Fifty-four percent of you are carrying a credit card balance, and many of you currently not carrying credit card debt may have been in the red at some point. What pushed you in to debt: Was it a shopping habit, paying bills when you didn't have a job, parking tickets, furniture, or a combination of other things?

For me it was mostly credit card debt!!! Thank heavens I only have one card left to pay off after that's done I'm paying off my car loan.
1I have a bit of cedit card debt and it was from moving out
2school loans and a credit card for the wrongs reasons. I know the school loans are "ok" just because I will have forever to pay those off but it doesn't make it any less painful each month. the credit card doesn't help ):
3groceries and car insurance, etc., in grad school
4college expenses while I was only working 20 hours a week!
5I'm not in debt yet. *crosses fingers* My parents pay everything for me and if I do need to charge soemthing I use my boyfriend's CC. (That sounds bad I know...)
6College, car, and then a house. I don't really use credit cards too much, but we have them for emergencies. I don't consider myself too far in debt though...
7you use your boyfriend's credit card? that's pretty bad.
i am only in debt from university but am whittling away at it.
8Mine is a combination of not being able to resist new clothes and leftover debt from after I graduated from college and couldn't find a decent job for about a year and a half.
9I use my credit card too often to bail myself out of situations (plane tickets, gas, etc) when I don't want to use my debit card. BAD idea though- a couple hundred dollar purchases really add up!!
10How about 7 different cards, a Dell computer and student loans? I had a "hand;e" on my debt until my senior year when I was fired from 2 jobs and chose to remain unemployed and focus on school. What ended up happening was I fell into a depression, wasted loan money on eBay and nearly didn't graduate. Nearly 3 years later I have one closed credit card to pay off, my student loans and the Dell bill. By January '09 I will only have to pay off Dell and I intend to settle with them. I pay a little more than my minimum on the student loans but plan to contribute more once Dell is done.
11For my part it was student loans
12For the credit card part it was family using my personal info to score credit.
I forgot to add medical bills.
13DH did it before we got married. It's mostly "good debt" student loans, house and truck payment with some credit card debt thrown in. Student loans are at a good interest rate but still suck to pay off. He bought the house and truck before we were married and with a $400 truck payment and huge insurance payment plus $1000 mortgage + utilities to pay each month he probably should of gotten one or the other but not both. The house is really in a great area and a great house and price for the area we're in but he went for as much house as he could get and if I had been in the picture at the time I would of tried finding something nice still but not as expensive. I think just cause the bank will give you x amount doesn't mean you need to spend that much.
If we can sell the truck we would save A TON especially because its $75+ to fill the tank with gas prices but of course, with gas prices, people aren't really looking for trucks. Ughhhh!
14Tuition and other school costs.
I'm pretty good with my money. I don't spend money I don't have.
15Living like a big firm lawyer while I was still in law school...and then doing a 2 year low-paying clerkship after I graduated instead of going to a big firm. A shopping addiction doesn't help. And then of course the $100K in student loans on top of the credit card bills.
16Once I bought my house, there were all kinds of improvements that I just "HAD" to do when I couldn't really afford them. Bad move. Now I'm paying for it. Credit card debt and a mortgage? No bueno.
17Student loan debt - but really I feel this debt is worth it and I consider it just another bill I pay every month like my cell phone or rent. The credit card debt that my husband and I have is from buying necessary plane tickets and travel expenses from right after college. We are no longer using our credit card and are slowly working at paying it off.
18o i went to europe and shopped, drank, and ate my way through london, paris, and belgium. yea that'll do it
19For me, I would say plain ignorance got me into debt. I was really young when I started charging to my credit cards and I wasn't completely aware of how a credit card worked! I really can't remember how I used to think back then but I thought that earning poinds and rewards was actually a GOOD thing! Way too naive from me. I'm trying to look into the positive and think that, since I got into credit card debt so young, I probably won't be when I'm older and I'll able to enjoy a debt-free life once I'm older 'cause I made the mistake in my younger years and I learned from it.
20Things that I need! I never shop with a credit card. My debt is mostly tuition costs, new tires I needed for my car, when I moved I needed a washer and dryer. Its almost paid off now so YAY!!
21for me it is a combo of school loans and credit cards. I was really lucky and stupid in undergrad. My parents paid for my tuition and rent, but I lied (I know! i suck!) and rented an apartment with friends that was way outside my budget. I worked all through my last year in undergrad to pay for the apartment, and my parents thought I was working to pay for food and living expenses. So out comes the credit card... to pay for what I should have already been covered under. Now that I am in law school, paying my own way, that credit card debt is really really annoying.
Also, I have an unhealthy addiction to shoes and eating in restaurants.
Hopefully the credit card debt will go away by the end of next year!
22spending 15k to 18k a year on flights for my stepson to come over here from France has put us in debt and pretty much solidified our membership.
23eatting out and buying a car. Not to mention my car insurance is sky high. At this rate I may never move out of my mothers house.

25student loans and we had to get a new roof when I wasn't working. Roofs are expensive! It was $6,000 more then we could afford, so we had to put it on the CC, it was that or have a leaky roof....
26I wouldn't brag about not being in debt if my parents and boyfriend are bailing you out. That is a little embarrassing. I am in debt from being unemployed and not wanting to ask my parents for money. I am slowly paying it off myself and that is the way it should be. I went through bankruptcy when I was unemployed and it is a horrible feeling. I filed on my birthday 4 years ago it was awful, the lady actually wished me a happy birthday!

28I had a little debt coming out of college that was just me being stupid - now it's gone
29i have a credit card, student loans, and my car. the main thing on my credit card is gas, but lately i've had to put groceries and things like that on it because of graduating and no job yet
can't wait until i can start paying more than the minimum on it!
30braces!
I know that's a totally random thing.. I know I could have saved up for a year or two and then paid them off, but I wanted them ASAP because I figured the sooner I got them on (it's been 4 months), the sooner they'll come off (next summer).
I also bought a computer. It's paid off now, but it definitely limited payments to my orthodontics.. making both of those big purchases at the same time was probably unwise..
31i got into debt initially when i was in college and i got my first cards and could spend even if i didn't have money.
then once i got out of that debt, i was living in NYC making no money and when you need to eat - and you don't have cash - you start to charge food. i'm not talking about nice dinners - i'm talking about just going to the food store and getting cheap things. it adds up.
32I'm in debt from not making enough money! Seriously, I use my credit card for anything that costs more than $200 and isn't part of my normal monthly budget, like vet visits, dead tree removals, car repairs, and it adds up.
33I blame a bad boyfriend! I was fresh out of college and didn't have a job yet and he lived in the city and had a nice full time job. I often drove 2 hours to visit him (gas money) because "there was nothing to do" where I lived, and had my car towed twice because he told me it was ok to park somewhere (and he was wrong $$$). He also never had any food at his place and we constantly had to eat out. He often chose expensive restaurants and we almost always went dutch and he acted a bit put out when I asked him to cover me a couple of times. Luckily we broke up after only a few months and I transferred the balance to a 0% interest card until I could pay it off.
Now it's just the student loans
34well after two years at my first (out of school) place of employment, I took a different position that paid well but did not include commission pay which I was accustomed to so within a year most of a credit cards where at their max and I had a disposable income that I refused to deal with so before I knew it I was falling further and further behind...
35Luckily, I have been able to pay off most of the CC's now and learned a lot about finances, credit scores and life with and without money over the years
Pretty much 100% student loans. College is not cheap!
And soon I'll also have a car loan...Yeah, not the best plan, but I've got a long term plan for paying everything off...start with the highest interest rate debt and work my way through it!
36I paid off all my debt! Student loan and car. Best feeling ever!
37I got into debt paying for my wedding. But it's almost paid off!
38I got a loan I couldnt afford to pay for day to day expenses and my car... which I then spent more on to build into my race car, then I built a car club and spent $1000 a month on it, im still paying it off. Although without that loan, I wouldnt have been able to pay rent or eat alot of the time, I was in a bad place.
You make mistakes, you learn.
39Mostly school, and having to move to another city for a job but can't start the job until a few months later cause of work permit problems.
I still have a lot to learn on managing money!!
40grad school. besides the regular student loans, i only got my credit card to pay for books, then it went from there. i try to only use it for automatic billing on Comcast and my gym membership but with money so tight i find myself using it more and more on necessities.

42Student loans, plus some credit card debt due to travel. I let relatives guilt-trip me into attending a wedding overseas, and I had to put the flight, dress and gift on the credit card. Other expenses were caused by a long distance relationship. I usually went to see him (expensive train tickets), and the stingy f*cker never once paid for my meal when we went out. I actually had to cover for him a couple of times when he "forgot to take out cash". The relationship is over, but I'm still paying
.
But I've learned my lesson and won't be such a pushover in the future.
43I decided to go back to school as soon as I got out of debt, which slide me back into the red worse than I've ever been before. I now have 2 jobs again, like I did befpre I got my four year.
44Student Loans. My parents paid for my college, but my husband wasn't so lucky. We'll be paying off his student loans until the day we die, unless we win the lottery. HA!
45$3000 for a wedding, $2000 in medical bills, student loans from undergrad and grad school, and living expenses while I wasn't working for three months after my surgery. We're slowly edging our way from under the crushing debt but it's definatly a slooooow process.
46The majority of my debt came from credit cards that I used to pay my tuition freshman year and old hospital bills. I have some student loan debt, but that's okay and I have a car payment. If I could just get rid of the very old things, I would be okay. But it's hard to pay my current bills as it is...
47I married into a moderate amount of debt, but within our first year of marriage (not quite there yet!) we managed to pay if off by budgeting aggressively and holding each other accountable. You need to ask these questions before you tie the knot, seriously - their debt becomes your debt the moment you say "I do" - I'm thankful ours was manageable!
48sorry no picture right now...anyway, i am in credit card debt right now because I moved back to my hometown without a job in place and used credit to live on. now i have finally found a job and will have to contact a debt consolidation company to settle this debt because there is NO WAY i can catch up on the payments. i will try to settle independently and keep one card for emergencies.
