Arriving to a broken-in apartment after Thanksgiving break during college was an overwhelmingly violating feeling. Laptop? Gone. DVD collection? Vanished.
It was upsetting to me and my roommates that someone had forcefully entered our apartment and made our lives harder by having to buy replacement items, but we understood they were just things and felt lucky nobody was hurt. Have you ever had the unfortunate experience of someone stealing from you?

My purse was stolen from the "secure" breakroom where I worked... as a security officer at the airport. It had my keys, credit cards, sunglasses and makeup in it. Thankfully I always kept my cell phone, ATM card & driver's license on me while I worked...
1Does pickpocketing count? If it is...it was a day before Christmas in a NYC subway cramped with so much people. I was waiting for the train and everyone is shoving on the platform. I knew I was holding on to my purse but the pickpocket slashed it to take my wallet. Good thing, I don't have my debit cards there. I already did my shopping a month before.
2My house was broken into when I was 15. They got a lot of my jewelry and my walkman (I am old). And my car was broken into about 5 years ago. They got my CD player and some CDs.
3I hate my wallet stolen from my purse at the office. $1200 later.
I have also had my car stolen (on street parking) from in front of my house. Oldest car on the block may I add. I would have thought the landlords Audi TT was more desirable then my old honda.
Ugh and my high school was terrible. Jackets, books, backpacks, electronics.
4*Have not hate...
5Had my apartment broken into but they didn't take anything, the cops thought whoever did it was looking for drugs! (OK it was in Amsterdam but still!) My roommate and I didn't sleep there again.
6I also had lots of stuff stolen at high school, the most memorable was this adorable Mickey Mouse Wallet I had brought back from a trip to France. I was heartbroken.
I've had my bike stolen at work. Kinda ironic since I work at non-profit.
I've also had the rims on my car stolen. They weren't even flashy or anything!
7My car ... that was the most frustrating.
8Yeah, a wallet, a camera, a purse---ughh! IT"S TERRIBLE!
9My family's house was robbed when I was a little kid. They didn't take anything from me, but I felt so violated, even at six or seven, that a stranger went through all of my stuff.
Then in high school, my wallet was stolen from the locker room while I was at basketball practice. I had less than $20 in there, and no credit/debit card (yet), but I was mostly bummed because A) It was likely someone I knew, B) It was a really cool, unique wallet.
10I used to have an Acura Integra and this thing was a theif magnet.
It was stolen once and the genius drove it around the city for a good 7 months with a screwdriver in the ignition before the cops found it and got it back to me.
Then the same car was broken into on 3 separate occasions. Once at the mall (took my boyfriend's gym bag full of stinky clothes), once at my sister's house (took my new stereo and work badge), and once at my apartment (took my boyfriend's tool set). All in nice neighborhoods.
Thankfully, I no longer have that car
11I had my wallet stolen from my purse at a starbucks while I was being dumped.
12When I was a teenager our apartment was broken into 3 times!!! I can't remember what was stolen but I remember my dad bought one of those big metal boxy loud alarm systems. Everytime it went off I felt like I had to slide down a pole.
13I had my Magic cards stolen in high school. Back then it was a few hundred dollars worth, but nowadays it's a lot more because they're older editions. Ugh. I can't replace them because buying the uncommons and rares individually is too expensive, and good luck finding as many commons as I had for less than $500.
14My car was broken into this past year and my laptop and an overnight bag with my favorite jeans and shoes were stolen. I lost so much work that I will nevvvveeerrr get back. I can't even explain how upset I still am about it.
15My car was broken into. The stereo was stolen and my WHOLE CD case with dozens of rare import CDs that aren't in production any more.
16I had a few DVD sets stolen from my living room about 5 months ago. Happened at night while we were sleeping. They came in through the sliding glass door and took 3 of my DVD sets and my roommate's piece o' crap work laptop. All in all it wasn't a big loss. The shocker was that I had just bought a Wii and the box was lying out on the floor and they didn't take it.
17My car was broken into right after I got back from a road trip. Two bags full of luggage, shoes, books, and cds- gone. Luckily I brought the really important stuff in like my purse when I got home, but it was still frustrating. I still mourn the loss of my fav BCBG dress which I was never able to find again.
18Besides the clothes being gone, the worst bit was having to replace my broken windows and clean it all up. What a pain...
19Oh I've also had the side mirrors on my car stolen THREE TIMES. I have really bad luck with my car.
20my identity, online, through a paypal phishing scam before people knew what they were and the term was even coined. my apatrment at college was also broken into once over summer break and they took pretty much EVERYTHING. (suck.)
21my apartment in college was broken into and they stole my broken cd player (only the radio worked), a backpack with a busted zipper, and some prop swords from the acting professor I was subletting from. so not much of a loss. it was during Christmas break and I was studying abroad the next semester, so I never had to live there after the break-in.
22my car was broken into in front of my ex-boyfriend's apartment. we woke up in the morning to go camping and my passenger window had been broken out. stereo was gone as well as some credit cards and an expired ID that i had left in the car (bad decision, i know.) i was very upset but considering everything else that was in the car at the time, i was very lucky not to have lost more than a stereo.
23My car was broken into twice a few years ago. They stole the radio and some cds but I was more upset about shelling out the money for new windows!
24My sister in law has stolen money out of my purse. That's certainly the worst for me!
Well I recently had an odd experience. My house was not broken into perse, but the copper pipes on all four sides of my house that drain the gutters were stolen. I felt really violated and upset because I live in suburbia, my house sits pretty far from the street (meaning that had to come really far up onto our property) but mostly because it freaks me out that I could've been home. We park one car that we rarely use in the driveway, so its not as though we were obviously away. I'm thankful they didn't break into the inside of our house (though if they had tried I'm pretty confident the police would've come and they wouldn't have gotten away from it)...but the whole thing still really freaks me out...
25Yes, when I was a little girl. In third grade, my fellow classmate stole my Hello Kitty lip gloss. I threw a fit! LOL
26My ex stole $50 out of my purse while I slept and it was the only money I had back then.
Someone stole my car on a sunday afternoon and I was leaving out to go to starbucks.
27Yes, we had wedding gifts stolen from our wedding. Some people are scum!
28My car was broken into at my apartment - they got half of my irreplaceable stereo, my favorite purse (with no money, just an ID and three rolls of undeveloped film from an event for work), a camera that belonged to my office, and a backpack full of work materials. The thief did a really bad job with the radio theft, and my car's electrical system has never been right since. I also had two and a half bikes stolen from that same apartment, one by an ex-roommate who has since posted pictures on Flickr of herself riding it (it's been a few years, but still)....
29i got in a car accident several years ago and while my car was at the shop someone stole my cd visor case. that's when i realized i had bad taste in music. all my cds were stacked on the passenger seat but the visor case was gone. i wasn't that upset- i thought it was funny that someone hated my music selection so much that they went through the trouble of removing all the cds from the case before they stole it.
30My apartment was broken into. I came home to an unlocked door (I just thought I forgot to lock it) and discovered I had several things missing from my apartment, including a piggy bank I had since I was an infant. But, whomever broke in wasn't very smart because they missed a lot of good jewelry, cash on my dining room table, and a brand new DVD player still in its box.
Regardless, I felt extremely violated and overwhelmed. I am extra careful about everything in my house now before I leave it.
31I've had 2 cars stolen, both recovered and one was recovered and it was stripped down and deemed totaled by the insurance company!
32yep.. and not to mention i found all of my missing things (a lot) in my roommates room. moved out and haven't lived w/someone since.
33My home was broken in back during summer '03. The culprit came thru a bathroom window I forgot to close and stole my Bose radio, digital camera, $500 dollars I kept in lingerie drawer (ugh!) and even food from my fridge was gone
!! I felt so violated that some stranger was in my home and
went thru my stuff. I have since installed a home security system.
34I had my CD player yanked out of my car a few years ago when I still lived at home. I didn't even have the doors locked! Thats how secure I felt in my hometown. They also went into my brother's car, but couldn't get the CD player out (because it had not been manually installed). So, they decided to settle for the spare change in the cup holders. Give me a freaking break! Who is so desperate that they LITERALLY nickle and dime someone?!?! ugh.
35BOHO, OMG thats so just sucks! Talk about a double whammy.
36I've had a ton of stuff stolen over the years. Sadly, it would be an extremely long list. The worst was when my house was broken into...they took all of my jewelry, credit cards, checkbook and one pillowcase from my favorite sheet set which I assume was to carry the stuff they pilfered! Arrgh!! 2 years later and I'm still getting phone calls from different police stations around town letting me know they found some of my property on someone they've arrested. ARRGH!
37My house was broken into just LAST week! We have a security system and a 95lb golden retriever, but he still got my front window up without breaking the glass. Many lights were on in the house, as well, as the front porch light, because my husband was pulling an all-nighter at work. My dog and I were upstairs asleep with fans running so we didn't hear anything.
He got my laptop and purse, which contained my walled (with all my bank cards), 2 check books, a digital camera, my cell phone, diabetes supplies and my car and house key. What we can't figure out is why he didn't take the 30-or-so DVDs on top of the tv OR why he didn't walk into the dining room to grab my husband's laptop. If he did, he would have set off the motion detectors!!!!!!!!!
We have a suspect in mind but can't prove anything. He used my debit card for $100 in gas, but I don't have to pay for it, thankfully. The insurance company is another problem, though, don't get me started.
38He even took the time to climb over my couch to unplug the laptop and take the cords!!!!
39I was robbed in my studio apartment once when I was sleeping. they took my handbag, my mates wallet with his plane tickets and walked straight past us on the way out. That was scary.
My car was broken into along with five other cars in my building. It was locked and in a locked garage. I had my $5000 stereo stolen (it won awards and everything) along with my laptop which i lost two weeks of work on
I was absolutely gutted as my stereo was the one thing I really
loved. I still miss that stereo
40i had $250 stolen from my wallet in a piano practice room in college.
41A cautionary tale: Never put anything valuable in checked luggage!
Someone in the St. Paul/Minneapolis airport's Transport Security Admininstration (those federally-employed luggage handlers/screeners) stole my brand new Macbook (lost that entire year's pictures
) and a flawless 2 carat emerald-cut aquamarine set in a 18k yellow gold bezel
setting. It was the most beautiful ring I've ever seen (still), and was sentimental too because my mom got it for me on our big vacation together in Thailand.
It was SO STUPID to have that stuff in my suitcase, I realize, but I thought it would be OK because only TSA was to handle it. But no, it was an inside job. They exploited the fact that since 9/11 we can't have locks on our luggage. I'm sure it's a nice little scheme they have going there. . .
At the time I was absolutely devastated, sickened, and angry, and it's been several years but I'm still FURIOUS when I think about it. Now, I never put anything remotely valuable in checked luggage, even if it means having to haul around a much heavier carryon bag.
42Someone stole my Beanie Babies in 4th grade. They returned the little bag I had them in, but stuffed it full of old hats and gloves from the lost-and-found. Isn't it sad that people do stuff like this to each other?
43i've had things taken from me, and it's not the nicest of experiences. my fiance did as well. it's a shame that people are like that -
44my purse was stolen from my car at my old work last year. i didn't have a locker there so i'd always through my purse under my passenger side seat. well, either i forgot to do that or i didn't do it well and someone bashed in my passenger side window and grabbed it. they only got a few bucks, and i cancelled my checks and cards before they could use it, but my social security card was in there by accident (i had needed it a few weeks earlier and had forgotten to take it out.) i haven't had any problems with identity/credit theft yet but that's something that's gonna stay with me for awhile ya know? and it was a super cute purse i had found on clearance at urban outfitters, so i was never able to replace it. plus, the timing really sucked. i discovered it the evening before my last college final, which was at 7:45am. i freaked out and my dad drove up to school, switched cars with me, then drove my car with the broken window 80 miles back home to get it fixed. gotta love dads
45Not me personally. The house I lived in when I was a teenager got broken into, though. They stole my mom's jewelry and that's it.
46I had my phone stolen and a watch!!
47But that's nothing in comparison to some of the stuff that yall have lost!
48yes but nothing of extreme value, an empty wallet once (which I found rather humourous) and cd's of course. Thats all I can think of.
