Recent events in the financial world have highlighted the reality that jobs don't come with a guarantee, no matter how stable the company authorizing our paychecks appears to be. I've reminded you to service your resume regularly, maintain contact with your network, and continue doing the best job possible to establish good references from your current employer. These are all important factors in planning for the worst, but I have a couple other ideas for what you can do when you have a strong inkling your job might be on the rocks. Find out what they are when you read more.
- Determining and honing your transferable skills is one way to prepare yourself for possible job loss. Start brainstorming how your current job responsibilities and established skills could transfer into another industry. Research job postings in other areas and observe the required skills for those positions. Performing this industry overview before you're scrambling to get another job will allow for a smoother job search process and you'll start out ahead of the game.
- Consider picking up a part-time weekend job, before your full-time paychecks stop coming. You'll be able to give your emergency fund a boost in preparation for a period without your usual salary, and will have the ability to pick up extra shifts when you need them. Losing your job is rarely free of panic, but knowing that you won't be totally burned in the short term has a temporary calming effect.

I am going through this now. I just want out of my current position so bad that it has started to affect my daily life; not good. I am stressed, not eating well, and a little depressed that I let it get so horrible.
1I'm sorry, cubadog.
2it's funny that you mention the part time job thing. the other night my fiance and i were at our usual bar getting sunday night drinks and i said that i should get a job there at night or on the weekends to make some extra money since we're there all the time. he laughed, but i have to say that if i could bring in even a little extra money i think that it's something to consider. i often think that maybe i should work at my gym, but i don't think that i have enough hours to offer them since it seems like there are folks that work a lot of hours a day..and i can't give that much.
3I have my regular job and my part time job. My part time job I only work twice a month (if that), but it is nice to have something in the works if anything should happen.
4I just applied to Anthropologie for a part-time job ... and they sent me a postcard rejection ...
so weird ... but at least now I won't be waiting around for a response and can now go submit applications at other stores.
5the most difficult thing is finding a part time job to suit your full time work hours. I commute alot and often by the time i get home, the bars close up in a few hours and dont want people just starting work. Cleaners jobs tend to be during the day - not alot of options out in the countryside!
6Going through this now as well. Trying to find a work/life balanced job (being a mom and all). 9-5 just doesn't cut it for many firms anymore..it sux. They are sucking the life out of us..
