This was pretty easy, but good information to remember. A good idea would be to discuss which countries are ones in which gratuities are expected.

For question 3 I would have tipped both the hostess and the server.

I remember a while back that people were getting pretty heated about tipping your barrista and I was shocked how many people don't tip for an espresso drink, but apparently everyone knows that you tip everyone while on vacation? Seems strange to me.

Plus, the front desk associate upgraded my room from my normal on a recent business trip - I definitely included him in the numerous other people I tipped, and didn't even expense that one.

That's the one part that sucks about vacations - tipping. You may as well bring an extra $100. It seems as if everyone in the hotel gets a tip except for the front desk & hosts.

Easy quiz! I work at a hotel and the BEST perk I get is free nights at other hotels around the world because of this I always tip everyone BUT it can be hard sometimes because they know I come from a sister property and they dont want to take it!!!

Hostesses usually get tipped out by the waitresses, cubadog. That's why they don't get tips regularly.

I know monday but I do it because I always get amazing service when I do and I always get extras.

It's funny how tipping equals good service these days. Aren't you supposed to get good service any way? We tip 15-20% at a restaurant depending on the service, and if we don't spend very much it's usually more 30-40% tip, but tipping your way to good service goads me.

i got all the questions right - but to be honest, i don't necessarily agree with it all. being in NYC - i've become accustomed to doormen, and i dont tip them every time they get me a cab...i give htem a bonus during the holidays though. the same thing for maids...depending on where i stay and how long, i don't know if i feel the need to tip. if i'm at a resort for a week, that's one thing...but if i'm only in a place for a couple days, then it's not necessarily needed. to be eco-sensitive, i don't always have them wash the towels every night etc...and i'm usually a neat person. i even make the bed before i leave while i'm on vacation.

I agree Sundrops I don't think tipping should be the reason you get good service. I also don't tip to get good service, I do it because I appreciate the service I've gotten. I don't always tip for every single service. Like at hotels I don't usually tip housekeeping because I am so neat and usually don't get service for the 2 or 3 nights I am there. I never ask for extra anything and I clean up as much as I can before I leave. For Valet or bellman service I usually tip because I work at a hotel and I know those guys depend on tips and if we go out to eat I tip pretty well too.

Why does everyone feel you need to tip the everyone. I tip wait staff because they are paid under the reg min. wage. Anyone earning over the min. wage does not get a tip, unless they go out of their way to do something and are very attentive to us. Do you tip the airline employee that lugs your bags to the conveyor belt or are put on the plane? I really get tired of the tip jars on buses. The only room stewards that get a tip from me are on cruises, they actually do deserve it and really do work for it.

Honestly any tip for the front desk is nice. As a front desk agent, we get a lot of screaming and yelling guests, so it's nice when some one recognizes all that you do for them. So, if you want to throw us $5 so we can buy our lunch, we would honestly love you forever! Though, we will most likely try and turn it down at least once.

Front desk staff is #1 on my list of who to tip, they are in charge of where you sleep. I can't think of someone I would want to tip more. For a two night stay I will always slip them a $20 to ensure I get the room as requested (bed size and smoking preference).

This will also encourage them to keep you away from rooms with small kids, away from ice machines and elevators.Usually if they are able they will either give you a better view or a better appointed room.

I'm a newlywed and we are both really new to tipping (my husband is british and i've never really taken any holidays before where i had to know how to tip etc) so in LV recently we asked for a different room and the front desk guy was v. accommodating and gave us a room in the part of the hotel that we wanted, with a good view, and we were completely lost and awkward about what to tip so we gave ten bucks. i felt so bad but my husband thought it was enough.
