The glow from a leisurely vacation can quickly turn into anxiety-induced insomnia the night before returning to the office. You don't care about showing off your tan to your co-workers who have been stuck in front of their computers; you just want one more day of not adhering to a tight schedule involving more than breakfast, lunch, happy hour, and dinner.
You can help yourself get back into the work groove by doing a little planning ahead of your vacation. When requesting time off, include the day after you're scheduled to fly home. Real Simple points out that your return to the office will be much more productive and less frazzled if you take the planned personal day following your vacation. Use the time to run errands and catch up on phone calls and emails so that you're not trying to juggle those details with your first day back in the office.

Good idea. I always suffer coming back from a vacation. It's hard to get back into the groove of things, definitely.
1you know, that's a GREAT idea if only it worked in the real world. i find that i get anxiety about being out of the office for just one day that if i were to schedule a personal day for the day after i come back from vaca - then i don't know what i'll do - i'll go nuts! i think that i tend to fly home late at night though - so it might make sense to schedule a half day so that i can at least come in late and get my self sitaution and acclimated back at home upon my return.
2I do the whole "take an extra day" thing, and it's fantastic. I can collect mail, pay bills, do laundry, get groceries, and still veg out a bit. If I'm feeling brave, I may even check work e-mail ahead of time.
I also try to plan something fun for that day or later in the week, just so it doesn't feel like a total crash down to reality.
3I think this is a great idea. You can still catch up on emails, misc. tasks, get a good to do list going.
I am getting married in three weeks and then going on a 10 day honeymoon. Were coming back on a thursday night so we can have the weekend to re-coop and fall back into the daily groove.
4This is a great idea, especially for people who tend to horde their vacation days. If I can't take an extra day off, I try to fly back on the early side, since the last day of a vacation is often occupied by flying anyway. I take an early flight back so I'm home in the afternoon rather than night.
5That sounds like a great idea, thanks! I usually only worry about getting enough sleep before going back to work, but then at the end of the first day at work I'm exhausted and really don't feel brave enough to face the laundry, grocery shopping, cooking and tidying of the suitcase.
