm in my junior year! It was really accidental.. I just had so many science courses, this was the shortest route to graduation lol
I think it's easy to switch though. I mean, if I wanted an English degree after I finish this first Bachelor's, it would probably only take another two years (since all my pre-requisites & options are filled) so if you make the wrong choice the first time around, you can always correct it.
Majors don't matter!
9I did my BA in Political Science. Loved it..wouldn't trade it for anything more practical. Do and study what you love...money and success will figure itself out and follow.
10Absolutely! I wish I had pursued an education degree instead of accounting. I would have vacations/holidays with my husband, who is a teacher, and my son when he starts school. I am looking into getting my certification anyway and changing careers. The pay may not be great, but there is always a need for teachers and the benefits/retirement are really good.
11yes. i wish i had done psychology and political science, not public health. boo.
12I majored in Film which is what I had my heart set on years before attending college, but now that I've graduated I wish I had gone to another school and studied interior/set design. I still could do that I guess.
13I wish I had been more focused about where I wanted to be after college. I should have interned more, or had more work experience ... or made a decision about whether I wanted to go to law school and have done that directly out of college.
14I'm majoring in International Relations which involves a broad range of classes, so I think I'll be prepared for plenty of different types of jobs. I'm learning about history of various parts of the world, taking languages, and studying economics and political science. I have no idea what my job will be but I love my major because it's so varied.
15absolutely
I wish that I would have studied interior design or fashion merchandising instead of poly sci.
16or I wish that I would have stuck it out in business in place of switching to political science...it was my original plan to continue on through law school.
17Nope, I'm happy with my decision for my major. Although I'm not directly working in the field now, and it's not what I'm going to pursue as a career, I wouldn't have followed the path to where I am without it. Plus, Chemical Engineering gets you a pretty sweet starting salary.
18I have a BA in Theatre Arts Management, am using it in my current job, AND I love my job and loved college. Yay.
19I have a BA in Theatre Arts Management, am using it in my current job, AND I love my job and loved college. Yay.
20I have a BS in Photography and I'm glad I have it but I would like to pursue a teaching certification because I would really love to teach photography someday.
21I have a BA in philosophy, which meant I really had no choice but to go to law school. I searched the wanted ads for philosopher, but no one was hiring!! But seriously, my major didn't matter that much. I wanted to go to law school, so I studied something somewhat useful to getting admitted to law school, but mainly I just liked being a philosophy major. I kind of miss those days...so no, I'm happy with my choice.
22Nope. I am glad that I majored in Cellular Biology (and minored in English). I teach high school science now (Chemistry and Earth Science, my first year of teaching I taught Biology), and both majors are very helpful for me. I am glad that I did the hard sciences, especially as our gov't leans towards making teachers teach only the subjects they have degrees in. Whether I agree with that stance or not isn't the point, but I am glad that I did science and realized I wanted to be a teacher later.
23I was a pre-medicine major, since my university had a medical school. I think it is probably the #1 reason I didn't sweat getting into medical school, since I was very well-prepared for the MCATs, but I could have studied just as much by taking the pre-requisites and gotten the same score, or close enough. I don't really regret my decision, since it's how I became a doctor, but I wish I had studied something fun like film or psychology.
24I don't know. I sort of wish I had studied something that'd allow to get a super well-paid job, and quickly.
But on the other hand, I've always LOVED languages, and I had a blast studying languages and literature. My MSc in English Lit isn't really helpful when it comes to getting a job right now, but even if it was a horribly difficult year for a lot of reasons, I still get palpitations when I think about it because of how fantastic and interesting it was.
I guess at the end of the day, I sort of hate my job, but at least I have the satisfaction to know I studied what I liked and wanted.
25I have a Bachelors and Masters in Mass Communication - Journalism.
I picked it out sophomore year in high school and never looked back.
I definitely would not change it and I'm surprised at the opportunities it has offered me in my career thus far.
I'm actually contemplating going for my Ph.D. in the same major.
26I'm satisfied with my degree. However, in retrospect, I wish I went for something like accounting or finance.
27Nope. poly sci rocks.
28I wish I had considered all the options before choosing a major. Like syako, I decided I wanted to study journalism when I was in high school, and I went to a uni with a great j-program, so I didn't have that period of exploration.
I wouldn't change my degree necessarily, but now that my career goals are changing a bit, I wonder if a different degree (or a different path to the degree I have now) would have put me on a more satisfying path.
29I majored in Political Science and minored in Business and Economics. I work on DC on policy, so it was a perfect major for what I wanted to do and I love my career. However, I am not just that person. I would love to have taken an art history class or anthropology or even geology (rocks for jocks). My point is I was too focused on only taking classes that were useful and didn't explore other subjects in college. That's definitely my regret.
30I currently have a business major, but I kind of wish I'd stuck with nursing instead. It's a far more mobile profession, and I never really got the chance to explore it (only fifty students per year are admitted into the nursing school at the university I go to.)
31I will be graduating in May with my BBA in Business Management. But I really wish I would have stuck to Political Science. I actually find that interesting and it would definitley help if I still want to be a lawyer...
32I did choose a wrong major, but in a way i wouldn't have liked what i do without having made that mistake. I think as rule of thump, your first major should be general, hell you can always do a double major right? or you can minor like I did. If you're serious about going further at masters level you can become more of an expert. I am looking into perhaps doing a PhD in a few years now. Either that or I will open a gallery in 5 years max
33I got my BS in Sociology and now wished I would of double majored in Computer Science. Actually thinking of going back to get my second bachelor's degree in CS.
34No, I love my major. I couldn't see myself studying and it comes with a bonus, careers related to my major are generally "recession proof". The world always needs engineers.
35*I meant I couldn't see myself studying anything else.
36I will happy to graduate though cause then my brain wouldn't be so fried. Then I'll be able to type sentences that make sense.
I loved my major (Radio-TV-Film), but it hasn't become a career for me. I considered double-majoring in Education, and I really wish I had because at least I would have had a career.
37Maybe I should have double-majored. I'm too much into eduction. I can't stop learning.
38I went to back to college after I'd been out of high school for about eight years. I had no idea what I wanted to do, jsut that I couldn't be a receptionist for the rest of my life. One of my professor's inspired me to get an English degree, something that I was horrible at in high school. It hasn't helped me get a job in the field, but it showed me that I really can do a lot more than I originally thought. In the end, half of me wishes I had a different degree and the other half is really happy. I just wish that I had the money to go back and get a Masters and a Doctorate so that I could be a college professor too.
39i think that all in all i came to the right decision. i have several degrees - since i didn't know what i wanted to do while i was in school and luckily the last one that i got actually applies somewhat to what i'm doing .
40I'm still in school, and have a while to go. I could technically still change it, but I'm staying on the this path because it's something I'm passionate about. If it was my parents choice I would be major in pharmacy right now! It took a lot of arguing and tears to get to the point where I am right now. Hopefully I can make something out of it!
41I wish I could go back to school...
42I'm still in college and I've changed my major twice already. Originally, I went into early childhood education, then I switched to middle grades education so I could teach history, but then I decided I wanted nothing to do with the Texas public education system so I switched to sociology. I love sociology and have decided to go into social work after my degree is complete.
43Hmmmm..I went into college and took business classes even though they didn't interest me. After doing mediocre/poorly in those classes I decided I would try to pursue the one thing I really liked and found interesting (biology/env. sci.). I got even worse grades there as I realized that earning a biology degree required calculus and chemistry courses. Faced with the prospect of having to drop out after 2 yrs and answer to angry parents, I took a bunch of History classes and did really well. Ended up getting a History degree but only having a B- gpa due to the fresh/soph bio and biz classes. Now out for 2+ years, I haven't been able to find anything, and getting into grad schools with a mediocre gpa and no serious work exp. has not been easy. So if I could go back and do it over I absolutely would. (As someone posted above, I guess I could always go back and get another Bachelor's degree...I guess...)
44I love my major -- bioengineering, but i wish i had studied more.
45I wish I hadn't majored in English. I have a small time newspaper job at this point but am trying to find a fulltime job that pays better and just can't seem to get interviews in the various jobs that I apply to. I always though that being an English major was versatile but it just doesn't seem to be panning out for me. Very frustrating
46I'm double majoring in Psychology and sociology.... so lets see where that takes me... I don't know if I exactly want to be a psychologist... maybe I could be a motivational speaker!
47I wish I hadn't gotten a BA in English.
It feels pretty surreal complaining at all in this recession; I have a writing job and it's keeping me fat and secure. But I'd take almost any doorway job into scientific fieldwork, if only employers didn't see me as this eloquent pencil pusher with no practical skills.
Pfft, that will be the day.
48I got a BBA in Transportation and Logistics and its terrible. I went back after being out of school for several years so I wanted something practical. My real passion is in political science and geography. I was so focused on finishing school, I didn't realize how much I hated my major. Now I can't find a real job, and I am having a hard time not being bitter about the whole thing. Maybe I will go back and start over again.
