Some consider dedicating yourself as a full-time college student a full-time job in itself, but going to school and living away from home is expensive and might require the income of at least a part-time job.
I worked throughout my four years, earning money working on-campus and waitressing off-campus. Did you work during college?

ummm well I work full time and do school part time. Yea. it's tough but I need money!
I don't think that going to school full-time dismisses you from not working.
Yes, I worked a job during the week and I had a weekend one as well.
Yup I have a full-time job right now but I will be going down to part-time when I start school full-time in 2 weeks.
No, I didn't work during college. My parents made it clear they would rather I focus on my education than stress about an outside job. There were times when I definitely could have handled it, but towards the end as classes and school work were more intense, there is no way I could have done it without having a serious nervous breakdown.
definitely. i was a private tutor and i worked part-time as an admin asst.
Heck, I wish I had the luxury of having my parents pay for my schooling and support me. I work full-time and go to school full-time. Anyone can do it, you just need to have your priorities in order. Going to school full-time is no reason why you shouldn't work.
I was the world's best backward walker - aka tour guide. Two 1-hr tours a week was enough for beer and food on the weekends!
I worked 4 jobs (yes, simultaneously) during college, and I'm still in debt from it.
Ditto, kayepants...I've paid off undergrad and just have some grad school loans left. I worked 50+ hours a week, more during summers. C'est la vie.
I did work-study all through college, as part of my financial aid package. I also worked full time each summer, including well paying internships my last two summers. That money really made a difference, since the work study didn't pay that well. Unfortunately, getting paid well also ate away at my financial aid package, so I had to make sure to save the money for the school year. So if you do work, make sure you take into account how it will hit your financial aid package when managing your money.
I had 20+ hour/week unpaid internships. Does that count? I put in the hours on top of 18 hours of hard credits (I double majored and double minored in the hard sciences/math -- no fluff classes for me), but I never got paid for working. I knew to go straight from undergrad into a Ph.D. program, I'd need significant research, so spending the hours in the lab at NIH was more important to me than holding a menial job to bring in actual money. I may have been completely poor, but I know I made the right decision -- I was the only person accepted into my Ph.D. program my year without a masters' degree or several years of experience working as a lab technician.
i work part time waitressing while pursuing my chemical engineering degree, but im taking out two semesters to co-op, when ill be making legit money to pay for school
I have held a job since the week I turned 16 (minimum age to work in GA at the time). In college, I consistently had 2 jobs while in school after my first semester working for next to nothing monimum-wage as a student worker on campus. One year, for 30 seconds, i worked 3 paying jobs, got fired and stuck to my 2 job formula. I was also super involved with a student organization on the exec board and everything. I wasn't a success story and ended up having a crappy Senior year, getting fired or layed off from every job and graduating with a not so stellar GPA and 7 maxed out credit cards, but I have my degree and my parents and FAFSA couldn't help me pay my bills at all! Nearly 3 years out and my credit is much better and I am this close to paying off those 7 cards which totaled $8k and I now owe less than $3K with 2 creditors! College was fun!
i hear you, kayepants. i worked three jobs at once, and am still about $48k under!
Student Loans - what can I say. I don't hate them, they helped me get where I am. Sometimes I wish, I could have those payments in an account - the things I could I do.
Yup. I worked three jobs at a time but still graduated with $19k in loans. They'll be paid off in less than two years, thank goodness.
Yep, I have worked since high school.
god no. i only worked in the summers and 2 weeks every Xmas.
i claimed i didnt' have the time, which was bull considering how much time i spent watching TV, doing nothing, and drinking during undergrad. but my parents never made me have a job.
and then during my master's i had a research job for a bit, which fed into my thesis, and otherwise nothing. but i was legitimately crazy busy during those 2 years.
Yup, I worked at a hotel. It was great. I either got up really early in the morning and went to work and had time for afternoon classes, or a went to class and then work in the evening.
I preferred morning shifts though, so that I still had the day ahead of me but after doing that for 5 years, I can hardly pull myself out of bed anymore!
undergrad nope- only in the summers. never during the shcool year. i was lucky. grad school i work full time and go to school part time!
Yes, sometimes I worked more than I went to school. I had to have a job to pay for school books and supplies. My mother could only offer me a place to live.
Yes, sometimes I worked more than I went to school. I had to have a job to pay for school books and supplies. My mother could only offer me a place to live.
I always had a part time job while in school, usually on campus, except for my senior year. My classes were really hard and they were only offering me the worst hours (late nights), so I had to say no even though I wanted to work. I, of course, still left with 20k in student loans, but it could have been worse.
yup I worked some student jobs on campus during the year and full time during the summer at various establishments...Rite Aid and Modell's did help me get thru college! lol..but student jobs on campus helped me to network and gain great experience..now i work full time at the university
Yes, I worked my bum off at a nearby golf course, waiting tables in between classes and helping with weddings and other events on the weekends, often working until 2 a.m. and then having to be in class early the next morning. I'm glad that I did so rather than taking out student loans, though. The temporary hardship was worth it in the long run.
My dad is taking care of my tuition (which isn't that much due to scholarships and loans) and my bills and rent, but I pay for my dog's care (expensive!) and food and "other" things. I have a job that is only 10-15 hours a week, but it works for me.
o but i still owe so much in student loans
o but i still owe so much in student loans
I taught biology undergraduates for two years when I was junior and senior in college. I also did some unpaid research for an honors thesis and had a paid fellowship in another lab.
yes I worked in cafes as I needed the free caffeine...LOL!
I worked part time when I was in college full-time. I actually stayed with the same employer when I graduated.
Yes, I worked all four years in a work-study program in the Administration building of my school.
I am a full-time student right now, and I work a part time job at Capezio. This is my 3rd year, and my first time working AND studying at the same time. I don't know yet if I can handle it...but I feel better hearing that a lot of you did it. So can I! I don't really NEED the money, just the experience. I want to be able to say that I worked at one place for longer than just 3 months (a summer).
School full-time and work part-time (up to 30 hrs a week) during undergrad. I'm starting my master's now, so it'll be work full-time and school part-time for the next two years.
Yep. I don't know many people that have a choice -- most I know hold down a job while going to school.
I served tables the first two years, but now the university pays me (I work in a lab and teach first & second year chem labs). It's much easier having a campus job and cutting out all that travelling time!
I worked part-time in college starting my second year. I worked in student affairs and then my senior year, I picked up a second part-time job in a media lab. In grad school, I tutored and also worked as a TA and grader my second year. Kept me busy.
I'm in college right now and I don't have a job. I would like to get a job, but college takes up so much of my time. I only go to school from Monday-Thursdays, but I also have tons of homework & papers to do in addition to my other committments (baby-sitting, etc.). I applaud all of you can go to college and have a job at the same time, because I don't think I could do it. I will get a job eventually but it's too stressful right now.
I did because I had to but I think it's great when people don't have to work during college. That being said I think parents should only cover necessities. I had too many friends with too much extra spending money from their parents and it just led to excessive partying.
I was a Resident Assistant at a girls dorm which worked out great because I had room & board + a little salary. The worst times were being called in the middle of the night to take care of the drunk, heartbroken or cat-fighting girls, but most the time it was great. I was lucky that my parents paid for tuition, as long as I finished my degree in 4 years. That was a great motivator!
Absolutely! I worked in my college gym. I can't imagine not having a job while being in school. I had bills to pay.
I had a work-study position at the school library as an undergrad and a research assistantship in graduate school. However, 20 hours a week of minimum wage doesn't quite pay the rent.
Yup. I worked full time during college and now I work two full time jobs. Hopefully not for that much longer!
I've worked part time during school ever since I was 14 all the way through law school. Grocery store, furniture store, fabric store, tutor, hostess, camp counselor, bartender, you name it. It was absolutely necessary but I still have an astronomical amount of student loans.
Yes, I did. It was good thing. It kept me out of trouble.
College seems like such an American thing to me... I didnt go neither did my partner but we both have good jobs and have worked our way up in our careers.
That being said, I've been working since 14... was kicked out with nothing at 17, didnt have the money to go to college, nor eat or house myself!. I am enrolled now (on a gap year) and will be hopefully continuing alongside my full time job as of next year
Yes - but not for tuition's sake but for my spending money! I was a campus tour guide for three years and an admissions interviewer during my senior year, so I interviewed prospective students after they applied. I loved both jobs.
Yuppers...I worked a pharmacy technician throughout college and for a year beyond.

i did work full time while i was in college. it was kind of upsetting to be at first since my father had told my brothers that they were to focus on school and not work so he gave them money and then when it came to me, i didn't get that luxury so i had to work to pay for both school (which they didn't have to do) and to have spending money. it's just a sign of the times i guess and the fact that after a certain point i was going to school and living in NYC and that's not necessarily the same as my brothers.
i worked in retail stores the entire time since that was the best place for me to make $$ (i was on commission in a few larger designer dept stores and boutiques) and that also meant that i could shop at a discount which was key.
i held 2 part time jobs all four years
