Brilliant or Baffling: Bride Finds Sponsor For Wedding on eBay

A brainstorming session that started out as a bake sale quickly turned into a bidding war for a bridesmaid job in a Virginia Beach wedding. Bride-to-be Kelly Gray was considering ways to raise extra money for her upcoming nuptials when her existing bridesmaid said, "We need to auction something (on eBay). There's Dr. Pepper cans and Cheetos bags for sale, so let's just go ahead and do a bridesmaid."

Kelly wasn't hopeful that the eBay plot would yield any results, but she ended up with dozens of bids. The winner was the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group which won with their final $5,700 bid and voluntarily upped it to $10,000. They'll also provide the beverages for the wedding.

Who will stand in as a bridesmaid remains to be determined, but the company's spokesman said they're thinking about having a contest or asking a celebrity. Kelly is very grateful and said, "I don’t want it to be extravagant, but now I can get that wonderful D.J. who has the lights; I can do that. Now I’m thinking of a honeymoon."

She never actually intended to get a corporate sponsor, just a random person who wanted to be a bridesmaid, and didn't really think she'd get any serious bids and certainly not for that much. Dr. Pepper came into the picture because she mentioned in an interview that she decided to put up the eBay auction after a friend saw a Dr. Pepper can that sold for $400.

If a company had approached me with $10,000 and providing drinks for the reception, I probably would have done it. They're showcasing their drinks to the guests and getting some publicity out of it. As long as she doesn't have to wear a Dr. Pepper-branded wedding gown, I don't see the harm.

I agree with you ladypenguin. I am amazed Dr P has gotten good press from this story being picked up.

It's her wedding she can do whatever the heck she wants. However, I know I wouldn't have been interested personally. My wedding was very small and thus affordable just the way I wanted it.

I find it baffling that she ebayed a bridesmaid position. She took what should be a personal ceremony and made it a game... But it's her wedding after all, so she can do what she wants.

    I'd rather elope. Eye-wink

It's trashy but at the same time it'd be hard to turn away that extra 10k- you can do a whole lot of wedding with that!!! Granted I would never have thought up something so bizarre in the first place . . .

I think it's pretty cool that the chance paid off. I like Dr. Pepper! Who cares if there's some corporate-ness there... an extra $10k for a wedding is awesome, and I bet the couple will be happy they did it.

The whole situation just confuses me, but I guess if she needed the cash this is one interesting way to do it. I wonder if they were the only bidders?

I think it was a good idea. She didn't know who would bid, and a lot of brides would love to have a little extra cash for their wedding. I know I would. So instead of having to skip things that I would like to have done I could. And instead of being like a lot of brides with expensive weddings that go in debt, she has a sponsor!

i love that - i think that there are so many great/ingenious ideas that people could have that they never action. it's really nice that the dr. pepper corporation is also taking such a key role in this - and that they are going to be creative on their side as well. imagine if they got a celeb to be a bridesmaid...that could be really cool!

I love this story! I think it's so cool that she came up with such a creative way to earn money to pay for her wedding. Good for her. It's amazing what can happen if you think out-of-the-box a bit.

I think it is a great idea. I am actually in the process of planning my wedding. I am looking for sponsors also. Let’s face it; the wedding industry has gotten way out of control. Everything is expensive. There is nothing wrong with being resourceful and thinking outside of the box. So far, I have received some good feedback from my efforts. I am offering my supporters free advertisement on my website, wedding programs, and on a display during my wedding reception. My website is www.ouronedollarwedding.com
