Just for fun, let's pretend your boss approaches you out of the blue and offers you eight weeks' severance including medical benefits. If you don't accept the offer, you keep your job, and if you accept, you'll be jobless in eight weeks and back on the market.
What would you do — take the money and run or keep your job?

Severance! I would almost kill for that offer right now!
I'd keep my job - no contest! I wouldn't be able to find another great job like this one!
My job thanks. Its so hard to get into telecommunications where I am, and with the type of company. I'm so so so lucky to have my position and wouldnt swap it for anything!
I'd take the money. It would force me to find a new job.
Severance. That would be a good situation for me, as I would like to get out of this job without burning bridges.
I like my job, so I'd just choose the job.
oh, I would take that money and run...and use it to help fund the catering company I want to start, but keep being held back from by the security of my full-time job with great benefits
i would take the moo-lah definatly and move out! haha...there's plenty of jobs out there I could get
I'd keep my job (even though I want to leave) - jobs aren't easy to find so as nice as a vaca would be there is no guarantee I'd find another employ after it was over :-\
Severance! It would help light a fire under me to get out of here and look for something that will challenge/satisfy/fulfill me!
I would take the money, and get a parttime job to bolster that while I looked for a new job.
I would take the money, and get a parttime job to bolster that while I looked for a new job.
I would take the money, and get a parttime job to bolster that while I looked for a new job.
make it 12 weeks and you got a deal
I would absolutely keep my job. 2 months is not enough time to find another, especially in a rocky market like this one!! People tend to underestimate how long it'll take them to bounce back... and don't realize the truth until unemployment happens to them. This has happened to plenty of my friends!
Severance for sure!
Severance in half a heart beat!
I would totally take the severence. I have been trying to come up with a plan to quit my job and do some work from home and this would be the perfect opportunity.
I would keep my job. I am having a hard time finding a pt job now and I know 8 months ago it was deadlock on finding a ft job.
At my last job, I'd have taken the severance no question. But I like my job now, so I'd stick around.
Severance with out a doubt! This would force me to look for another job.
My current job blowssssss!
In this day and age--I would definitely keep my job. I also don't like to NOT work. I like to have a balance of work and relaxation. I couldn't see myself staying at home and having to search for another job, too.
I would try and negotiate for a longer term foe either the pay and/or the medical benefits. If they said no, take it or leave it, I would take the money and temporary benefits and borrow money to have some medical work done since I have to spend my Flex Account. Though the job market varies from city to city, Atlanta has a lot of open jobs and if push came to shove I could work for a temp agency and get the time to find what i really want to do.
I'd take the money! I've been feeling restless at my job anyway. Time for something new.
How can I convince him to make me that offer?
Severance probably. My military-morale is at an all time low lately and I can't help but wonder how much happier I'd be if I were civilian again.
I would take the money and move.
I have a new job and I love it so far! I would keep my job definitely.
I would take severance if I had another job lined up or if I was confident that I could find a new job within the eight weeks. Otherwise, I'd stay in my current job.
keep my job! I love my job!
Take the money and run!
NO WAY! I LOOOVE my job!
XD
you know, i think that i would seriously consider taking it. it's hard since i like my job, but i think that at least im' in a market that i could find something else and not be without a job for too long. it's such a double edged sword to think about either taking the offer and leaving or staying and being un-certain if there will be future layoffs etc.
I'd take the money.
oh god, no. it's horrible looking for a job right now.
I would stay at my job. I'd have to win the mega lottery in order to pry me away from a stable job right now.
I would take the money and run! It would give me the kick in the ass that I need to find a new job.
I hate my job though!
Regardless of the economic times, I'd keep my job...but ESPECIALLY because of the economic times, I'd keep my job!
I'd keep my local government job. When cities or counties fire people, they tend to be the employees who have been there the shortest amount of time, regardless of how valuable of an employee you are. It's in my best interest to stay with the same employer as long as possible. And there are practically no jobs available in my field in the private sector right now, so gov't jobs are the only option.
Government employers aside, I don't think I've ever worked for anyone who offered severance packages. Unless the box that they hand you to throw your stuff in before they kick you out the door counts.
Oohhh that would be really tempting. Two months is a pretty decent amount of time to look for another job!
I would take the severance and run!
