TeamSugar member WhiplashGirlchild crosses state lines to refill her tank because gas is so much less expensive that way, and her smart habit got me wondering about the other ways some of you are saving on gas. With gas prices averaging $4 nationwide, are you consciously driving less, taking public transportation more, have you purchased a more fuel-efficient car, or doing something else to save on gas?

All of the above honestly.
I already do a good job with saving on gas. It really isn't that hard combining trips, spending $50 at the grocery store to get $.10 off per gallon when I get gas. I have always paid attention to what I am doing so I think the people that have the most problems are the ones that didn't pay attention to what they were spending in the first place.
I bought a fuel efficient car years ago, and I am glad I did, I only have to fuel up twice a month or a month now that I'm driving less also gas hasn't yet sky rocketed like in other places.
Driving slower and making sure tires are inflated correctly.
I also drive a bit less and only use the air when I have to.
I just got an internship at a large oil company that operates in America. I usually just fill up there, because I feel like its going to my paycheck. And once I start working I get a gas card, which will be very nice because I'll be very far from my family and friends, so ill be able to visit them.
In the meantime I am working a low-paying job and don't leave the house unless I'm going to work. I take public transportation to the supermarket (it doesn't go to my job, unfortunately) which is free through my school. And other than that I don't go anywhere! Then again theres not much to do in SW Virginia...
Sadly, in the Bay Area, now even the cheapy gas stations are the same price as the better gas stations and there's nowhere really to turn for cheaper gas. I mainly just drive a little slower (to what extent I'll still be sane at!) and try to drive a little less, but my main use of the car (driving to work and back) is unavoidable.
I always take public transport. Thank you, CTA.
i try to drive more slowly, drive less & combine trips if possible. it took me $50+ to fill up my little honda civic this afternoon, though! insane.
I bought a fuel efficient car years ago- My little Saturn got 45 mpg! Unfortunately, a F-350 rear-ended me today officially ending the life of my little girl
luckily, I don't have to pay for gas. My boss covers it because I run errands in my vehicle. But I still have to make that stretch, I can't just go fill up every day. So I drive slower and try not to run out for lunch as much.
I haven't made any changes, since I've been using public transit exclusively for years.
I am trying not to drive as much, also easing up on the gas pedal. I read that for every 5 mph you go over 60, its like spending an extra $.50 per gallon on gas. Ever since then i drive like a granny on the highway... haha
i combine my trips so i can get more done in the same area at once.
Nope, not doing anything. I'm as conservative with gas as they get in America with the exception of people who use public transit. Las Vegas transit is pathetic but if it were anything like European transits, I would have no problem being car'less.
Besides driving into Jersey for my gas (thanks for the shout-out) I've just been driving less and less in general. I'm lucky that my office is six blocks from my home so I don't need to drive to work. I'd say I drive once or twice a week to run errands.
I consider selling my car all the time. I really don't need it 99% of the time. But it's convenient to have around. And it's totally paid off and my insurance is low and I live in the only part of downtown Philly that has free parking so I figure that I might as well keep it.
I downsized from a Honda Pilot to a Nissan Rogue. Also, when I run errands I try and plan out a route that's quick.
In order to drive less, I plan my errands, grocery shopping and everything else I have to do in one day. Also, I've been considering using mass transit while my son is at camp. I would only drive on weekends.
All of the above. I bought a hybrid last year.
I'm so lucky that my company pays for my gas!
I drive less and bike more. I live in the city so I don't have to drive to do everything. Unfortunately I always get jobs not in the city somehow.
I research where the cheapest gas is (but it still has to be a major brand for my car
), and I
also ghetto it up and put my car in neutral as much as I can haha.
staying home as much as possible. Lately we have all had lots of doctor appt's and my doctors in particular are 30 min away. We live about 20-30 min from everything so that makes it tough. Moving isn't an option though. So, we only do "trips" to shop, mall, etc...once a week, maybe twice if necessary. Or I arrange my shopping on days I have to be out like when I have my acupuncture appointment. Get it all done in one shot.
I don't volunteer to drive when we go out like I used to. I have a few friends whose company pays for their gas so I let them drive. Living in Dallas is very difficult when it comes to alternative ways to get around (i.e. public transportation, bikes).
Options 1 AND 4.
I keep an eye out for cheap gas and fill up. I know everyone usually gets regular, especially now, but I get more miles on my little efficient car with premium and I try to keep the a/c off as much as I can stand so I do not burn more gas.
combining trips and driving less. i've been enjoying my place and trying to learn to cook more dishes
I drive a hybrid car and take public transporation when it's feasible. But it's not to save money. It's because I care about the environment and hate to see us so dependent on foreign countries for a resource. I am glad gas prices are going up since it seems to be the only way to motivate U.S. citizens to conserve.
Honest, I couldn't tell you what gas goes for in my neighborhood. You can't do anything about the price, so why obsess over it? People are always going to moan about gas prices. They complained when it was $1 and they'll complain when it's $10. People fixate on this one cost of living because it's one of the few things we always buy in the same unit (a gallon, whereas we buy milk in quarts, gallons, half gallons, etc) and one of the few things we buy by itself (again, as opposed to milk, which may be 1 of 20 things on your receipt) so it's easy to keep tabs on the cost.
My husband takes public transportation to and from work and we both drive less.
I have a fuel efficient car and I strive to drive less. I used to make weekly shopping trips to my favorite grocery store that's about a 20 minute drive away, and I've cut it back to every other week plus combining the drive with other errands.
All of the above! My car already gets pretty good gas mileage, but I'm definitely driving it less. I take a bus for my 40 mile commute and group my errands into as few trips as possible...and seriously, I do not give a darn about the brand name gasoline, give me the "cheap" stuff!
My car gets GREAT gas mileage, thankfully, but I am trying not to drive places that I don't need to go.
I don't normally drive conservatively. I have an SUV and I always assumed that my gas mileage was low and that was that. I've always gotten e-mails and read articles about small changes you can make to your driving habits to save on gas, and this week I've been trying them out. I used to go through half a tank each week just driving to and from work. Since Monday, I've been slowing down, stepping lighter on the pedals and rolling down the windows instead of using the A/C. The result? It's been 4 days and the needle is still near full on my gas gauge. I guess sometimes it really does pay to listen!
the good thing is that i live in NYC so i can take the subway or walk to just about everywhere that i want to go. when i'm in NJ at my mom's house, i try to limit the trips that i take in my car, or try to combine trips so that i'm not using as much gas. it's really getting out of control how much it costs now, and unfortunately, my job doesn't compensate more for the rising price in gas, so i have less money to spend on it.
I also ride my bike for short trips - I have a good sized basket for grocery shopping.
We fall in line at Costco gas since it's always 10cents cheaper. I also try to be fuel efficient by driving at 70mph on cruise control on the freeway. Accdg to my car manual, that's when it's most fuely efficient
Carpool!
My dad goes to cheapgas.com everyday. My dad drives an F-150 and has the nerve to complain about gas but is not doing anything to help his pocket. I suggested he sell his truck and get something more fuel efficient but of course he blew me off!
And when i get my car I'm def. not paying for gas!
these prices are insane!!!!!!! we just got to $4 and we spend so much money to get gas but we cannot even go sumwhere we want to go....basically only to work and back, but all yer paycheck goes to pay for gas...so wut is the point....GRRR
I ride my bike to work. I live 4.4 miles from my place of employment. I carry a back pack with a change of clothes, once I arrive at work I towel off, get changed and get to work. The health benifit's and savings are worth it.
