While some of you are crossing state lines to save on gas, South Texans have been crossing the border to Mexico to fill up their tanks. El Paso residents visit the nearest Mexican city, Ciudad Juárez, even though it's known for gang violence that is the cause of an average three killings a day. American "gas tourists" account for the 50 percent increase in gas sales there and the gains are evident along the border all the way to Tijuana.
El Paso residents admit they feel unsafe once they've gone south of the border to Ciudad Juárez but say they cannot afford to fill up their tanks in the US. Gas stations in their hometown have seen a 40 percent decrease in business since their customers have been taking advantage of Mexican prices, which are reported to be priced around $2.66 per gallon.

South Texas? El Paso is literally as West Texas as you can get. It's higher than Houston or Austin.
But I know what you mean.... If I lived in Del Rio, Brownsville, or any other border town with a matching Mexican border town, I would consider crossing the border to fill up if I needed to stretch my paycheck.
1Juarez is freakin scary.
2If i lived in Texas i would go. Why is the gas there sooo much cheaper? Gas here is $4.19 that is a BIG difference.
3When this said "south Texas" I was thinking Brownsville or Laredo. El Paso would be west...very, very west.
I'd do it in certain areas along the border. I've been to a few border towns, and some are safer than others. I go to Piedras Negras once a year, and I'd definitely gas up there if I lived nearby. Laredo is another story. Never been to Juarez, but it sounds similar to Laredo.
4I had a friend who lived in El Paso. She used to go across the border to get penicillin and other meds pretty often. Juarez also (at that time, ca1998) had $5 drink-and-drown (unlimited mixers) at the bars on Friday and Saturday night. I went once. It was pretty awesome.
5I would totally fill up in mexico if I could. Safety schmafety.
6That's less than half what it is here in CA. I'd totally gas up in Mexico. I'd just bring a friend or something if it was that scary.
7I've been to Juarez and didn't find it scary. And I was stuck in line to cross the border back into the U.S. for hours because of a bomb threat on the bridge!
I would definitely go to Mexico to fill up if I lived on the border.
8So many border towns are kind of scary! It's a good idea to fill up in Mexico for people across the border, though. I wouldn't do it at night.
