It’s that time of year when universities are printing their programs and preparing their campuses for swarms of proud families primed for graduation. During May and June I always find myself counting how many years it’s been since my own college graduation, and every year I can’t believe how time has flown and how quickly the lives have changed of everyone who’s close to me.
The newest graduating class is receiving degrees in carefully-thought-out majors, though I can confidently say that some of them will end up choosing careers that have little to do with what’s stated on their diplomas. Your degree itself has likely taken you places that would have been unreachable with out it, but have you been able to put your college major to use?

I graduated with a degree in Microbiology, and I got a job as a Microbiologist. So yes, I'd say it was put to good use
1I majored in Psychology and minored in Developmental Psychology as well as Education. During school, I did research and worked a lot with kids so that applied. Right now I am working as a litigation assistant at a law firm; the only connection there is that Psychology knowledge helps you understand how to communicate with and empathize with people. Next, I'll be going to law school to hopefully become a corporate attorney who does a lot of pro bono work, where my Psych background would come in handy.
In any case, Psychology is one of those majors that you don't directly use unless you are going into academia or some sort of counseling. However, it is always helpful with regards to indirectly helping you as a person in the workplace.
2On another note, I taught my school's "Choosing a Major" workshop seminar and definitely took the tips to heart. For instance, you barely ever actually have to be in a certain major for a specific field (e.g. English majors applying to Medical School), you just need certain prerequisites. I was taught that it is more important to major in something that you enjoy rather than something leading to a specific career path. Plus, many research universities don't have a pre-professional major anyways since they want their students to have a more holistic education rather than a vocational one.
3I graduated with degrees in Spanish, International Relations (latin american emphasis) and Anthropology with minors in Russian and Archaeology. I am now a database/website programmer! LOL! Totally different fields!
4I majored in Theology! And I work in mathematics publishing... nothing similar.
5I studied film and I work in television, though I can't say anything I learned in school has helped me with my current position.. still, the title couldn't hurt.
6I graduated with a degree in sociology and now work in marketing. Def applies.
On the other hand.. i never actually pick up my degree from my university.. and none of my employers have actually asked for proof of graduation.. have anyone elses?
7Cents4dollars, haha, my office actually asked me for a photocopy of my diploma. I thought that was a little strange, but maybe it's protocol for some places?
8Cents4dollars, there is a website that companies use to verify graduation, degree, enrollment, etc. http://www.studentclearinghouse.org/
9How do you get a job that has nothing to do with what you studied? I'm not through college yet so this is interesting to me.
10I just graduated with degrees in finance and in Latin American studies. I found a job in banking which goes hand in hand with finance. Sadly, I couldn't find anything that had to do with my LAS degree while I was looking. One of my goals is to one day combine the two in my work.
11I majored in film production and I work in film production offices. It looks nice on my resume, but I can honestly say that I've used nothing I learned from my major in the field.
12wow, I have not finished college and my only goal in life to get into medical school. I'm studying pre-engineering and pre-med/ and I hate math and physics. I wish my parents would pay for whatever I wanted to study and I would just study languages and premed. Life sucks when your focused to study calculus and physics.
13I'm a proofreader/editor for a marketing company and my bachelor's degree is in English. But I essentially was hired because my friend from grad school (in English Ed) was a proofreader there already. So, I think that connections and chance sometimes trump your major.
14lol
15I majored in art, with a concentration in film production. I then went to grad school for film production. Now I work as...a communication specialist (I tinker with web services and content to make sure the internets work right for a huge non-profit). There are times when my multimedia skills come in handy, but most of my satisfaction comes from knowing that I'm earning more and making better connections than I was when I was working as a PA and a local film instructor for a much smaller, artsier non-profit. I take comfort in knowing that I should be able to make my own films at some point in the next seven years.
16Business Admin - it's kinda hard finding a job that doesn't relate!
17i have a degree in education (middle school with an emphasis in language arts and mathematics), and one in theatre (general studies with an emphasis in costuming).
since graduating i've been a web developer and a project manager. does that relate? not too directly, but i can certainly spin both of them. one of my major strengths is being able to communicate technical concepts to non-technical folks. it's what (would have) made me a good math teacher. the costume design is how i blended my right-brain creative side and my left-brained analytical side. web design is sooo totally the same thing on both the front end that consumers see as well as the backend where all the code lives.
18I majored in Music Education and have worked as a public school instrumental music teacher ever since.
I also maintain professional memberships, including a position of several editorial boards for trade publications and a place on a research board. I write, publish, and teach college courses to preservice teachers. I am an active performing violinist as well. My entire working life, as a matter of fact, has been directly related to my degree.
So yep, I use my little piece of paper as it was intended (plus the Master's that followed). I was worried when I graduated that my choice of preprofessional major would be limiting, but it's worked out fine!
That all being said, my hubby's elementary ed degree has NOTHING to do with his current job in IT - but that's worked out fine, too!
19I have a theatre degree and I work as a nanny...every great once in awhile I wish I had gotten a more practical degree, but I've had employers who have said the fact that I have a bachelor's lets them know that I can learn what I need to for a job. I love my degree and I loved getting it, so it's all good in the end.
20I have a degree in English, and work in Publishing.
21still in sch, will just have to wait and see. i hope i do end up using it though, or else it would all just be a waste of time!
22Of course!
23I have a BA and MA in English Literature and work in book publishing, though not in editorial, so not exactly!
24French degree, working as a computer support specialist.
25I majored in Communications (Radio/TV/Film) and now I do web work for a newspaper. I guess you could spin it and say media is media, but my career for the last 8+ years came mostly from a $10 HTML book that I bought in 1994. The degree only served to get me the initial interview.
26Yes, I've done nothing but work as a designer so my degree has definitely paid off!
27I majored in English and then I have my MSIMC. I worked in marketing for 3 years and then I was laid off. I have been looking to break back in but within the last two years it's been hard. I have been an EA and now I am a coordinator that writes applications for new schools for different state licensing for a corporation.
28Political Science
29Nope not really!!
30Nope not really!!
31I have a marketing degree and I work as a counselor at an alternative high school. Could not be using my degree any less if I tried...
32Out of college, I went into education, which put my business degree on the shelf for a while. But now I'm actually doing exactly what I went to college for.
33I was going to graduate with my BS in computer engineering, but then I realized there were five classes between me and a BS in electrical engineering... so I am still in school.
34Hey this was a great question, I love reading the responses!
I majored in Philosophy, and I've been accepted at law school for the fall (with a scholarship) and I currently work as an assistant in a law firm (that wanted me to have a degree and loved the Phil. major). Sooo I'm thinking of applying to grad school in computer science, which would require me taking about 40 units of classes as pre-reqs, or becoming a police officer in the LAPD, and working up to Detective level and eventually applying to the FBI, and getting a master's in national security.
I seriously need career counseling right now...does anyone have any advice on these jobs? Is there a better way to get career counseling than googling everything? And would anyone want to take a job (like in the LAPD) that basically just requires a high school diploma when they received a degree from a pretty prestigious university?
Gah...I'm going crazy, but I'm trying to avoid going to law school in the fall..I think it'll be a mistake!
35Majored in Transportation and Logistics at Ohio State's business school, and now work as a Transportation Analyst, so- Yes
36I just graduated with a print journalism B.A. and I am still looking for a job, period!
37suprisingly, yes my degree has been put to use. i have a marketing degree, and i had to take lots of advertising types of classes...and i work in media (advertising) so it's all related
38That's funny savvy....because I was just thinking the other day that I can't believe I graduated 9 years ago! To answer the question.....I have a BS in Psychology and I am a flight attendant so no I don't officially use it
39I think it all depends on what you major in. I majored in marketing and minored in Poli Sci. By the time I got the degree, I was so sick of marketing I wanted to scream, and I was insanely involved in politics. So I went on to get a Master's Degree in Political Management and ended up focusing on....(drum roll for effect) political marketing. (9 weeks til I'm done with that one!!) And I work as a online communications consultant for non-profit organizations and political campaigns. I use my marketing skills on a daily basis. So, I may not explicitly be a "marketer," but my degree has been exponentially useful!
40I majored in Journalism and now I work in Human Resources and I LOVE it! I wish I would have majored in Business Administration instead of Journalism...you live, you learn!
41I majored in Government and Psychology and am now in Law school with hopes of becoming a Prosecutor.
42i majored in sociology & worked in healthcare as an assistant at an HMO. now i'm in nursing school, which is a degree that i will DEFINITELY use after i graduate.
43i just graduated may 10 with a b.a. majoring in religious studies. i am immediately going back to school this fall to take all the science, etc., i need to become a nutritionist. i just finished my degree because it is a better school than the state school in my town.
44I think it all depends on whether or not you go to school to be say a teacher, lawyer, or nurse or if you major in philosophy or theater.
