Stress often leads to poor money decisions that can create even more stressful situations than we had before. Using retail therapy to soothe our bad day or bad luck can instigate a downward spending spiral, but The Wall Street Journal has some pointers for keeping us above water when the itch to spend can't be scratched.
- Ask yourself why you have the urge to spend money and focus on solving those problems first.
- Avoid the rationalization that overspending for work attire is necessary. Digging yourself in to debt will create bigger problems later, so figure out what you can realistically afford and go shopping for the best deal.
- Plan for your bigger purchases by saving a certain amount each week until you have enough.
- Scale down pick-me-ups by going for smaller, more inexpensive purchases or skip the shopping and grab coffee with friends.
- Keep track of your day-to-day finances to establish a sense of control, and planning for purchases will become a more natural habit.

when I am down, nothing makes me feel better like shopping! sad but true!
I just have to use LOTS of willpower not to step foot in a mall. I think it's been 2 months since I last did!
1I find that window shopping and even trying on extravegant items is almost as satisfying as taking them home - because I know those fabulous shoes do NOT trump my mortgage payment.
2I'm all about spending sensibly, and keeping in check whether one is spending to replace a human hug, or buying a new suit for the upcoming wedding (and making ex realize what she's missing). I know it is a big grey zone.
But looking good and feeling good makes good things happen. Going to an interview with inferior clothes and poorly tailored attire is bad. The same rules apply when going on a date, after hours hunting, networking, socializing, partying, etc.
3I'm totally not agreement with "go have coffee with girlfriends instead". Going shopping in a bad mood, I actully have something to show for it. That $5 I spent on coffee will be gone in 5-10 minutes.
4My plan has always been to put a bit away on a gift card and when i get to the magic # I can buy the item. If it's still, there bonus! If not, get something you need or keep saving! I'm still working this plan, but it's a good plan!
My other tip: Learn how to walk the store! If you get a fix from a new top or a new skirt, pick it up, try it on...take it for a spin in your cart or your hands while you peruse the rest of the store. If you still feel the need for the item...drop it and run!
5Good point, Monday, lol. Sometimes those fabulous shoes ARE worth it...maybe if they're on sale
6The best way to watch yourself is to leave the credit cards at home and only take the amount of cash you can afford to spend.
7I bought a new Coach purse from an outlet store. I still spent a pretty penny on it, so I did kinda regret it after purchasing it. Not enough to return it though.
I'll just have to watch my spending for the next month or so...
8i think that if you're able to get to that rational place before you shop then you can use these tips - but i know that for myself, sometimes i just can't get there and the spiral continues. i have to say though that it's been a long time since i've impulse shopped based on my mood or whatever. lately the way that i deal with things is working out and going to the gym which in itself is a better choice since i'm paying for my membership on a monthly basis - so this way i'm able to reduce my 'per visit' cost
9lately I have been getting just necessities. I have created a list of clothing items that I do need and will purchase the items with coupons only. I bought two dresses last week for $18 each and after the purchase I was sent an email for $10 off my purchase so I returned the dresses and re-purchased them. The dresses were now $13 each. I did put the dresses on hold to think about them and also the fact that my size sells out so fast.
10I really get a huge buzz from buying the just right thing. I was shopping for something to wear to my reunion and found the perfect dress and at the same store I found an adorable top and wrap around sweater in my favorite color. So that day, I spent more than planned, but I looked great at my reunion and I love the new sweater set. I've worn it multiple times since I've bought it and my mom even wants to borrow it when she goes on vacation.
On the other hand, my boyfriend talked me out of buying a new video game and I was bummed at the time, but felt great the next day after some reflection.
