Trimming Down With the Low-Car Diet

These days more fantasies are about ridding the burden of owning a car than trading up for a luxury vehicle. Zipcar, which has cars available to rent for as low as $9 per hour or reserved for a minimum of $68 per day, ran a timely promotion that we all can interpret into our own car-dependent lives.

The promotion was so popular they cut off the application process early, but their Low-Car Diet program is intriguing for anyone wanting to test how they could get on without a car. The diet entails that you only drive a car when absolutely necessary, and while the promotion calls for reserving a Zipcar, the rest of us can easily think of our own ride as the car of necessity.

Participants in the promotion receive free public transportation passes. Choosing to embark on your own experiment by purchasing your own public transit tickets would give you a realistic idea of how much life would cost without a car. This idea only works in areas with developed transportation system, but for those of you who do it's worth considering a new low-car diet of your own this Summer.

That is actually a very neat idea! I'm surprised I had never heard of it before.

Some cities, like Chicago have I-go cars which are hybrids or low emission vehicles. it's wonderful alternative to using even the zipcar.

It's a cool idea but would be way annoying with car seats (or am I just really lazy? lol)

I use Philly Car Share and its awesome. Cheaper than zip car ($3-6 an hour) plus the amount of cars you can choose range from Prius to Mini Coopers to Lexus to trucks and SUVs. Gas is paid for too! Cars are all over this town, mainly at public transportation hubs. Sure beats dealing with insurance and car payments! (and you get a free hour or two a month with a hybrid!)

I have seen the I-go and Zipcar here in Chicago - you may have to travel to the better neighborhoods but they seem very popular - I was actually thinking of signing up for one of the services. But, I am still stuck on the CTA - my best friend.

I would love that if there were a more extensive public transportation system here. Without a car, I'd have to walk 8 miles to work along the freeway!

I like zipcar okay, its a bummer when you have to return the car though, our nearest zipcar location is about 15 blocks away and after a day of ikea/trader joes/whatever, the last thing I want to do when I get home is go back out again and then walk back home.
