TransUnion's class action case was settled at the beginning of Summer, and now that the season has come and gone, your chance to get free credit monitoring services is almost up, too. The settlement's terms include most consumers — if you had any open lines of credit (including credit cards and loans) from Jan. 1, 1987, until May 28, 2008, you are eligible to receive free 24-hour credit monitoring from TransUnion for either six or nine months.

You have until Sept. 24 to register for TransUnion's Basic or Enhanced service. For more information or to file a claim, visit the settlement's website or call 866-416-3470.

i guess this is a good thing, since everyone should keep tabs on at least one of the reporting unions credit scores but you should take the information with a grain of salt based on the posts this week since we know that not all reporting services are as accurate as we had hoped. i think that 's really important to know what at least one of your scores is though, so if you haven't signed up - you really should and if it's free - then that's even better. i subscribe to a service that gives me updates each month on three reporting places....but if i didn't have it then i would definitely sign up.
1Good point ilanac! I definitely went on the website and signed up. I've found many inaccuracies w/my credit reports and I'd be a fool not to participate in the suit.

3Thanks for the heads-up! I'd received a letter about this several months ago, but hadn't really paid attention to it. Thanks to your reminder, though, I signed up just now! Yay, free credit monitoring and chance of money!
4Thanks for the information Savvy, I went to the site and signed up.
5I signed up but it didn't give me a timeline of when the service would first be available. Too bad - husband and I are checking our credit reports in preparation for a mortage application and we could have used the extra service!
6I hate doing stuff like this. I never realize that it's legit until it's too late.
7I signed up - and encountered the same question as valancyjane - WHEN do we get this free service?
8Nice post. Thanks for sharing it
