Everyone loves something free, even if it's just a nibble of food or a tiny sip of something. So, those little pieces of cut up scones at Starbucks aren't the product of a barista's boredom; they are there because your taste buds are tied to your wallet. Trader Joe's has a tasting station in the back of their stores and more often than not the featured item smells delicious, drawing customers to visit the other end of the store when they may just be there to pick up a few items.
According to a study from Arbitron, 35 percent of shoppers bought an item the same day they sampled it, and 58 percent said they'd buy an item they sampled in a later shopping trip. Two-thirds of shoppers offered free samples accept them no matter if they've heard of the product before or not. Do you always accept free samples when they're presented to you?

i actually don't try most samples - i think that the only time that i've really had something was at whole foods when they have fruit cut up or once or twice at Costco. the biggest reason that i don't is that i don't usually eat what they offer - if it's a bread treat or a meat thing since i'm a veggie. i CAN understand how there's value and strategy behind it. if you can tempt someone to try something then it's a great catalyst to buying things.
1I'll only try a sample if I am sure I am not allergic to it. Mainly, this means I get to try the samples of fruits, cheese, and milk that my grocery story always seems to have. Also, since their bakery is peanut-free, I can also try the samples there.
2I very rarely try samples. Usually the things they're offering aren't foods I'd eat normally or else I'm in a hurry to finish up my grocery shopping.
3If it looks tasty, why not?
4I'm a sucker for free samples.
5I'm usually good about not trying and buying unless I'm in Harry & David's...they have the BEST samples and I always end up buying after tasting.
6I love going to Whole Foods and Central Market to hunt down some free samples. Whenever I'm there I end up buying stuff, so I think it evens out.
7I think I tried a free sample at Wal-Mart once...I didn't go buy the product after though.
8I love free samples. I always get them at Sam's Club. I don't normally buy the products though.
9I like free samples:) Especially at Costco on the weekend. One time I had this amazing hummus and bought it the same day.
10trader joes does have great samples and their employees are always so friendly!
11Almost always!
12I rarely try samples because I'm a strict vegetarian. That being said, if I can eat it, I'll probably try it 75% of the time.. but I'll rarely buy unless it blows me away.
13I love free samples, especially from Whole Foods or Sam's Club. Few days ago they were giving out samples of hummus on pretzel chips and I bought those 2 products right there. Usually I'll try something and not buy it but this time I gave in.
14I am a sample-Wh*re when it comes to Hickory Farms in the mall.
15I die for free samples
16sample wh*res unite!
1799% of the time i dont try samples.
18I love trying samples, but to be honest, trying them does not make me more prone to buying. Sometimes, I might like the little taste they give, but would I want to buy an entire serving (or more)? Not hardly.
