Is it difficult to actually make good money as a chef?

i think that it also depends on the market that you're in. in places like NYC where i am or Miami - where i was - being an event planner - well it's like everyone is doing that - so there's less of a demand for people who want those jobs - they're over flowing with people who want them. i think that there is a market for a few of those though- and if it's something that you're passionate about - then go for it. if i could be a chef or a trainer - i would do that!

My brother's friend is a pastry chef at a hotel in Downtown NYC. His salary is OK but he makes much more outside the job catering weddings and other parties.

I'm surprised at "Schoolteacher", 'cause I keep hearing about how hard it is to get hired at a school. But maybe more people are quitting now because it's getting to be a dangerous job.

Not surprised at "Geriatric nurse". But it's one of those jobs few people actually aspire to. One of those jobs that are difficult, dirty, and unglamorous all rolled into one.

My major is advertising and I graduate in 2 years...so let's hope this list is true!

I was a personal trainer before I went back to university, and I wouldn't recommend it..

why is nurse there and not doctor?

teacher depends on the grade level and subjects taught. for example, i got hired as a teacher before i even finished my credential (worked as an intern for 1/2 a year) because i teach math. but i know people who got their credential in multiple subjects (meaning elementary school teachers), and they don't have jobs for next year yet. same with history/social studies and, to a point, english.

i'm SO glad i picked math, though. i will never be without a job!

Accountants ALWAYS make good money and are in demand. Its crazy. Over here in the UK, i would say 80% of jobs advertised in my area are for accountants, and all at least double what I get paid being a project analyst. The same is true in AU, and this has been the same way for a few years now.

I would not want to do ANY of these jobs.

you'd be surprised how many people aspire to be nurses even though it can be a "difficult, dirty and unglamorous" job. nursing school admissions are TOUGH. in my city three community colleges have a 3-4 year wait lists to get into their nursing programs and the big universities here get thousands of applications for 50 or 60 spots.

You can make pretty good money as an executive chef, or even as a sous chef... especially at a restaurant in a city like NYC or San Fran.

Choosing from those I would like to be a personal trainer or chef.

I notice a good number of jobs in that list with good freelance potential. Nice!

I don't think the list should have limited the nursing profession to simply "geriatric nurses." It's true that as the nation ages we will require more and more nurses who care specifically for the baby boomers who are entering their elderly years. However, there is an overall shortage of nurses in general and there will continue to be that shortage for many years. Therefore, all types of nurses will be in demand in the years to come. In reference to the comment about nursing school waitlists, it may be that application numbers are up but the real problem is the lack of nursing educators.

And yes, nursing is more often than not difficult, dirty and unglamorous. It does have its rewarding moments, though...
