Small or large, most of us have spending weaknesses — in fact, if you have none, I seriously commend you for your ability to resist temptation. I know which items make you weak in the knees and may drive you to splurge, but like our friend (I wish!) Warren Buffett says, we should keep an eye on the small expenses that can add up.
Do you have any small spending weaknesses, like always buying snacks on the go or buying items conveniently positioned at a store's counter when you're about to pay?

My weakness is buying lunch on works days, as opposed to bringing it from home. I've been getting a lot better with this, but I still have those days when I bring my lunch, but find myself picking something up instead. We have a great Thai restaurant nearby that's hard to resist. In fact, some of my coworkers went there today and invited me, but I said NO! I ate my turkey sandwich instead. Go me!
My major weakness is little drugstore makeup purchases, a cheap lipstick, eyeliner, or nail polish.
My weakness is buying lunch, too. Especially sushi. I've just gotten better at being happy with the more inexpensive stuff and staying away from big sashimi plates and fancy rolls.
Usually. Sometimes I splurge.
I have the same problem as psychobabble.
I buy tons of nail polishes and eyeliner
that I really don't need.
Candy. Whenever I go to a drugstore or past a vending machine I crave a bag of Skittles or an Almond Joy.
I dont...
When I am at my favorite dog store I always end up buying some random treat or toy for Cuba. When it comes to me I have learned to just say no. Since I am trying to be more healthful I have been really good at bringing my lunch and eating out 1 time a week. A lot of time the boss buy's so it is easier to justify.
lunch -- esp. because I have a runner to go get it for me so it doesn't really interrupt my day. it's not a small weakness though considering how much it adds up - ugh
My small weaknesses are coffee from dunkin donuts $2.11 or $3.00 daily if I get a donut. Also lunches but I do try to buy my lunches under $5.00 but I have been doing better by brining my lunch to work or cooking at night and bringing in left overs.
The biggest money accomplishment that I have is bringing my lunch to work almost every day, and I never go get coffee. I make up for these savings by buying the good stuff at the grocery store (that's where those little purchases stack up!), or spending that on event tickets/happy hours/other fun gatherings...
I use to have one--I have been curbing myself as of late so I can pay off things. It was skincare ---I was a product wh*re. It's been really hard to not buy these things, my last splurge was for my birthday last month.
As for lunch, I bring that everyday along with my breakfast and two snacks just in case I get the need to want to walk around and look.
I feel bad because I can't think of one...sure the budget's tight but, I see that I always put a want off for the kids' wants. Oh no, I'm a 'single mommy martyr'! Next payday I'm buying something just for ME!! even if it's just fresh flowers or upgrading my coffee brand!
Just a suggestion: Sonia ina... why don't you just make some Thai dish(food network recipe) on Thursday night and then take it on Friday as a end of the week treat. Then you don't feel that you're missing out.
**I make pancakes one night a week($2 to feed 4!!) to offset my Friday seafood dinner.
Pilates classes! Three classes a week add up to almost 200 EUR a month. A gym membership would be less than half of that, but I love pilates with studio equipment so much, I don't want to stop. I compensate a little by eating out less often and buying fewer clothes and cosmetics, but I still feel a little guilty spending this money.
My weakness is anything cute like shoes, a top, makeup, or accessories that was really nice, but suddenly is on sale. Love a great bargain. I have lately tried really hard to stay away so not to give in and shop.
Mesayme -- Thanks for the suggestion! I've actually done that before, but it's never truly the same. It tastes good, but I look over at the "real" Thai food and my mouth waters, ha! I'm going to stay strong though... maybe I'll limit myself to Thai once a month (the "real" kind, hehe)!
There's a smoothie shop a block away from my job and they go for $2.50 - $5.00. I've been spending $3.00 for a green tea smoothie almost everyday. I've tried making it at home and it just doesn't taste the same.
Oh, man. Jamba Juice used to be a huge daily weakness of mine.
On the plus side, a regular-sized Jamba is like a huge serving of soup, so I'd end up not eating lunch.
I know exactly what you're talking about oliveoyle...I can't resist a cheap t-shirt or a good bargain. But the $20 here and $30 there suddenly adds up at the end of the month!!! Yikes!
Cheap books from Half Price Books. There is a location in South Austin that has an awesome clearance section from $.25 to $1.00 and great $3.00 deals on every genre. I go almost everyday on my lunch break and always walk out with something.
i totally have a magazine addiction, and i can't seem to pass up the clearance items at target. the first place i go when i walk in that store are the clearance clothing racks lol.
I have a huge weakness for buying clothes on clearance that I DO NOT need. I trick myself into thinking it's a bargain, but only about 1 out of every 5 things I buy from the clearance rack are actually necessary. I'm also terrible with candy or snacks - when shopping by myself, I will almost always check out the food aisles and usually buy a snack or two.
It's not small but to me it is - eating out, even cheaply, as being "easier" than eating at home!! Also, coffee drinks are a weakness. They are few and far between but even then I can make myself coffee at home for $1.40 less as I only buy the $1.50 bottled frappucinos at Starbucks any way. Oh and water!! I'm forever buying water as soon as I leave the house from the local gas station instead of stocking up on cases of bottled water and ONLY taking it when I leave the house. Or filling up a water bottle would be even better!
I have a magazine addiction too! And almost every time I'm at the check-out line, I buy a 20oz diet coke.
Individual bottles of diet soda. I loooove the carbonation. They're somewhat pricey when they're purchased individually, but I can't resist, especially if they're ice cold.
guilty as charged...
I buy things on sale, i always have a budget but im terrible. If singlet tops are £1 I cant help but get one in each colour... Not so bad as its usually only £5 or so, but it does add up. Going shopping today for my birthday so expecting quite a few of these little purchases to add up!
I spend a lot on magazines too, and I keep buying candy and chocolate bars. I also tend to splurge a lot on Starbucks and lunches when I'm stressed out at work.
My biggest weakness is going out to eat or ordering out. I know I should just make food at home, but it is so much easier to have some one else make it!
I'm addicted to the Chocolate Chip Muffins at Dunkin Donuts. I also tend to horde every box of honey flavored Kellogg cereal bars at the supermarket when I find them. It always adds up.
my weakness is getting starbucks every day when i really don't need to buy coffee. my office has decent coffee machines that we can use, but yet everyday i stop at the starbucks in my office building for my green tea or coffee instead of saving the couple of dollars. i know that it's something that i could easily take out of the mix to save money but i just can't bring myself to do it.
Sugar-free Red Bull. I just can't resist the temptation. Luckily, 75% of the time, it's available in the office, since my boss is happy to keep us caffinated if we're putting in longer hours.
Magazines, I think ... but when I'm trying to save, I'll stick to online reading material and try to stop myself from grabbing some mags along with my groceries.
Things on sale for sure! Or, sometimes fast food
Yes, I have a shopping/buying weakness. Coffee every morning (although I cut down to Americanos), stationary, candy, thrift clothes...etc. The list goes on. I'm working on it though...to save my marriage and my credit!
I love hand bags. A few days ago I looked in my closet and I was astonished on how many I actually owned.
I am a makeup junkie. Right now, I need to stop buying so many makeup brushes!
