What's the Most You Have Spent as a Bridesmaid?

It's more than acceptable to turn down some wedding-related events because of financial strain, but during a busy wedding season, costs can add up even if you are bowing out of events here and there. Arriving as a guest can be expensive in its own right, but the title of bridesmaid comes with several additional costs that, according to The Knot, can easily amount to $1,000 or more.

Keep in mind, especially as an out-of-town bridesmaid, that just because you receive an invitation to a sampling of showers doesn't mean the bride expects you to be there. There are happy mediums to be found in managing the many events and your budget, so pick which are most important for you to attend and don't look back!

omg radarkitty - me too! it was the worst feeling having to pay sooo much for a dress that i've never worn again.
any ideas you guys on what you can do with your dress? mine was a long dress - to the floor to be exactly - and material is satin. never planning on wearing it again.
i have spent a lot money on another wedding i was in - but i was the maid of honor - and being that she was my bff- i didn't mind at all.

I've been a bridesmaid in two weddings so far (and at least one more to go). For the last wedding I participated in, I spent an arm and a leg. I love my friend, but wow, the process was expensive!

I only spent around $500 on my sister's wedding and I was the maid of honor. Thank goodness for thrifty ladies!

I have spent SO much if you include airfare and hotels for my cross country jaunts (college in So Cal, law school in DC, friends all over the map!)... some cost more even when the dress was nothing, some cost less even when the dress was a few hundred. It is all the hidden costs included.

I keep counting people off, and unless my bachelor best guy friends feel the need to include me in their weddings, I think I'm off the hook for good (fingers crossed on them eloping!).

I went away for college and my best friend got married the April our graduating year back home. Since I was the maid-of-honor, I flew home for the bachelorette party/bridal (thank god it was the same weekend) and for the actual wedding. Tickets cost $250 each time, due to the fact that "home" is Florida and it was spring break time.

Also, I wasn't able to do a proper dress fitting (was back in college when she decided on a bridesmaid' dress), besides the $150 I spent on the dress, I spent another $100 on alterations.

I love my best friend to death and we've planned being each other's MOH since we were in junior high, but man, I spent a lot of money for a pretty simple wedding. Heh...

I was a bridesmaid twice but I haven't been one in over 10 years, thank God. The last time I was one, I had to pay about $400 - not too shabby, except that I was unemployed at the time, so it was pretty rough.

Never a bridesmaid. But I can say that my bridemaids spent $130 on the dress, and probably around $30 each on the shower and bachelorette party combined.

I can say I have spent a pretty penny over the years, between hosting Engagement Parties, Showers, Bachlorette Parties, then the dress, shoes, airfare to the wedding, and then the hotel. And that was just one wedding. Thankfully I think most of my bridesmaid days are behind me. My fiance and I are not having a wedding party - I am going to have my brother and he is just going to ask his best friend.

I can't believe the number of people that have never been a bridesmaid!! I guess its because they are younger???? I have been in 4 weddings. The only one that I thought was a bit much was about 6 years ago. It was $375 on the dress alone - PLUS all of the luncheons, fittings, etc. were in a city that is about 150 miles from where we all lived. The bride's family ended up paying for half of my dress b/c I turned her down at first. Who has $375 extra dollars at 22 years old??

I've definitely spent over $1000 on a couple stints as a bridesmaid. And believe me, I'm bitter about it. Southern weddings are extremely expensive.

I have never been a bridesmaid (and I'm 29 so maybe I never will). I spent $100 on my wedding dress -- J Crew wedding dress on clearance - so it would hurt to spend hundreds on a bridesmaid dress! My husband and I each had one attendant and we let them wear whatever they wanted. So many people our age had already been in a lot of weddings (including our attendants) and were broke, so we spared them some money.

Gosh, I'm glad I haven't had the bridesmaid experience yet. That's ridiculous for a bride to expect her friends to spend so much.

I spent about $500 for my cousin's wedding a couple of years ago. I felt kinda bad for his fiance because she ended up having about 8 bridesmaid since there were so many people that "had" to be included. Family politics indeed! Most of the bridal party was from the groom's side of the family but we're a huge family and she comes from a small family.

Looking back, i don't think i would have minded not being the bridal party!

I just spent around $800 on a good friends wedding. That was an in town wedding and was cost of dress, gifts, and her bachelorette party. It is alot of money but it is a once (hopefully) in a life time event for someone and I think that's what friends are for; to make it an extra special event for the bride. However, I may be biased since I'm getting married in two weeks.

I've been around, and over the years have never been asked to be a bridesmaid! All my friends and cousins that I grew up with had small weddings, or went to Vegas. I've been able to spend "ugly bridesmaid dress money" on other things in life! Smiling

Def spent way over $1000, enough to make it more than a single paycheck. Ouch.

I've thankfully have only spent $250 on a horrible dress and shoes for one plus gift and hair. Personally I feel that you are asking the person to do you a favor and therefore the bride should be the one paying. When both me and my sister got married our bridesmaid did not pay a cent for anything that was to be used or wore on the wedding day. If they wanted to buy a present or spend money anouther way for the wedding that was up to them. Personally I spent $250 for each (2) of my bridesmaid's dresses and allowed them to wear any shoes they wanted as long as they looked good. Then I got them their jewerly and no one got their hair or makeup done professionally, not even me.

I've been a bridesmaid 3 times, one of those I was maid of honor. I don't think I've spent more than 300$ each time. I always look for sales and I was lucky enough to get the dresses for less than 50$ each time. Once we were able to find the dresses for 10$ each. That left enough money in case of fitting emergencies... there always is one.

I'm definitely baffled by the number of you lucky souls who've never been through this. On a positive note, I will say that you're missing out on some parts of the experience that are totally worth it and fun. But I think so far in the comments I win with a grand tally of SIX turns as a bridesmaid, with turn number 7 coming up in September. I may be bad with boys, but I'm good with friends. They've all had their good and bad moments. The cheapest involved no dress whatsoever (we just wore whatever and were bridesmaids bc we were the only ones THERE besides family) and a weekend of free food and booze and lots of fun. The most expensive involved three different four hour drives (both ways), a $300 dress I'll never wear again, two gifts, $20 to a hairdresser (for an updo I did NOT want), a $50 pair of shoes, plus expenses for hosting a party. I'd guess it came to around $1000. It was all fun, but sheesh.

Maybe because I'm only 22 and most of my female friends are sort of strong-headed and not looking to settle down anytime soon? I still want to be a bridesmaid though =P

I think it's funny how many people talk negatively about being in other's weddings, yet still have bridesmaids of their own when their day comes.

If you don't like the person enough to stand up for them with pride, why bother saying yes?

I've spent between $700-900... but I was MOH so I held the shower and Buck&Doe, which added to the cost.

I have blown well over $1200 on being a bridesmaid. Somehow brides forget every time they were a bridesmaid and don't think about costs when making decisions. After four weddings as a bridesmaid in one year, I'm planning my wedding with care. Black dresses of their choice for all the girls.

I was my best friend's maid of honor last month and I only spent around $200 total. I was lucky in that the dress I wore is super cute and I can actually wear it again. I'm getting married myself in October and I'm trying to make sure the dresses they wear are reasonably priced. I'm also letting them pick their dresses. (I pick color and length.) So.. that should help.
