My trip to Safeway in San Francisco this weekend showed me that even grocery stores get in on classic Labor Day sales. I got some great deals on everything from cleaning products to snacks, but some items haven't been on sale all Summer and the holiday was no exception.

3Food in San Fran is so much more expensive than in NC! These quizzes are really hard for us who don't live in San Fran/NYC. It's amazing how much web content in general is created in those two places. I guess they are our "cultural capitals" now!
4jspeed- The quizzes are just for fun, and for those living outside the area to get an idea of how prices vary from place to place. Also, for people who do live in the area, it can be a reality check to see if they've been paying attention to grocery prices.
5I don't know. I don't think it's that the stuff costs that much more. I think the odder thing is that the correct quiz answer is the retail price, which I think very few of us end up paying.
It often seems to me that the retail price is jacked up to make the sale price seem like that much more of a discount. For example, the retail price of a 12-pack of Diet Coke with Lime at my local Dominick's (Safeway) is $5.69, yet I've never paid more than $3 for it, and I buy at least a couple 12-packs a week. (Often, they do a buy 2 at retail get 3 free or similar, which is the only reason I know the retail price for that item so well!) The retail price for cereals range from $5 to $8, but I just aim for the brands that are "on sale" for $2.50 or less...and there's always one of the ones I like that is in that price range.

7The Safeway owned store by my house is the biggest dump. I never shop there. The employees are completely disgruntled and they are waaaay overpriced.
8Wow. Items in my sh*tty small town in Arizona are as much or more expensive than they are in San Francisco. That's... amazing.
At least milk was on sale this week. I got a gallon for $1.88, and it doesn't expire for two and a half weeks. I'm pretty excited about that. I usually buy quarts, but since a quart was $1.29, and a gallon was $1.88, I couldn't pass it up.
9Hmm, I didn't do very well...and Safeway is my usual store, too! They've raised a lot of their prices lately, motivating me to check sales at both Safeway and BelAir (which are conveniently across the street from each other) and shop at both in one trip.
10I did so bad! But I did know about the cost of Special K- it's a super expensive cereal but so yummy and good for you!
