In her New York Times column "A Conflict That Came in the Mail," writer M.P. Dunleavey divulges a recent incident with her husband. She thought their financial communication was healthy until she made a small discovery: "My happy little financial harmony bubble went pop the other day, however, when my husband acknowledged that for the last couple of months, when he picked up our mail, he had been chucking all my catalogs in the trash."
Her husband looked at catalogs as unnecessary evils and attempted to remove temptation. In the end, however, Dunleavey got her way and started getting her catalogs again.

This seems like part of a bigger issue. Is her spending out of control? Maybe he should talk to her first before throwing her stuff away without her knowing.
1If she has a spending problem maybe he realized the the catalogs were part of the problem. But I think he should've asked her first if the catalogs were necessary and if not she should unsubscribe.
2Catalogs? Srsly? Hello, internet.
3Nope, I trash my own catalogs anyway. I don't know how I wind up on so many mailing lists, but I can't remember the last time I actually looked through a catalog and didn't just stick it right in the trash...
And yes, I have called to unsubscribe from all of them. A fat lot of good it has done.
4I don't do catalogs.
5i would thank him for trashing them, so i wouldn't have to do it myself. those suckers pile up so quickly... poor trees.
6Sidenote: I love reading M.P. Dunleavey and her Women in Red.
7Personally, I love flipping through catalogs... I think I go to the mall less b/c I see whats out there from flipping through the catalogs... I don't ever buy things from the catalog, but I like paging through them...
So, yes, I get irritated when I find one in the trash!
8Oh geez, I can't show this piece to my husband ... not because I order too much from catalogs (I just look at them and put them in the basket) but because he is such a minimalist and he hates that I keep catalogs around.
9My husband would never trash my catalogs.
10usually i get the catalogs for my entertainment, i always browse thru them, never order. i'd be upset a bit, its my reading material he's chucking!
11Yes. But it's not really about the catalogs, its about trying to control someone else. Plus. she is a financial MAVEN! Don't you think she would be the LEAST tempted one??
12I recycle most catalogs without even opening them. I just go on-line anyway.
13I love flipping through the few that I get and then I toss them in the recycling, I don't usually order from them.
14this isn't even about the catalogues! he's totally controlling!
15My mom does that with my dad. He has some impulse shopping problems and he always orders junk we don't need from catalogs like Oriental Trading. I'm just glad those CD clubs are pretty much out of fashion, he would always get sucked into the introductory "deal."
16I'm with Jessie. My catalogs are sometimes my entertainment, especially when I'm sick and can't do a whole lot. That's really the only thing I'd get upset about.
17I've never ordered from a catalog before and I'd be hurt that he didn't think I could control myself. We're talking about trust issues here.
18I don't order anything from the catalogs I get...I just like flipping through them and looking at all the stuff that's in them. It bugs me that once you order something from a company, even if you order online, you start getting their catalogs like crazy. I ordered a swimsuit from Victoria's Secret and now I get their catalog every other week it seems. (And you can better believe my husband wouldn't throw THAT one out before at least flipping through it).
