Sarah Lavely, a former veterinarian, put her entrepreneurial spirit and $200,000 to work when she opened her San Diego business called Sarah's Smash Shack. She liked to express her frustration by breaking things and figured that she wasn't alone, so her business lets people that need release throw things like dinner plates and wine glasses against a wall in a soundproof room. If they want to, customers can hook up their iPods and create their own soundtrack for their smash session.
Lavely says that ceramic white dinner plates are her biggest seller because of the explosive way they break, and customers can buy a package that lets them break 15 plates in 15 minutes for $45. Markers are provided so customers can write on their breakable item, and the effect can be therapeutic for some. What do you think of her business, is it brilliant or baffling?

that's fantastic! I do hope they recycle what they break though!
1I'm one of those people who likes to break things as well. When I was going through my teenage angst years, I found a box of old cassette tapes and threw them against the wall of a spare bedroom. They shattered just like glass. I loved it. Today I have a 2 year old and can't express my anger with throwing stuff. I would definitely pay for some therapy like that, and to have someone else clean it up.

This is a cool idea. I don't think I would ever do it though. When I'm
mad I just tend to sulk and not talk to anyone.
3how wasteful.
4i hope the broken ceramic gets repurposed as mosaic tiles or something!
5i TOTALLY get this and i love the idea. i hope that she's recycling the shattered pieces though cause otherwise i might not like it so much. regardless there are SOO many times that i want to just throw things at my fiance but that's a bit harsh, but if there was a place that i could go to and do it, i would be so excited and i wouldn't mind paying a couple bucks to do it.
6It's not something I'd pay to do, but sounds like she's making a good business out of it.
7The news article says that the pieces are donated to schools and art programs around the region.
8That's pretty damn wasteful.
9That is a terrible waste of perfectly good items. How very American of her and the people who pay (PAY!) to do that. Geez, people, find another outlet for your frustrations.
10We have a Greek restaurant here in Portland that will let you break plates for free.
11chuckles @ Cuba's comment
Fun!
12I kindof get it, but usually if if I am frustrated enough that I need to break something, I need to do it THEN. Last week i got so pissed that i almost threw my computer across the room. I couldn't stand to have to go somewhere. Maybe if I were just walking by it and got a phone call that made me mad, but I feel like the drive over to the place would be enough to get me to calm down..
13There are loads better ways to let off some steam. This is a gimmick and wasteful.
14Friends and I have had this idea again and again...glad to see it's working out for her.
15I absolutely love it.
16A few things:
171. so wasteful, it makes me hurt. there are people who don't have any plates to eat off of, and people are PAYING to smash them? In what world does this make sense?
2. you're mad? frustrated? go for a freaking run. or THROW YOUR OWN DAMN PLATES FOR FREE, PEOPLE. Jeez.
TOO FUNNY, I was a camp Counselor for years and years in the late 80's through the 90's and i was the arts and crafts teacher. We had a ton of old plates from when the dining hall used porcelain still (they now use plastic trays) and i would let anyone who needed to vent come into my back room, write on a plate whatever they wanted (a persons name, cuss words, whatever) and smash the Sh*t out of it, its very theraputic, especially the loud noise.
18"there are people who don't have any plates to eat off of, and people are PAYING to smash them? In what world does this make sense?"
I dont know why but that quote makes me laugh.
19I'm just mad I didn't think of it! Darn. If someone will pay for it, oh well.
20Waste of money and waste of products.
21I think this is a Great ideal! I'm sure all will agree.....better then walking up to someone and punching them in the face. This seems like it would be the perfect exercise for people with bipolar disorder. Very therapeutic.
