What British Brides Shell Out For Their Big Day

The $30,000 average price tag on an American wedding seems high to many of us, but compared to what? Everything is relative according to our location and budget flexibility, so for some fun food-for-thought let's consider what UK brides are spending on their nuptials. Taking into account the dumpy dollar and its low value compared to the British pound, life as a US bride continues to brighten against that alternative. Find out how much the average bride across the Atlantic pays for their wedding when you read more.

According to survey results released just yesterday by You and Your Wedding magazine, the average cost of getting hitched as a 2008 UK bride is £20,273. The dollar equivalent to that juicy number is approximately $40,005. Their survey of 1,500 brides uncovered these average expenditures: £7,724 for wedding reception; £977 on wedding dress; £1,927 for bride's accessories, gym memberships, and cosmetic treatments. Will the US become a place for British brides to hold a cheaper destination wedding?!

This really surprises me! I thought that other countries would spend much less.

is it fair to say that "gym membership" is part of wedding costs? i guess for some, but you really should be going to the gym all the time, not just during wedding season

ha I agree skigurl, but then again if I ever get married I'll probably tack on more money to my exercise routine. Hire a personal trainer or something like that so I can see why they included it.

I just can't believe that this is the AVERAGE price of a wedding. Maybe I'm an odd one, but I'd rather put a healthy down payment on a house!

I'm from the UK and I think this is absurd. I completely agree with jacrabbit84 - fancy spending all that money on just one day!

I was talking to a friend the other day who said she wouldn't think anything of spending £5000 - £10 000 on her wedding dress ALONE (thats roughly $10 000 - $20 000 for you guys I think!) I would be looking to spend less than this on the entire ceremony.

It is materialistic, not good for the environment, off-putting to your future fiance and really wrong when you think about poorer parts of the world. I would prefer to have a cheaper ceremony where your love matters more than how much money you've got.
