We celebrated Bastille Day with a variety of flaky croissants this morning, but it's likely many French citizens are enjoying their long Summer vacations and traveling over the holiday.
We might all have a little more joie de vivre if we had as many days off as the French. Do you know what the law says about how much time off French workers are entitled to?

My fiance works here in the states as a French expat and gets 35day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I only get 10days- so he's on vacay now in France using up two weeks- luckily he's sweet enough not to take all 7wks and leave me behind for all that time I can't be on vacay with him.
1I could only wish what I would do with that much vacation. Wow, on vacation in France for 25 days would be a dream, I could literally get lost in any country and just enjoy.
2It's not that easy to take so much vacation, many people end up losing at least a week or two each year. And remember that the French, like most Europeans, pay waaaaaaaay more tax than we do for all these 'perks'.
3I'd happily pay more in taxes for such benefits (health care included). Imagine the better quality of life!
455% enough for you? That's what I used to pay in The Netherlands. And healthcare was extra. And property taxes. And gas is more than twice the price over there too!
5Ouch - that is high! However... you get what you pay for, right?
6I had to guess the lowest number, because I would've been severely depressed (and packing my bags!) otherwise.
7Wow, I would love that much time off... but then again I would begin to wonder if I would bother coming back
8i'm a teacher, so i already get tons of vacay. BUT, unpaid of course. i'm teaching summer school right now, and half days are amazing.
there's a teacher that i work with who's taking a week off from summer school because, "i just NEED a break, i'm not used to teaching during the summer!" and i'm like, lady you would NOT do well with a typical 8-5 job!
9Finns get a minimum of 30 vacation days too. Our taxes are only slightly higher than what we paid while living in the US but it pays for health care, education through university, daycare, etc. Property tax is very low but we have to pay through the nose for things like cars and gas.
10I get 25 per year and I don't mind paying more taxes since it covers my healthcare and my travel is subsidized ... and I'm generally a happier and more productive worker. I can't imagine only having 10 days of vacay.
11Twinkle - Do you have a decent public transportation system?
12In and around cities we do. Out in the countryside, not so much.
13freegracefrom, you're thinking what I am thinking.
Transportation is always key; a car would be cumbersome right now.
14I can't imagine how behind you would get if you took off 25 days. I stress out when I take off 2 days, but I guess that happens when you work a position that doesn't have a back up.
15Well you obviously don't take off all 25 days at once! But it's so nice to be able to go for a week's holiday here and there or take long weekends when you'd like.
16I prefer to take all 25 days consecutively where I visit my family in the United States. It's so much better than the U.S. Vacations system. At least we get vacations.
