How Much Do You Tip For Food Delivery?

There's no question that you should tip the guy or gal who delivers your dinner, but I've run into different opinions about how much should be given. Some of those dining-in have a general amount they tip in appreciation, and others vary what they give according to the total bill. How do you determine tips for delivery?

I usually tip $2-3 on my lunch delivery. At the restaurant if the gratuity is not already included I tip 15% of the total cost of the meal.

I do tip 10% percent when I do pick up. One guy was seriously sweating and I had to tip him.

This is so funny. I ordered food last night --something I hardly do. I gave the guy a 5.00 tip, he was very pleasant, bought the food to the lobby (I never make them come up--it freaks me out), and he was surprised. He was like no one gives me a tip. I was shocked. I didn't know it was so widespread that many people do not give tips. Is this true?

I probably shouldn't of answered this survey, because I don't do delivery. It lazy for me. I live REALLY close to practically everything, and I can't fathom paying someone an extra $2-3 just to bring it to me.

But that's what I WOULD tip if for some odd reason I did order in. Honestly I would only order delivery if both my bf & I were sick or injured (like a broken leg or something).

if it comes on time, i tip according to the bill. if it's late or messed up i'm going to alter that. but i don't do delivery. i like to pick my stuff up and make sure it's right before i leave. things always get messed up.

I tip 15 to 20 percent of the bill, but when I can tell that the delivery person is clearly not doing this just to make a few extra bucks, I tip a little more. One man sometimes brings his little boy along, and they have such a nice father-son relationship that I always overtip.

Dont do delivery that often, but my rule of thumb is usually: 10% if there is already a delivery charge. 15% standard. 20% to a mom and pop shop that I know I will be ordering from again.

I usually tip 15-20%, even if there is a delivery charge. Delivery charges don't always go to the driver. If they show up significantly quicker than they said, especially if it's not great weather, I'll tip more. I delivered pizzas before, I know what a pain it can be.

i tip depending on how much the bill is, but i would definitely factor in bad weather, time of day, and courtesy of the delivery guy and i may tip more if i think they deserve it

if i've ordered delivery and paid w/ a credit card, it'll usually be a % of the total, but if i pay w/ cash...i usually just make it a few bucks and call it a day. i know that it's not the best job to deliver food in NYC - but to think that the person is probably only walking a couple blocks - they don't deserve a LOT to do that

As a former delivery driver, I can honestly tell you that the delivery charge goes to the company. We don't get anything more than the tips and if it's a good place, mileage per delivery.

I usually tip about $4-$5 for delivery...
    But if it's:
    (1)Raining
    (2)They're really nice/funny/cute
(3)Look like they've had the day from hell

I'll tip like up to $20 regardless of the price of the meal.

I never know what to tip so I just always tip 20% of the bill(for everything hair, restaurnat, delivery, whatever). If it's really late or really bad then I will just tip 10%. But I feel so guilty doing that, that I almost never do

i found out from this survey that i'm a bad delivery tipper. i get delivery 1 or 2 times a week and i usually base it on the speed of the delivery. i can't remember ever tipping more than a dollar or two. AND i've always reduced my tip if there was a delivery charge. if it helps, i do tip more if its cold or raining.

I never get delivery (I live right by a pizza place, thai, and Indian because it is so much quicker to pick it up myself - but I figure that if I get delivery - I pay as much as I would at the restaurant - a server brings the food from the kitchen to a table, but a driver goes a lot farther to bring me my food.

Delivering food is definitely not one of the greatest jobs in the world. For pizza, the bill usually comes to around $14-16, and I'll just give them $20 and tell them to keep the change. Plus, with the price of gas these days (I think most drivers have to pay for their own gas)...

At least $5. Delivering is one of the most dangerous jobs - people know if you're wearing a Domino's hat, you're probably carrying a fanny-pack full of cash. Food delivery people usually use their own cars, pay for their own gas and repairs, etc. My motto is, if you don't want to pay for the added convenience, go pick it up yourself.

I typically tip $5 bucks for delivery. I mean they are only delivering my food not serving me anything.

The only times I ever do delivery, it's because it's blizzarding out, so I tend to be pretty generous. So I guess I tip based on a ton of things, weather included! Smiling

I usually tip 10% and end up round up a bit(say $30, so should I tip $3, but sometimes I don't want to use up my singles so I just give them a $5 to make it easier for myself). But if they're excessively late, I'll be much less inclined to round up, and I'll probably give the bare minimum or try to get away with a smidge less.

Hmm after reading some of these comments, I suppose it depends on location. For example, when I'm at home, we don't get food delivered. In fact, I don't think my parents ever ordered food for delivery at my house for my entire life. They usually call and pick it up.

But when I'm away at school, living by my rules lol, I end up ordering out because I'm too lazy to go outside most of the time. The other times is kind of pointless to go out because since my dorm is in the Financial District, all restaurants close so early, that the only option is really the 24-hr McDonald's. And I don't particularly like the idea of walking to McDonald's at 1am or so. But the deliverymen don't typically drive cars. They usually walk/bicycle/motorbike, at least whenever I order and they don't need compensation for gas if they walk or bicycle.

    Location, location, location!

I usually only order pizza, and very rarely. I use to give about a $3 tip. But now with gas prices being so high, I know now that I would have to pay at least $5. Going any lower or not at all would be completely rude to the driver.
