Forty percent of you take the bus or train to work, and almost just as many of you drive to work alone. Hopefully those of you driving leave the email-checking and book reading for another time, but I'm wondering how you usually occupy yourself during your commute, no matter your mode of transit.

I drive, so it's hard to do much. I just listen to music
I drive too so I listen to music.
My commute is a short walk so I usually catch 2-3 songs on my iPod and that's it.
Sometimes at lights if it's really congested I might put on some make-up (I usually don't wear make-up to work) just to kill some time and boredom.
I take the underground, and I read.
I drive or get driven, so when I drive I listen to music full blast or talk on the phone, it makes the drive go by so much faster. If Im passenger its usually listening to music thats not my taste.
When I drive I just listen to the radio. When I take the subway I listen music to the MP3 or read a book.
I'm in a new city at a new job and I can finally take public transit to work (bus and metro). I've been reading books, magazines and newspapers. It's amazing being able to finally read those 10-page articles in the New Yorker in one sitting!
Listening to my ipod, sleeping, and reading magazines
i read the free newspapers they give out, and if the opportunity strikes, i'll use the time to talk on the phone
Book, mag, or music. I enjoy my 45 min. commute because it gives me a chance to zone out and have "me" time - meaning I get to reflect and think about goals I have for the day ahead or when I'm on my way home, reflect about the day and what I have/have not achieved.
Listening to music, or reading a magazine.
I love listening to music on the way to work. Thank God for my iPod, because I'd go crazy listening to those stupid morning talk shows.
I get to read - what would I do without the CTA, it gives me so much time to do things I want to do.
i totally zone out on public transit with my ipod. thank God for apple!
i watch tv shows on my ipod. i have like a 90 minute commute, and that really helps me take my mind off of it.
I sometimes do my make-up, sometimes read the free newspapers, and sometimes read a book. Sometimes I zone out, too. Oh, and sometimes I play games on my phone.
Although, I do feel the need for this little rant:
I HATE when people have long phone conversations or listen to music so loudly that I can hear what song they are listening to while on the metro. It's just rude!
It actually depends on my mood. I either read the paper, play Sudoku on my phone, listen to music, or pass out.
Morning Radio!
I drive, so all I can really do is listen to the radio and mock the other drivers.
I always read- book usually and sometimes magazines. I get SO much reading done on the subway.
I drive, so I listen to music from my Ipod or I listen to the radio (especially The Woody Show, its on 105.3 FM in the Bay Area).
In my weeee early 20's I would listen to radio talk ..and talk about the internet during music breaks... and do my make-up in the car. And I would try to catch my morning horoscope on the radio.. then I would put in a Cd.
right now my commute is basically just the subway - so i listen to music - but when i used to have a longer commute and took the bus, i would always take a book with me and read.
I drive so just the radio for me.
I drive, and usually listen to the news on NPR (National Public Radio).
NPR
I drive and then take the train. I always pop my ipod in and sometimes look through a magazine, or just zone out
All of the above - I take either the bus or the train, and either way it's at least 70 minutes one day, so I have lots of time to read, listen to music, sleep, stare into space, make a grocery list, etc.
