How to Get Your Free Credit Score

We're all eligible to receive three free credit reports every year (one from each of the national credit bureaus), but credit scores typically come at a cost of $15.95 per score. There are some unreliable sites out there that may claim to have access to free credit scores, but generally those sites aren't trustworthy.

MyFICO.com is actually a division of Fair Issac, the company that calculates consumer credit ratings for lenders, and is a legitimate source of credit information. They have a promotion going on that includes a free trial of their services, which comes with two free Equifax FICO scores and credit reports. If you cancel the 30-day trial immediately after receiving your free reports and score, you won't have to worry about forgetting to cancel and having to pay for a service that you may not want. The option to cancel online makes it easy.

I prefer AnnualCreditReport.com - it's totally FREE (not free trial) and legit:

"AnnualCreditReport.com is a centralized service for consumers to request free annual credit reports. It was created by the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

AnnualCreditReport.com provides consumers with the secure means to request and obtain a free credit report once every 12 months from each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies in accordance with the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act)."

Jspeed I was reading Suze Ormon's book about women and money and she suggests to do it with annualcreditreport.com because it's free. I did it and was satisfied with the report.

I agree, annualcreditreport.com is the way to go if you need a credit report, the only problem is you don't get the score. (I've used it when renting my home and other times when people want to see my report)

I'm considering whether to apply for a Washington Mutual credit card (to be used for emergencies only), since they have a credit-monitoring service included with the card, and give you your FICO score free every month.

I use annualcreditreport too, but I guess it is interesting that you can get one from each at different points in the year by doing them separately

TransUnion will soon allow most of us to see our credit SCORE free for 6 or 9 months: https://www.listclassaction.com/
However, it's not the FICO score, it is just TransUnion's score.

I haven't heard about the WaMu card, mini_pixie - I'm going to look into that.

I thought I read somewhere that our FICO score is all three scores from the report and whichever score is in the middle that would round up as our FICO score.

I use annualcreditreport.com for reports also. I simply highlighted this promotion because they are offering a free score as well, which I haven't found anywhere else.

Thanks Savvy! This is very useful.
I remember asking about this a month or so ago.

RosaDilia, I used to work in mortgages and that is how we calculated people's credit score. Look at all three credit reporting agencies and your score is the middle one.

I signed up for the MyFico ScoreWatch free trial and I've really loved it. I had some misreporting on my credit reports that I was handling. It let me know instantly every time something changed.

Graylen, keep us posted on how you like the MyFico ScoreWatch.
How long have you been using it? Do you plan on continuing to use it after your free trial is up?

    I'm very curious to know.

Is it just me or isn't an individual's credit score something that is personal and should be assessable to that individual any day of the year for free?

If I want to know my bank balance or credit card balance I can know instantly. Even by just budgeting I can get a pretty good idea. The science of credit scores get tricky so I believe it should be available, for free, all year around by one of the credit bureaus.

    What a concept.

make sure you DON'T go to freecreditreport.com instead of annualcreditreport.com because they do that free trial offer but are very sneaky about it. i did it and called to cancel it the next day. a month later my credit card started getting charged and i had to really complain before they would finally cancel it and credit me back, as they were supposed to!
