The price of gasoline has prompted many people to seek jobs closer to home, but if you'd rather start from scratch and move to a new neighborhood here's a website that you should keep handy. After you've explored a few neighborhoods, plug each prospective address into Walk Score and it will generate a map of all of the walkable amenities in the area.
The website will calculate a walk score for the neighborhood, and comparing each score will allow you to consider how much driving would be necessary in one neighborhood versus another. It's a useful tool when you consider that high gas prices aren't budging, driving less is good for the environment, and walking more is good for you. What's your neighborhood's walk score?

God I love where I live, 74 out of 100!
1My neighborhood did well too (83), which is exactly why I picked it. I got stranded at home in a snow storm once and since then, I've always considered walk-ability key to choosing where to move.
2I was wondering if they take sidewalks into factor on this tool? Because while there are several nearby restaurants, grocery stores, etc. etc. to my home, there are absolutely NO SIDEWALKS and you'd have to cross impossibly busy and pedestrian unfriendly highways to get to these said places. I think I'd want to know that about a neighborhood before I moved in...
3Mines only a 45. But that seems like a lot for my area there is not that much to walk to, it also says there is a movie theater within walking distance and there is not.
4Right now I live in a city in the Bay Area and the walk score is only 34, which is predictable. However, I'll be moving to Boston in August, where the walk score is around 90!! With gas prices so high, being able to walk and take the T are things that I am super excited about.

8Interesting....my 'hood received a 74. This is pretty high since I consider my house to be in a residential area. It's an older neighborhood in Portland, OR so there's no giant strip malls nearby. Thank goodness!
9I live in the middle of nowehere... lol There's stuff near by, but like syako's there are barely any sidewalks... I know for sure this site doesn't take that into consideration because of some of the places it listed...

12like syako and darkangel, i live in an area without sidewalks. the town i'm in for college has fewer than 10,000 year-round residents, and i can't go running because they didn't put sidewalks anywhere north of campus! how ridiculous!

this is great, i can print out the list of walkable places and use this as motivation when i feel like driving someplace.
