Local cuisine is one of the best experiences while traveling because it allows us to enjoy unique flavors that make us feel more connected to our surroundings. The only problem is that eating out isn't cheap and vacations are expensive even without factoring in delicious meals.
Glamour's July issue offers some tips for cheaper trips, but only their tip about splurging at lunch stood out to me as something to keep in mind while traveling this Summer. According to Cheri Sicard, the editor of fabuloustravel.com, "a midday meal is often half the price of dinner." Glamour adds, "To avoid pricey tourist traps, use chowhound.com or ask locals for dining picks. Keep costs down by ordering area specialties: A cocktail in Argentina can run you $7; a fabulous glass of wine only a buck."

Don't go to TOURIST areas when you are going to eat - inevitably prices will spike. Plus, the alcohol at restaurants catering to tourists is more pricey, because more people on vacation are inclined to drink, so be sure to look at the whole menu when you are checking a place out.
1I agree with MindayH. Be sure when you're heading out of the tourist area that you are careful. In some places you'd be much safer just to stay with all the tourists and save money elsewhere.
2- Walk and use public transport, not taxis.
3- Buy nice things like cheese, bread, ham and a bottle of wine in a supermarket (I always love to shop groceries in a foreign country) and have a pick-nick.
- Or go have lunch at the local university where the always have cheap meals, not just for students.
- If you are a student, a lot of places, like museums have student reductions so get an international student card.
- Travel off season, not in high season: it's cheaper and also a lot less crowded.
- Some museums have days when there is not entry, find out when.
